India makes Huge defense spending cuts

The artillery deals will go through. Artillery is the Achilles heel of the army and everyone knows it.

As for what could be cut, I cannot think of any major deal that isn't important in its own way.

Perhaps now the DRDO F INSAS rifle will be chosen over foreign ones, as will other Indian designed systems, since they wont cost hard currency.

Massive economic reforms have been rammed through by congress so hopefully the economy picks up soon. After all, the economy is still growing.

What will happen to Rafale deal that itself is around 15K-20k crore. Will that too be cancelled silently like LUH deal....

Defence Deals Likely to be hit
1)New Artillary Purchases
2)Procurement of 197 Light Utility Helicopters
3)Buying of 16 Muiltirole Helicopters for the Navy
4)Development of Future Infantry Compat Vehicles
5)Review od all Military Modernisation Programmes

This shows that teenage boy was on shopping spree with credit card but he miss his first Payment .
Our economy is not that much strong to bear this kind of purchase this is crazy .On other hand china can afford the modernisation of their big reserve of dollars we do have big reserve but in Swiss Bank

Don't worry about Rafael we are getting Rafael aroung 2050 when they are absolute.

no its bad analogy......

Its more like an earning wife was planning to buy ration for the month gets robbed by her own drunkard husband for money. Here GoI is the drunkard husband which looted country for last 8 yrs and India is the wife .Now when GoI finds the treasury empty its doing all this sort of nonsense like raising price on petrol/ cooking gas etc taxing janata more and cutting the home budget except that it will not cut down on its drinking (looting) budget.

Comprehension fail... no increase in taxes

It's Rafale not Rafael, around not aroung, Obsolete not absolute... Multi Fail!

The guy said it is a 20,000 crore cut, plus a possible additional 11,000 crore in cuts.

How much is that? A "crore" is 10 million right?

You're counting in units.

20,000 crores INR means $3.6 billion

31,000 crores INR means $5.7 billion

But then the news isn't finalised yet so we can only speculate on the
figures, and the real budget is never revealed completely. So its difficult
to estimate next year's spending in the February 2013 budget session.

Rafale deal is worth more than 100,000 crores. But what many fail to realise is that all ~ 20 billions are
not spent at one point, there're spread over a no. of years, over a no. of different budgets.

Deals likley to be affected are those where cheaper alternatives are available.

It's good for India; Army will now be forced to opt for indigenous products;
HAL - LUH instead of eurocopter
probably revival for IJT with new vigor
OFB 155mm bofor guns
L&T 155mm Self propelled arty
Rustom H and Rustom MALE instead of IAI UAV's

Antony asks military to prioritize purchases

NEW DELHI: Even as the defence ministry set a new mark in capital spending by October, defence minister A K Antony asked the military top brass to prioritise their purchases so that they don't run out of money for essential acquisitions towards end of the financial year.

Antony's suggestions came during a review of the military budget he had with newly inducted junior defence minister Jitendra Singh, defence secretary, the vice-chiefs of the three services, secretaries of defence production and finance among others.

According to a senior official, the defence ministry has spent Rs 26,500 crore out of the Rs 66,000 crore that is available for capital purchases. In the budget figures placed before Parliament earlier this year, the total capital outlay for defence was Rs 79,578.63 crore, so it is not clear why the defence ministry assessment is based on Rs 66,000 crore.

According to the estimates made for Wednesday's meeting, the ministry has already spent 40% of the capital budget by October. During the same period last year, 38% spending was achieved, sources said. "The booked expenditure this year is better than last year," he said.

In light of the fact that during the last two quarters, there is a rush in finalising capital purchases, Antony asked the three services to prioritise their purchases.

Sources said the minister also asked officials to slot separate review of infrastructure projects, especially those in Arunachal Pradesh. He suggested a special review of the indigenous aircraft carrier being built in Kochi, as well as of some other programmes.

"Towards the end of the financial year, there is always a rush. The minister doesn't want the forces to run short of money for essential buys," a source said.
