  • Activists of National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports run covering their faces as police hurl tear gas shells to disperse the committee’s protest procession near Dhaka’s Paribagh. The incident took place yesterday when the activists protesting the establishment of a coal power plant in Sundarbans tried to topple the a police barricade
Police used teargas shells and allegedly charged batons on activists, protesting against the construction of coal-fired power plant in Rampal, near Banglamotor intersection in Dhaka.

The confrontation with law enforcers took place around 12:30pm as protesters tried to get past a police barricade in Banglamotor. The activists had brought out a rally from Press Club around 11am in a bid to take the protest to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

“Police hurled teargas canisters and charged truncheons on us as we tried to move past the police barricade in Banglamotor and march towards the PMO,” said Sabuj Shahidul Islam, member of Jatiya committee and Revolutionary Democratic Party.

He said 49 people were injured in the Banglamotor confrontation and 24 have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

At least six protesters were taken into police custody, added Sabuj.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge Abu Bakar Siddique of Shahbagh police station confirmed that they have detained some activists. He, however, did not give any specifics on the detainees.

Meanwhile, Socialist Party of Bangladesh (SPB) General Secretary Khalequzzaman in a statement condemned the police attack on the peaceful procession of the Committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports.

No protest against the Russian Nuclear plant? A meltdown would wipe us all out....or don't the commies care about that :(

Well, the protests are not against the power plant rather the location of the power plant, why on earth it has to be near the Sundarbans?

Banshkhali te arekta korte chailo...okhaneo problem.

I've been in country for a few years now. I've seen how much people 'care' about the environment.

Ajke dekhlaam ekjon boltese...amar biddyut dorkaar nai. How sweet, fb te copy/paste choltese. Bidduyt laagbena, ishmart phone ki emni emni cholbe

I actually don't give a toss about the plant. Think the govt should do away with it now, not worth the hassle...but, I find this 'I care about the environment' bullshit funny.

Huh? The Rooppur Power plant is being built by the Russians and they've provided close to $12bil in loans for it.

Yes bro Russia is helping . But the power plant is damageable for the country. PPl will protest. If police shoot them. Then where democracy exist ?

Bashkhali te mainly sthaniyora chhilo...

There will always be some who try to go with the trend with all their personal bullshits...

But generally, people seem to be more aware about environmental concerns now...

The question should be whether we can afford to lose Sundarbans... At least, 1 million people are directly employed by the resources of Sundarbans while few more millions are indirectly involved. They have been into these professions for generations (perhaps centuries) and will continue to be unless the Sundarbans is affected by the environment...

The power plant is supposed to provide electricity to the SEZs to be constructed near Mongla and perhaps in Kushtia. Now, how many people will there be employed? And for how long?

There needs to be proper cost analysis for the viability of this power plant...

It's a modern Gen nuclear power station. Am sure they took care of that. Are you anti nuclear power?
Absolutely not.

I was pointing out with all the mismanagement we have in this country, you'd think a nuclear power plant would be something the 'environmentalists' would be up in arms over....yet, what do we have? Complete radio silence.

Okay nuclear power is environment friendly as long as waste disposal is done correctly and no accidents. Other than that. There was uproar after Japan's disaster and then Russians offered two reactors instead of old plan of four. This two are new Gen and guaranteed to be safe. And the building is said to be earthquake proof. Nine on ritcher scale.

After the Japanese accident, BD government decided to go for more modern reactor despite the increase in cost.

The site is too far away from the sea to be affected by any Tsunami like in Japan, and coupled with it's modern safety systems, it is highly unlikely any major accident will happen.

@Mohammed Khaled : I think as part of the agreement, the Russians will take care of waste disposal.

Currently Social Media is bursting with anger, it is full of Anti-Rampal project and save Shundarban forest.

by luck all the people protesting against it also anti-India. lol So its not about sundarban but Indiaphobia.
