Five female Afghan guards working in the airport in southern Kandahar were killed by unknown gunmen as they were on their way to work, security officials said on Saturday, the latest in a string of attacks against women in Afghanistan.

From bomb attacks to targeted or honor killings or domestic abuses, Afghan women have borne the brunt of the 15 years of conflicts during the Taliban-led insurgency as security has deteriorated and violence has increased in most parts of the country.

Samim Khpulwak, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, said the five women were in charge of searching female travelers at the Kandahar airport, and had been hired by a private security company.

"Two gunmen on motorbike followed their van and opened fire on them, killing the five and their driver this morning, said Samim.

No group has claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack but the Taliban insurgents waging an insurgency to topple the foreign-backed government of President Ashraf Ghani oppose women working outside their homes.

Although Afghan women had made hard-fought rights gains in education and work since the collapse of austere Taliban regime in 2001, there are growing fears that these could reverse with the deterioration of security and increase in violence.

Despite years of pressure by women's groups and foreign donors, Afghanistan remains one of the most difficult places to be a woman.

Restoring fundamental women's rights was one of the main objectives of the international community in Afghanistan, where the hardline Taliban Islamist banned girls from school and women from work in their rule from 1996-2001.

It's against Afghan laws to justify murders of 5 brave women in Kandahar. This is a provincial council member.

Wow, a country on the demise. If the Americans with all their might couldn't bring peace to this land one can imagine the dire prospects.

Sad news. RIP.. U.S.A need to go hard against Taliban, U.S.A should announce curfew in Afghanistan and need search operation from door to door and other possible hideout of Taliban.

Definitely Taliban involved..........Sure Afghanistan has always been conservative and women working in Airports is frowned upon, but murdering them for that is some thing else......For example Job of air hostess is also considered not appropriate by Pashtun society of Pakistan but no one goes to Peshawar airport with intention of murdering air hostesses there

Exactly ...No one goes and murder them..But sorry your comparison is not fair..In KP people don't resort to violence on such things. While in Afghanistan we have different scenarios. Each city and area has its own Warlords and don other then taliban..Putting everything on them will not solve it.A society where still warlords are honored on released from Jail is no way comparable to KP..Old people getting raped by VP ..Analogy is not correct..I am not refuting Taliban involvement but will not blame them blindly also.Anyhow they refuse the allegations and deny there involvement..Taliban usually own the attacks .While a provincial council member simultaneously justifying it.

There are rogue elements within Taliban, younger ones who take the things to extreme and are far more fanatical then their older generation ......such elements within Taliban are the ones who are joining Daesh

As per my knowledge majority in Daesh are ex-ttp with some deflected from Tliban , Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Chechen and some others. Taliban does take some soft approach after they were outside from Kabul. To me the involvement of other group seems more possible. Remember it was ISIS or Daesh that started hazaras killing while Talib disown it..ISIS is much hardcore and extreme in there ideology then Talibs..

No,the us needs to go
as long as americans are in afghanistan, our western areas will always be facing problems of terrorism

Who's doing this and why? Why aren't Islamic scholars and Islamist Groups going to war against such people? Not acceptable at all, our women have to be protected under all circumstances.

Find the culprits and publicly execute them.

The US and these mafia terrorist gangs need to go.

If U.S.A goes, then it will create big problems for us, taliban will rise again and it will bring uncertainty in the region.

Who do you think is attacking these women in the first place?

There are variations of Islamists, that's the reality my friend. The Islamists where I come from, are moderate, not in a quest for an Islamic state, or trying to regulate peoples personal lives. For them, Islam is more about God, than trying to play God as terrorist mafia gangs try to do so.

It's a vague term, but these gangs clearly distinguish themselves from mainstream Islamists, who are rational people.

Sadly my friend, not every so called "Islamists" are as enlightened as you're mentioning.Even IS tries to justify their action as "Task of Islam".And sadly,in Afghanistan, the other "Islamists" enjoy support from a section of society.
