I have been reading about the passenger rail service in India. It's fascinating stuff, with its rich traditions and long history. These three facts really blew me away:

1) The Indian Railways (IR) is the world's largest railway system under single management and the largest employer in the world with approximately 1.3 million employees.

2) The Indian Railways operates Asia's oldest railway system. India's first train steamed off from Mumbai to Thane on April 16th, 1853 covering a distance of 34 kms. That's 160 years ago, which is right around the time when the American Civil War ended.

3) Daily ridership average surpasses 21 million passengers!

Disclaimer

A few sensitive Indian memebers complained to me that I'm posting 'dirty' pictures of Indian Railway facilities. For the record, I make no judgement on whether these facilities are clean or dirty, for cleanliness is subjective and varies from culture to culture. Moreover, the accusation that I deliberately posted unflattering photos is complete nonsense.

Here are the steps I took to find these photos:

1. Look up top Indian cities by population on Wikipedia.
2. Look up the names of the train stations for the cities.
3. Enter the names of the train stations into Flickr.com to find a list of photographs by relevance.
4. Link these photos to the forum.

You may follow these steps and see for yourself if I had indeed maliciously posted unflattering photos of the Indian Railways.

Some photos of the Shatabdi Express trains, which uses the WAP-5 locomotive.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station (formerly known as the Victoria Terminus)

It was designed by Frederick William Stevens with influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Mughal buildings. The station was built in 1887 in the Bori Bunder area of Bombay to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
