Free trade zones: Tajikistan allows workforce hiring from Pakistan
By Imran Rana
Published: September 1, 2015

Tajikistan has allowed Pakistan’s investors, who set up textile manufacturing units in free trade zones of the Central Asian state, to hire 40% of workforce from their home country.

“There are five free trade zones in Tajikistan with lucrative incentives; Pakistani investors could import textile machinery without any taxes or duties,” said Maruf Jon Abdurahmonov, Consular Economic Section and Head of Visa Section at the Embassy of Tajikistan.

Speaking at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the envoy said the business community of Pakistan and Tajikistan should establish direct contacts in order to encourage trade and tap the potential between the two countries.

He pointed out that Tajikistan, where 93% of land constitutes hilly areas with population equal to that of Faisalabad, was a gateway to other Central Asian states.

Pakistani kinnow, garments, potato and mango juice are very popular in Tajikistan. Similarly, Tajikistan is rich in gas and electricity and will provide electricity to Pakistan through the Central Asia-South Asia (Casa-1,000) power supply programme.

The envoy recalled that during the Soviet era a big textile unit was set up in Tajikistan to cater to the huge demand from the Soviet Union. This unit has now become redundant, but new and small units are being established to meet the need of domestic market.

He asked businessmen and industrialists of Faisalabad, who had expertise in textile manufacturing, to come forward and establish textile units in Tajikistan.

Until 2007, according to the envoy, trade between Pakistan and Tajikistan was restricted to only $100 million, which is now growing satisfactorily with room for a quantum jump in future. Highlighting the liberal visa policy of Tajikistan, he announced that multiple business visas would be issued on the recommendation of the FCCI.

In reply to a question, he said Tajikistan had a renowned medical university where many Pakistanis were also enrolled. Still, he added, the Central Asian nation had an acute dearth of pharmaceutical manufacturing units.

“Earlier most of the medicines were imported from India, however, now 60% to 70% of medicines come from Pakistan.”

Tajikistan is holding many international exhibitions namely Interfood, Dushanbe International Health Care Exhibition, Info Com Expo and Tajik Build from October 14 to 16.

This is indeed a very good News,
This cooperation should only increase as time passes.

Textile and pharma are booming industries in Pakistan and will benefit both the countries

this is very very very BAD BAD NEWS!

we should try and keep the industries in PAKISTAN.

these industrialists should be kept in Pakistan. not sent abroad. they are an asset to our nation.

they contribute to taxes as well as EXPORTS!!

and where does the rest of 60% workforce come from?

the industries that are here didnt pack their bags and transfer their units there,
they just iterated their approach.
they will have their units here and will also generate revenue in Tajikistan.

Business go where there is environment...If Tajikistan can give an environment then our business should "expand there" ...

We can then safely say Noon chased them away thanks to their tax schemes and inability to generate power....Who would wanna do business where there is no power no gas no water and lots of tax going for god knows what reason? Tax are supposed to give you these facilities but in Pakistan you pay tax and still dont get any of these!

YOU ARE MISTAKEN due to electricity shortage and high taxes

MOST textile industrialists have moved to Bangladesh already ironically.

Ever heard about the thing foreign remittance ? how much we can earn thru it ?

PLEASE AND I DO MEAN PLEASE

EXPLAIN to me HOW WE EARN THROUGH FOREIGN REMITTANCE . I am sure you are unaware of the fact that PAKISTAN like most countries doesn't TAX REMITTANCE.

also please do let me know how is it better than corporate tax, income tax on factory owners and workers and export balance of trade.

idk about you guys but this is very great news..

1. pakistna industry won't go down, as Pakistanis still going to wear cloths:enjoy::enjoy:
2. It will increase our presence in CAsia, which w'd pave the way for future investors there from pakistan like (uk, usa etc)
3. if i were in govt i w'd force departments to open language school for people going there so slowly/gradually they can integrate there (in politics, business) etc
4. remittance will come to pakistan
5 man we are 180million people. its better if some pakistanis settle in these countries.. Kaziqistan has just 15 million peopel in such a large country.. so pakistan should help settling its citizen all over the world and reduce its own poppulaion..

GO Pak GO

Remittance money directly goes to the people of Pakistan not to any corrupt institute of Pakistan where these Govt officials make mess of it. It indirectly improves the economy especially if the work force will also be of Pakistanis. It will be a similar model to UAE and Saudia where there are thousands of small Pakistani businessmen and dwellers.

Central Asia is the way to go
There is both good and bad...Good is expansion bad is close up and decline in exports and increase in imports...No matter how you see it...We will end up importing textile from our own industries for our own people!

Fair enough but we will loose Made in Pakistan and now our people will be doing made in Tajikistan!

Bravo in raising our trades!

As for remittance going to the people, yes, if only we dont have to pay taxes on it! Yes there was a new tax introduced for money coming in ...Bravo greedy govt put a plug on that too!

And before any of you asks me for proof:

tell me why do companies generally invest in other countries?

tell me why do companies generally invest in other countries?
I am not against investments .....and it would be good..

However, what is happening in Pakistan which no one seems to voice out about is packing up and moving out of business like I said earlier:

Good is expansion bad is close up

What is happening and is a fact is close up in Pakistan not expansion into another country!
