IAF orders another 750 Akash surface-to-air missiles

i think this is the first missile developed by DRDO to go mass production

found it funny at first and thought it was the INdian media again upto its tricks..But looked it up and yes, its is supposed to be nuclear capable.. Prior instance of Nuclear SAMs seem to date back to 1950's even

Why would a country throw Nuclear SAM within its own territory, just 30 KM away from some very high valuable target? Idea of keeping a nuclear tipped SAM is crazy and impractical. Airborne targets could be destroyed just by simple kinetic force and thats why AAGuns and Stingers can still get the bird down even if they do not have any detonating head at all. For target of such a fragility, use of Nuclear Weapons? Muaf rakho Yar!

Its nuclear CAPABLE, that doesn't mean they're going to mount nukes on to all of them, just that they can if they have to. Now I'm not sure why they would ever resort to anything like that, hopefully some of the more knowledgeable members can explain.

Akash missile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A nuclear warhead could potentially give the missile the capability to destroy both aircraft and warheads from ballistic missiles. The missile is described as being able to strike several targets simultaneously, which could mean either separate, independently targetable warheads, or a sufficient blast to destroy a number of them.Along with India, a limited number of other countries including the US, Russia, Japan, Israel, and some EU countries have developed operational multitarget-handling surface-to-air missile systems.

Also Consider this one:

This provided the Akash with the cross-country mobility to advance deep into enemy territory along with Indian Army strike corps, shooting down enemy fighters at ranges as far out as 25 kilometres

Hope it may clear you doubts

True...they might make some Akash as nuclear Tip and as Akash battery can move with army strike group into enemy teritory then they can use that nuclear tipped one in there only .... ;)

if a sam system is nuclear tipped and fired against any fast moving target and if somehow the target manage to escape the explosion even after that target will be distroyed due to electro magnetic pulse generated by explosion

bingo

its range is slightly on lower side ...dont you think...???

True.. The earlier nuclear tipped(very small tactical nuke) SAMs of US were one of attempts against Nuclear ICBMs in the cold war era as a tactic to improve probability of intercepting/destroying the incoming ICBMs from USSR.

On a lighter note, didnt we all see Independence Day ? It didnt manage to destroy the mothership though...? :)

It's intended to be a MRSAM and not a LRSAM. India is developing a multi layer SAM and ABM system. In the longer range, we have the S-300 and are developing the Barak-2. In the medium range, we have the AKASH and some other Russian systems. In the shorter range category, we have the Israeli Spyder QRSAMS.

congrats drdo.
Army should learn and develop more faith, like IAF.
MADE IN INDIA ROCKS !

The Nuke tipped is a silly

The Akash missile uses an Integral Ram Rocket (IRR) solid propulsion system, which gives it a very high-speed intercept range of 30km. The missile has an all-up weight of 720kg and a length of nearly 6m.The digital on-board command and guidance unit coupled with a highly responsive actuator system, makes the missile highly maneuverable upto 15g loads and a tail chase capability for end game engagement. A digital proximity fuze is coupled with a 55kg pre-fragmented warhead, while the safety arming and detonation mechanism enables a controlled detonation sequence. A self-destruct device is also integrated.
