IAF bases to digitize their upkeep as Maintenance Command turns 57

New Delhi. Digital technology and connectivity are the keys to the success of any war or military campaign today and tomorrow. Naturally, the the Indian Air Force (IAF) is undertaking an e-maintenance project, expected to cost Rs 2,000-2,500 crore over the next 10 years. The project will span across 170 base stations, 550 squadrons and 70,000 users, and is aimed at increasing fleet availability to the optimum.

The project, yet to be named, also aims to connect critical aspects such as guided weapon systems, air defence radars, safety equipment, communication systems, ground support equipment, armaments and mechanical transport.

This is step two after the Air Force Network (Afnet) has been developed at a cost of Rs 1,077 crore in collaboration with Cisco Systems, HCL Infosystems and Bharat Sanchar Nigam.

Significantly, the new technology connectivity would replace the IAF’s traditional, half-a-century-old telecom network.

The projects promise to achieve operational efficiencies for IAF both in terms of improved functioning and cost savings. And of course it is making hay while the sun shines for the bourgeoning defence private sector.

And all this means a giant leap for the Maintenance Command of the IAF which celebrates its 57th Raising Day this year.

The Maintenance Command looks after the maintenance, repair & overhaul, product support, storage & issue of spares for all variants of aircraft, airborne equipment and support equipment of IAF. This function is performed through various Base Repair Depots , Equipment Depots and Air Stores Parks.
