What's new

First ships of P-15A Kolkata & P-28 Kamorta classes will be inducted into Indian Navy

still ppl are being happy at its induction??
its a sitting duck for next 3 years
Bhai saab, why always you think negatively?? I mean you are suggesting that we should Induct it after 3 years when LR-SAMs are ready but forgetting that you can utilise these 3 years by training your crews well for STOBAR carrier operations. Again it will have a total 4 destroyers and firgates with SAMs and a very powerful EW suite(can detect fighters 400KM away and can technically blind them if they are on their own in mid sea) so although with less air defence capabilities, but surely it won't be sitting duck.

@Capt.Popeye is it really possible to "induct" a ship without Barak-8s !!!

Yes indeed. And why not?
All the required installations for it can be set up, all the interfaces for it to sensors etc can be kept ready and the installation of the weapon can be done at a later date. The rest of the ship is functional, is'nt it?

Even a later retrofit (from scratch) can be done if required which will obviously cost more and result in the ship being out of service (during the refit) for longer.

There is nothing that cannot be re-done or un-done later; of course; if it makes technical and financial sense to do so. E.G. at a later date; the ship can even be cut open and the engines and even type of propulsion can be changed.

Of course in the present case; the preparatory wok can be done earlier while the final installation can take place later.

THis is not something new as the Type 45 destroyers were inducted before the AD component was installed. And Type 45 is a dedicated air defence destroyer above all.

Inducting the ship first and equipping it to it's max capacity later is done all over the world,
look at British Type-45 Daring-class DDG. The first ships did not even have their
Harpoons (main offensive armament) in place when they were inducted. The
missiles came later.

When P-15A is inducted it will have 16 x BrahMos (twice as many ASCMs as
Daring-class).

yes i am a bit negative as we are not making any visible progress just due to faulty govt planning.
had we privatised and not set up behemoths like bel and hal we would have been far better.
thats why i say that giving rafale contract to reliance will be better than hal albeit under certain conditions and govt watch

Wonder if they ll send INS Kolkata to escort Vikramaditya :rolleyes1:

Is INS Kolkata scheduled to be commissioned before Vikramaditya arrives?

Prolly not, just wishful thinking.

While I have you here, this photo of INS Kolkata was apparently taken by a British Modeller, from a cruise ship.

Apparently you can get a panaromic view of the Naval dockyard from the new cruise terminal in Mumbai. Is this a good idea? From security point of view?

He has got photos of a lot of Indian Navy ships. :undecided:

If this picture was from the Cruise Ship then you would have seen the other side of the Kolkata.
The other pictures are from the Cruise Ship. I have some similar pictures of Vikrant from both sides of the wall.

The pictures themselves do not mean so much. I have pictures of the American Atlantic Fleet in Norfol Va. for instance. Or some more exotic places. What can you really do with them?

Of course with Karwar coming on line, these opportunities for enthusiasts will reduce.

Fair enough, but if its not such a big deal they should let Indian fanboys to take photos too. Not everyone can afford a trip on a cruiseliner!
