Though initially expensive, I now see that long standing railway culture is naturally leading to metro rail. Gr8 also that the new Modi govt. is a BRT champion re: successful Gujarat and other BRT's. Hoepfully they'll overcome reisidual BRT oppostition and get on with the BRT biz. Indore BRT

Suburban Rail-Metro Rail-Monorail-BRT-CNG/Hybrid/Electric Buses- Trams-Minibuses-Microbuses-Taxi-Autorickshaw-Pedal Rickshaw, Escalators and hopefully Travelators with decent footpaths and pedestrian walkways are turning Indian mega-cities into :rose: something else. 1 or 2 more things :
  • Climate control, or monsoon rain and hot weather control with realtively well established cloud seeding tech. And 24 hr. public transport, Never mind air-conditioned rickshaws :) !

L&T to bid for bullet train project
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is gearing up to bid for the government’s ambitious bullet train project, its Executive Chairman A. M. Naik, said on Friday. “We will certainly participate in the bidding of the bullet train project. We are already in talks with global bullet train manufacturers and technology suppliers for tie-ups. We will be much ahead than others when the project comes for bidding. We will target that project,” Mr. Naik told shareholders at the company’s 69 annual general meeting (AGM) here. He was responding to a shareholder’s query.

He said that L&T had emerged as the lowest price bidder for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s Statue of Unity project in Gujarat though the contract was yet to be awarded. The company is also expecting bigger opportunities from infrastructure projects, including metro rail.

“We have also won two major prestigious contracts in the Middle East, for Riyadh and Doha Metro projects during financial year 2014, contributing significantly to the order inflow growth during the year. We are participating in bidding for further such prospects in the region,” he added. He said the thrust on strengthening the rail network held good prospects for the company’s railways business. “We have already secured an initial order of Rs.7,000 crore in consortium with a Japanese company for a major section of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, and are bidding for more packages and we are expecting total orders of Rs.20,000 crore. We are also exploring international markets, especially the Gulf countries,” Mr. Naik added. On the outlook he said despite continuing slowdown, macro environment had shown early signs of recovery. With the dawn of a stable government the economy would improve gradually during this year.

Now that is a cool pic- 2 metros, 1 city!

What other freeways are under construction in Mumbai mate?

^^^
All kinds baby ... Re: Hyderabad below; I agree 100 %. Most under-rated Metro in India.
Hyderabad future can't be anything but Dubai, x 25. For similar reasons, Vizag should take off.

Freeways, no, expressway, yes. The 10-lane Sion-Panvel expressway (an expansion/improvement project) is one that comes to mind. Bombay city's western coastline is in dire need of a massive freeway; the authorities are busy toying with the idea of either building a coastal road on reclaimed land (replete with coastal promenades, parks, and wooded areas), or a series of bridges connecting the southern tip of the island to the north-western suburbs and other major nodes en route. I hope they go with option #2.

That's Cuffe Parade, not Colaba

I was thinking ... why no CNG- electric Hybrids. India has the right ambient climate for the stuff.
Novel tech.? Not really, needs only nominal, re-engineering/rejigging from established diesel-hybrid tech, some torque issues are insignificant.
