How Bangladeshis see India

and to a large extent, we paid for the political f*ck ups of our "leaders".....

not to mention, we also got a good taste of indian treachery, which is why we are now better prepared for it as well

By 'leaders', you do mean your jarnails, right? The very jarnails thought it unfit to be governed by a dark-skinned bengali.

Generals as well as well as West Pakistani civilians considered themselves to be too macho to bow their heads to a Bengali PM. So much for Ummah.

Off topic, but is Jarnail a real word? Or is it just General pronounced weirdly?

Jarnail is a desi spin-off of General.

lol Ummah is joke anyways.

Pakistani love for Muslims doesn't include Muslims of their own country.

The author is very quick to point out how India tried to "strangle" and create "droughts" in Bangladesh, but very clearly avoids all those events which created resentment among Indians towards Bangladesh.

Whether it was anti-Hindu pogroms in Bangladesh in 1992 or Bangladesh's decades long policy of harboring and supporting anti-India insurgents in the north-east or be it Awami League's blatant anti-India rhetoric, Bangladesh has played its share in souring the relationship.

Hopefully, in future, the relationship will turn for the better.

well, you are mistaken... They didn't trust Bangalis because they used to think Hindus are enemies and bangalis are polluted with Hindu culture....

and again, Agartala conspiracy case was real, and pakistani generals always knew Mujib has linkage with India.

Then why the Bengalis made a big fuss about the language issue and should have readily accepted Urdu, discarded sarees & dhotis for salwar kameezes (for both men & women) and tried to become more West Pakistani than West Pakistanis themselves and avoided the 1971 split.

As far as Mujeeb is concerned he was elected by Bengalis themselves and not aliens from outerspace.

You can’t destroy people’s culture.

Bengalis always had this for generations

It was to encourage Urdu over Bengali which backfired.

Bengali language may seem alien to us but it’s the way of life for them.

Also some jarnails didn’t trust to have Bengali regiments units employed in mainland Pakistan because of the fear they cannot be trusted and would act against Pakistan with India.

So result many Bengali units were left on east P to defend and guard that part of the thing.

They felt neglected and words of “uprising” began to spread in the circles

Obviously it was easy take over by Indian forces in east p when linked all together.

Peace

The main sticking point was West Pakistan's refusal to give the PM post to a Bengali. When a group of Punjabi and Pathan macho men begin to impose their ridiculous idea and culture upon a proud , ethnic group like Bengalis with hundred times more intelligence , capability and formidable cultural achievements to boast off ...then it becomes a question of self-respect.

She is daughter of Daily star infamous editor Mahfuz Anam. What better can be expected from her. She may write in Guardian but NO WAY she represent Bangladeshi view on india. Besides, she spent most of her life outside Bangladesh to know about Bangladeshi people, their sufferings and view. If she try to sell her opinion as Bangladeshi view that is gross misrepresentation.
Isn't it irony that her grand father Abul Mansur Ahmed was linked with Khilafat movement in SA....

you got it right... Bangalis are a proud group and very sensitive.... For example After 1965 war a west pakistani officer made a comment - today east pakistanis proved their patriotism is as equal as west pakistanis... Meaning east pakistanis had to prove their love for motherland while west pakistanis were proven patriots...

Total BS the 1st president of Pakistan was Bengali

And it wasn’t all Punjabis ; at the time most army high command was dominated by pukhtoons and political stage set by the ppp party of “Sindhi” Bhutto .

Their own self greed was to blame for the mess.

And sheikh mujib wasn’t an angel either I dread to think what he would have done if he had gotten control of pak considering his brutal rule in Bangladesh till 75.

Bengali are a proud people sure, but they also have many flaws like hasina and khaleda…….

Peace
