There is no place for God in theories on the creation of the Universe, Professor Stephen Hawking has said.

He had previously argued belief in a creator was not incompatible with science but in a new book, he concludes the Big Bang was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.

The Grand Design, part serialised in the Times, says there is no need to invoke God to set the Universe going.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something," he concluded.

'Planetary conditions'

In his new book, an extract of which appears in the Times, Britain's most famous physicist sets out to contest Sir Isaac Newton's belief that the universe must have been designed by God as it could not have sprung out of chaos.

Citing the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting a star other than our Sun, he said: "That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions - the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass - far less remarkable, and far less compelling as evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings."

He adds: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing.

"Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist.

"It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going."

The book was co-written by US physicist Leonard Mlodinow and is published on 9 September.

In his 1988 bestseller, A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking appeared to accept the role of God in the creation of the Universe.

"If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we should know the mind of God," he said.

'A brief history of time' was a good work but i think Mr Hawkings is losing his mind now...

Science provides logical answers to many questions with empirical/mathematical proofs. The belief in supernatural that guides human destiny is figment of human imagination. God did not create humans but humans created concept of God.

I give challenge to Professor Stephen Hawking that proof a single line or phrase in the Holy Quran is wrong (Informatically or scientifically).
If he proofs then i will agree with him.................if not then he must know that Allah (God) exists.....

May be you should first show your PhD on Islam from an accredited university. There are many people with little knowledge making big claims.

Should it not be the other round that you prove that God exists.

Science is all about proof, if you cant prove it then it does not exist.

Alas! humans believe they know everything ... people hundreds of years before us thought the same . the problem with west is they know deep inside that GOD ALMIGHTY exists but they won't acknowledge it because then the big question will be .. . what religion ? and also use of religion can be abused as has happened in the hundreds of years of human history....

if you have 90 mins then, do take a look, it can answer almost all of your question, What, when, How..

There is enough evidence, one just needs to look around...

U r in the UK, you might have seen a good programme on I think Channel 4 about the religion y'day.

Sorry not a big fan of TV. But i am a fan of reading and using the "grey matter" i have been gifted with. What i find amusing is many people who oppose Creationism are so quick and harsh to judge "religion".

There is a very apt saying about intellect: The intellect is a cold thing and a merely intellectual idea will never stimulate thought in the same manner that a spiritual idea does.
