End of an era, Mahendra Singh Dhoni announces retirement from international cricket

Great player and great sportsman! Sad to see an end to his career. But all good things have to end.

Some thoughts on Lt Col Dhoni:

POSITIVES

- Brilliant white ball player
- Best exponent of the stumping I can recall at international level
- Very average Test skipper, except for that match at Lord's all those years ago where he allowed Ishant Sharma to bounce England out with a ball that was over 80 overs old so I put that one match in the positive column

NEGATIVES

- Was captain of CSK when it was banned after a Supreme Court investigation into gambling and fixing.
- Refused to even talk about it
- Refused to step aside while the investigation was happening. Pure arrogance and reflects poorly on his character
- Walked out of a press conference in NZ when confronted about the Mudgal report. Why? What was he scared of?
- Owner of a player agency that represented Indian international players while he was Indian skipper so was clearly conflicted
- Ignored his selectors when skipper by not bowling players that he didn't agree should be in the team
- Thought promoting the military on his gloves was a good idea.
- Had Harsha Bogle sacked from the BCCI because he spoke critically of the Indian players.
- Total ambivalence to journalists in press conferences, bordering on rude. That rubbed off onto Kohli.
- VP of India Cements while BCCI President was also India Cements President and also owner of CSK. Massively conflicted ..... again.
- Randomly announces his retirement from international cricket on India's Independence Day like he was a chance to play at that level again [facepalm].

SUMMARY

Good player who demonstrated poor judgement when confronted with conflicts of interest. Unanswered questions over his his role in gambling and corrupt activities while at CSK given Mudgal report and secret envelope will taint him until he addresses them. Gilly better.

People seem to forget the controversy of his involvement in perhaps the most corrupt team in cricket history - the team had to be disbanded - never happened anywhere in the world.

This thread firstly is about Dohni - why are you polluting the thread by being off topic? Secondly the captain is fully responsible for his players actions. Dhoni knee of misdemeanours hence the reason the team was disbanded

He is on a Pakistani forum, telling us how to think and telling us we have an inferiority complexes to little men who can't fill big shoes next door.

I don't like Virat Kohli's outbursts and anger problems, I can have my opinions. I also feel like he legitimately hated Pakistani cricketers and went out of his way to antagonize them.

I don't know why they think we care about their opinions.

@Areesh @Pan-Islamic-Pakistan @PAKISTANFOREVER - reincarnation of mighty lion?
On topic - you are on a Pakistan forum and talking about hate frustration and inferiority complex? Coming from a guy that feels it necessary to launch a new ID is a bit rich - who was you in your previous life - come on show some balls and honesty - or will you remain an Indian mouse?

@Areesh is the detector who can find this guy, no matter what flag or what ID he comes in.

Ban this stupid sport already and spend that money on proper sports like football, basketball and rugby. It makes my blood boil when i see south asians talk about this sport as if it’s globally recognized. Literally nobody outside south asia gives a ****

Pakistan-born fan ‘Chacha Chicago’ says MSD has retired, so have I

MS Dhoni has arranged match tickets for Mohammad Bashir, also known as ‘Chacha Chicago’, since the 2011 World Cup

In Karachi-born Mohammad Bashir Bozai’s vow to give up watching India-Pakistan play at ICC events, obsessive fandom follows Mahendra Singh Dhoni into retirement, adding to things like jersey number and disciples such as Suresh Raina.

Travelling the world to watch the arch-rivals in action doesn’t make sense anymore to Bashir, aka ‘Chacha Chicago’, who endured abuses from Pakistani fans while cheering for Dhoni.

The well-known chacha, instead, plans to visit Ranchi to meet the man whose sphere of influence spreads far and wide.

“Dhoni has retired and so have I. I don’t see myself travelling for cricket again with him not being around. I loved him and he loved me back,” Bashir told PTI from Chicago, where he runs a restaurant.

“All great players have to call time one day but his retiring makes me sad and brings back a lot of precious memories. He deserved a grand send-off but again he is beyond that,” he added.

The unspoken bond between Bashir and Dhoni blossomed after the 2011 World Cup semifinal between the two countries.

For someone who survived three heart attacks and cris-crossed the globe to see Dhoni in flesh and blood, cricket will never be the same.
A ticket for the arguably the biggest game of the tournament in Mohali was a precious commodity but Dhoni arranged it for the 65-year-old, enough for him to “unconditionally love” the World Cup-winning captain for life.

For someone who survived three heart attacks and cris-crossed the globe to see Dhoni in flesh and blood, cricket will never be the same. Now that he is done attending live games, his next stop is Ranchi.

“I will go to his house in Ranchi when things get normal (post COVID-19 pandemic). That is the least I can do to wish him all the best for the future. I will also ask Ram Babu (another super fan, from Mohali, to come with me).

“I would have travelled to see him in the IPL but there are travel conditions and with my heart condition, it is not safe to do so,” said Bashir, whose wife hails from Hyderabad (India), a place he visited in January this year.

He says what makes his relationship special with the Dhoni is that they never interacted much during tournaments, most recently the 2019 World Cup in England, but the Indian legend was always there to help him before he could ask.

“On some occasions, I did get some time with him, but in 2019, we could not interact much. But like always, he arranged a ticket for me.

“And during the Asia Cup in 2018, he took me to his room and gave me his jersey. That was really special just like the two times when he gave me his bat.

“When he did not have the time reach me, he sent a member of the support staff with the tickets. He did not have to do that but he did,” said an emotional Bashir.

But which is his most cherished memory as a lifelong Dhoni fan?

“This particular incident during the 2015 World Cup I can never forget. I was there for a game in Sydney and was sitting in the sun, it was extremely hot.

“Suresh Raina came from nowhere and gave me sunglasses. He said ‘it is from Dhoni bhai not me’. I smiled back at him.”

Such was his loyalty to Dhoni that Bashir would openly cheer for India and for that, he, at times, had to endure abuses from Pakistani fans.

“This one time in Birmingham, the Pakistani fans hurled choicest of abuses at me and even called me a ‘Gaddar’ (traitor). I had to ignore all of it. I love both countries and humanity comes first anyway,” he signed off.

If Chacha agha knew he is RSS, he would change his mind.

It’s like please don’t read anything else -
Just the small piece of Good news. Indians specialise in burying bad news. His team got thrown of the IPL - the whole team was seemed to be corrupt yet they want to brandish him as a hero?
