In global popularity contest, U.S. and China vie for first
AUGUST 23, 2017
Gone are the days when America’s standing in the world was contrasted primarily with that of the Soviet Union. Instead, the United States and China now compete to be the more favored world power.

The U.S. and China engender roughly the same level of goodwill. China is particularly well-liked in Latin America and the Middle East, while the U.S. fares better in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

However, America’s weakening image in many nations has taken a toll on the country’s once-solid lead over China. And China’s own favorability has strengthened in recent years in Canada, Australia, Lebanon and Turkey.

Since the most recent year Pew Research Center polled in 36 nations – 2014, 2015 or 2016, depending on the country – the number of nations in which the U.S. holds a competitive advantage in favorability over China has halved, from 25 to 12. (Differences of less than 6 percentage points are considered ties.) Whereas the U.S. once had a 12-point lead over China in terms of a global median, that lead has shrunk in 2017 to 2 points.

In six nations – Spain, Mexico, Turkey, Australia, Peru and Senegal – the dynamic between the two superpowers has flipped, with China overtaking the U.S. in favorability.

And the United States’ once-significant lead over China in popularity has fallen to a virtual tie in another seven countries: Kenya, Germany, France, Brazil, Sweden, the UK and Canada.

Meanwhile, in 12 nations, people view America more favorably than they do China: Vietnam, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Ghana, Japan, South Africa, Colombia and India.

A quarter-century after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia is viewed far less favorably than either the U.S. or China in most of the world, though America’s recent steep decline in image has improved Russia’s standing compared with that of the U.S.

America’s edge over Russia has contracted by more than 20 percentage points in 15 out of the 33 nations for which Pew Research Center has trend data on favorability toward Russia. These include Spain, France, Chile, Brazil, Italy, Australia and Tanzania.

The narrowing of the U.S.-Russia favorability gap is most striking in Mexico, where the 42-point advantage held by the U.S. over Russia in 2015 is all but gone. Mexicans now view the U.S. and Russia roughly the same.

I wonder if this trend has something to do with the increasing Chinese diaspora across the globe. Additionally, cultural solidarity between nations, such as that between Canada and the United States, and historical military alliances are far more relevant than popularity polls conducted of their respective citizens.

We also have to consider how many of these countries have direct contact with China's growing sphere of influence since many of the aforementioned nations with growing Chinese support merely reap the economic benefits. On the other hand, countries that have their interests threatened by similar Chinese expansion, especially those near China, are much less favorable of China than overseas nations.

China is liked by most nations around the world, some people believe that a country is not liked by the west means they are not liked by the world, this notion is utterly stupid.

Your not going to be a global power and please everyone. At the end of the day neither country really cares about public opinion polls.

That's true, we don't really care. but some retards keep saying that we are hated by everyone.

That's true, at the end of the day, global opinions are fickle and ever-changing.

We should wait and see how much more damage a single man (Donald Trump) can do though. He has yet to declare his first war, though it's getting pretty close.

Meh, China is nowhere close to having anywhere near the (cultural) soft power the US has.

Don't get me wrong though, let's be clear.

China have done unbelievably well for themselves, true, and in some areas are near peers to the US.

The US is hated all around the world for their many wars all around the world, also true.

but none of this takes away from the fact that the US is all about freedom, democracy and personal liberties while China is an authoritarian communist-capitalist hybrid regime. China is just not very appealing to the people of the world in that sense.. well maybe if you grew up in a saudi style society (much worse in terms of authoritarianism, dogma and freedom to use your brain)

I grew up in Hong Kong pre-handover, while under British Administration. I went to an International School, and took an international ciriculum. Hong Kong by the way is ranked as the freest Economy in the world for a decade in a row.

Now ask me which one I prefer, Donald Trump Neo-Nazis or Xi Jinping's Economic Dream? :P

Man, I won't even take a VACATION to the USA, I wouldn't even set foot on US soil in case I step into some Neo Nazi vs Black gang war, let alone anything else to do with that country. Canada is fine though.

As a side note, how many Indians have been killed in hate crimes in the USA, and how many Indians have been killed in hate crimes in China? So I guess you would know what I am talking about more than me.

Quick Question:
Do you choose your own leaders or does CCP chose them for you to be elected "democratically" from the choices provided?
The freedom you mention is more like choosing a bride in an arranged marriage from a list of those pre selected by your parents vs. love marriage. Of course its a matter of perspective and preference, not saying one is better than the other.
BUT the freedom democracies value is the latter.
Now if the CCP is choosing your leaders, how easy would it be for them to control the narrative as well?
How free can the press be if the socio-political landscape is so well manicured by the rulers in Beijing? and in turn how easy would it be to channel the populations thought process through the media?

Again, this is not a criticism or a needle at the situation in HK. HK truly is a fantastic city that I love and enjoy whenever I'm there. But you cannot make the argument that HK is truly free and independent until the above changes.

I look forward to hearing your opinion on this. I could be wrong, so feel free to correct me.

I've been to HK, great place. My cousin works there, loves it too.

May Xi Jinping's economic dreams all come to fruition and may your people live long and prosper but the nazi thing is just nonsense, you know it too.

Overall, as a set of ideas, the American 'freeduhm' concept will still far outsell your evolved/hybrid communocapitalist/callitwhatyouwill system of governance in a free marketplace of human ideas and aspiration.
