Gravitational waves announcement: Scientists confirm detection of ripples in spacetime

No we won't collide. Big bang theory by definition says that Everything in this universe happened because of a big bang. So let's say immediately after the bang the distances between the galaxies (more like clouds of gases at that time) were few thousand kilometers. But because of the bang we're apparently living in an ever expanding universe. Think of it like a shock wave propagating after a bang and because of this expansion the distances between the galaxies now are billions of light years. Shock wave on earth doesn't keep propagating for infinity because of resistance obviously (atmosphere, earth, buildings etc etc). But remember Newton's first law which says 'The object will remain in motion or at rest unless it encounters external force.' And obviously all of this expansion of our universe is taking place in space so there's no external force (resistance) acting on it and hence, the universe will keep expanding.
fair enough, thanks mate:tup:

If u checked my thread:

Common misconceptions about atronomy

I wrote there that Bing Bang is not a fact but theory still. Same goes about Dark energy, Dark matter and even black holes. But its best theory we have now. All other theories are much more complex and have more problems.

As for Special and General Relativistic theories, they were proven in uncounted experiments and calculations and so far not a single experiment showed its wrong. We clearly see time slowed with speed and gravity (and this is used in GPS), we clearly see light bending because of gravity. We count orbits of planets with it (for example Mercury). More over we proved that gravitation wave exists before that, but we just did not register them.

please stop beating around the bush... you insisted on "expansion of universe" but i posted articles of those physicists who rejected it... it would be balance if you apologize to me.

Its not about mocking you Jamahir.

i am sorry but i must insist on this... injustice has been done and must be recognized... i will close the issue but i ask you read this. :)

below is a selection of the more mocking/arrogant posts directed towards me earlier about "big bang" and "expansion of universe" despite me later posting two articles that essentially reject those theories... read away their mocking :
Seriously man.. I can understand the socialist bullshit.. That a viewpoint and almost like a belief.. But this..

It's just plain stupidity and lack of education. You don't know what dark energy is or the big bang or anything other than elementary Physics and then you ask dumb questions.. You need years of schooling to get that buddy. Maybe not drop out next time around???
Worst of all the audacity and arrogance to go ahead and state his disbelief.. As if anyone gives an iota of f***k..
Welcome to neo-religion combined with ignorance.
U were dropped because u lack basic understanding in physics.

You dont understand basic principles of General and Special relativistic theory, you dont understand basics of universe expanding yet you criticize it.
And there's lot of time left for that to occur, you could still go to college and finish your degree before that happens.
Leave him be. He is pretty much the only jackass you can find who likes Kim Jong Un and "socialist" policies.
This guy will beat you down with his ignorance till you give up. He doesn't understand the difference between theory, fact and truth. There is really no point trying to convince him on anything in this field.

None of us here, are scientists, most of us are dilettante and we can only depend on the news provided to us as proof.

then why the arrogance by them?? why play god?? all because of a college degree which was gained by writing in school/college exams that there are nine planets around the sol sun, a theory which is now discarded?? why did they not deem to search for theories which reject "big bang" and "oh, the universe is expanding, oh"?? :)

filth !! anti-intellect !!

these are not scientists or supporters of scientists but zombies, and yes, with herd mentality.

edit : we need to discard the concept of the professional, phd'ed scientist and go back to the citizen scientist who existed prior in the centuries past down to people like michael faraday... a easy example in the modern world is elon musk, achieving lot more than what the "scientists" in many government space agencies have achieved.

i close this issue here.

What you never tell any of your friends they are being stupid and ignorant? ever?

you are banned but i must say this.

you must be a psycho to use those words with those you call friends.

if your friends are wrong ( i am talking about your situation ) you should be gentle and intellectual in explaining to them, taking time, and not attack them like a dog.

but i don't suppose your friends are gentle thinkers. :)

You reject everything that doesn't fit your little warped bubble out of hand and then argue your point from the most illogical way (like the planet comparison). You are really no better than the mullahs and sanghis that you despise.

obviously, intellectual debate is not your forte.

So ok , we have gravitational waves , then what ?

let's see in a year after all this excitement has died down... maybe it will turn out to be a false alarm and prove that no such thing exists, or maybe i will stand wrong. :)

First, let me tell you about the school/college degree. It is absolutely not necessary at all, if you have the resources at your home. 15-20% of google employee doesn't have a school college degree, and they are actively employed in research. And there are many achievers, who did home schooling rather than a standardized school. I believe the prevalent school/college grading system discourages free thinking and innovation, but one has to find a way out of it.

Now, coming back to the 9 planet theory, astronomers has recently acquired the ability to look beyond Pluto, and the celestial bodies beyond Pluto doesn't emit infrared radiation, so observing them is immensely hard. So they project radio waves towards the target zone, and wait for the reflected radio waves to figure out the material density of the region.

Now, if there's a massive object in the orbit, it will sufficiently clear out the asteroid debris in it's path, and it will give out a void or reduced material concentration in it's orbit. But planets beyond Pluto has a very highly elliptical orbit, so that makes detecting it very hard. There might even be 20-30 planets beyond Pluto, but there isn't any conclusive evidence to prove it.

This is the main reason of demoting Pluto from the status of the Planet, as there are other celestial object of the size of Pluto, who failed to clear out the debris completely out of its orbit.

these are not scientists or supporters of scientists but zombies.

i close this issue here.

True, scientists are more or less like zombies, looking for experimentally verifiable data collected from a repeatable experiment or observation. And any outlandish claim requires outlandish proof to support it.

Pakistani-born astrophysicist Dr Nergis Mavalvala was among the team of eagled-eyed scientists who, for the first time, observed ripples in the fabric of spacetime called gravitational waves.

The detection – announced only on Thursday – confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window onto the cosmos.

Scientists glimpse Einstein’s gravitational waves

Professor Mavalvala worked with researchers at the US-based underground detectors Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) Laboratory to build sophisticated sensors to detect gravitational ripples created from the collision of two black holes some 1.3 billion years ago and had been hurtling through space to reach Earth on September 14, 2015.

Dr Mavalvala, 47, was born to a Parsi family in Karachi where she did her primary schooling.

She attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary before going to the US as a teenager where she graduated with a BA in physics and astronomy from the Wellesley College in 1990.

During her graduation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) she started working on gravitational waves – which would lead her to one of the biggest discoveries of the century. But the tale was not so simple.

“I started graduate school working in cosmic microwave background, which is another area of astrophysics,” she told the Kavli Foundation in 2010 after receiving the coveted McArthur Fellowship.

“The group I was working in was moving to another university, and so I was kind of shopping around and bumped into Rai Weiss.”

Weiss and Robert Forward had in the early 1970s proposed designs based on which LIGO was formed.

Since meeting Weiss in 1991, Dr Mavalvala went deeper into research on gravitational waves. By the time she received her PhD in 1997, she was already working on building LIGO.

She focused on instrument development for LIGO during her post-doctoral work at California Institute of Technology (CalTech) before joining LIGO as a staff scientist in 2000. She also joined MIT’s physics department as an assistant professor in 2002, rising to become the department’s associate head in February 2015.

Pakistan-born environmentalist could become Oslo mayor

In essence, her work on gravitational waves has spanned for over 20 years leading up to the discovery.

“The big picture mission drives you. When you work in the lab, [it’s like] you bang your head against the wall for weeks at a time, working on a state-of-the-art circuit, for example,” Mavalvala told MIT’s site in 2014. “Yet this is what enables scientific discovery, when the smaller to bigger pieces of experiments succeed, when the whole thing does what it is supposed to, and then you hope nature gives you the event you’ve been waiting for.”

how about ceres in the asteroid belt, much before pluto??

please stop beating around the bush... you insisted on "expansion of universe" but i posted articles of those physicists who rejected it... it would be balance if you apologize to me.
Expansion of universe is undoubted fact. You posted articles rejecting Lamda CDM model of Universe.

then why the arrogance by them?? why play god??
Try to learn more about subjects u reject and criticize. Its embarrassing what u are writing here.

all because of a college degree which was gained by writing in school/college exams that there are nine planets around the sol sun, a theory which is now discarded??
LOL, nine planets is not a theory.

why did they not deem to search for theories which reject "big bang" and "oh, the universe is expanding, oh"?? :)

filth !! anti-intellect !!
There are many scientists searching for such theories. Soviet Union invested a lot in such researches, great minds with million times better understanding in physics than u, but could not find anything better.

how come people suddenly change from bright economist to political scientist to cosmologist in no time. do you folk really understand these concepts or just copy pasting things from other articles for the sake of show off? i don't believe that people other that cosmologist or the quantum guys will even understand basic concept like space and time, or may be i am the only dumb person left on planet earth

so there are nine "planets" around sol?? or are you now delving into grammar to score points??
9 planets is not a "theory" but simple observation. No one said that more planets could be discovered.

In 1990-es were discovered many little planets similar to Pluto. So then was a dilemma: count them as planets too or say that Pluto and this kind of objects are dwarf planets. People chose second. Its just issue of semantics.

How do you know all of that ? :o:

I thought you were just a baker in the IDF Light Croissant Regiment ? :undecided:

Just kidding, how have you been buddy ? :azn:

leave this thread, folks here are going mad over nothing. many of them are showing intellectual totalitarianism. you can't diagree----as you've rightly pointed out herd mentality-------if ihave read or experience nothing it means it does not even exist----
