"Most of the $45b investment is in the energy sector, but there is no project on the agenda for repairing the dwindling transmission lines," Former foreign minister Inamul Haq. PHOTO: AFP

ISLAMABAD: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a window of opportunity for Islamabad to boost its economy, noted speakers attending an international seminar on Tuesday.

A day-long seminar on the “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor: Economic, Political and Security Perspective” was organised by the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies and chaired by Pakistan Council of China Executive Director Dr Fazalur Rahman.

Terming the project an uplift package from the Chinese government to boost Pakistan’s economy, the executive director said, “China is much committed to launching this project and it is now up to the main stakeholders in Pakistan including the federation, provinces, civilians and military establishment to undertake sincere initiatives in order to make it a success.”

He acknowledged that confusion still persisted pertaining to the economic corridor and no one from the government had bothered to clear the air.

Former foreign minister Inamul Haq said the CPEC was a historic initiative and Pakistan needed to attract investors to invest along the long route of the corridor, which would create jobs and business opportunities for the locals.

“Most of the $45-billion investment announced under the CPEC is in the energy sector, but there is no major project on the agenda for repairing the dwindling transmission lines,” he pointed out, saying these lines were the main cause of power crisis as 25% of the total installed energy capacity was wasted.

Haq voiced concern over the security challenges associated with the project as the chief minister of Balochistan had sought Rs2 billion for raising a special force, comprising 1,100 personnel, to safeguard the Gwadar Safe City project.

“Those who are against Chinese investment are working at the behest of foreign elements and must rather work for attracting investment to Pakistan in the same quantum as China wants to make,” he stressed.

National Defence University Assistant Professor Humayun Khan said the CPEC was a comprehensive package of competitive economic initiatives from China and the energy projects initiated would kick-start an industrial boom in Pakistan.

Shahzada Zulfiqar, a researcher and journalist, said there were widespread reservations in Balochistan about the project. “Baloch people have always been deprived of their due rights. Now, since the project has been initiated, and there is a lack of skilled workers in Gwadar, the Baloch fear that outsiders will come and fill the gap, leading to demographic changes which could be damaging for them,” he added.

“The development of Gwadar Port will give a tough competition to Chabahar and Dubai ports,” said Dr Zafar Jaspal of the Quaid-e-Azam University.

the Foreign Minister has pointed out a rising issue,
the transmission lines are indeed very old and obsolete.
a lot of lost Energy can be saved if the transmission lines in Pakistan are repaired and upgraded.

This need to be done now. HOWEVER, this needs to be done parallel to increasing production capacity. Only changing the lines wont do surely.

That's one of the reasons why the UAE is pissed off with Pakistan! :azn:

I think the process of increased Electricity Production and improved Power Transmission lines should be done in tandem. By themselves alone, neither would alleviate the problem.

They will get over it sooner or later.

.

the point is that no one is giving importance to this Issue, being done parallel or isolated is another story.
its gonna save massive energy issues and will only help in curbing the energy crisis.

Yes you are right!!

Anyway, yes, Gwadar will have a significant effect on the shipping in gulf and that means a big loss for these arab gulf nations. One of the main reason they are also supporting disturbance in Baluchistan! Still, no worries, the situation is improving in Baluchistan and once the TTP scums are dealt with focus will be on Baluchistan. Also with the CPEC (ORIGINALLY PLANNED AND I HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY) to pass through Baluchistan it will bring the much needed infrastructure development and business opportunities in Baluchistan, thus improving the situation. Gwadar is here to stay and arabs will get used to it soon enough! :)

UAE supporting freedom fighters in Balochistan? :woot: So that adds to the alphabet soup of intel agencies operating there (according to Pakistan). CIA, MOSSAD, RAW, NDS (KHAD), NESA(UAE), MOIS(Iran) etc etc.....:cheesy:

Freedom fighters!
:)
Shall i say more?

Anyway, if you sometime feel you can actual talk about this in a positive manner let me know, till then, carry on with the childish self-pleasing sarcasm. For now, you can educate yourself and Google it. The reasons are plently and are all understandable to a sane mind.

This thing needs to happen fast. The powers that be won't allow Pakistan to become a transit route for China. The main goal is to cut off China from all it's land based energy routes. They will try their best to tear apart Pakistan. So the window of oppurtunity is very narrow, and I hope you guys manage to make it work.

The time to be proactive and see succesful implementation of Gwadar Port is NOW!!!!!!! Cant let more time be wasted! Infrastructure, human capital and fool proof security are key to development

No big deal. Let them.

The BLA/BRA exist but their operational capacity is weak. They lack the ability to cause any major incident. All they can do is murder unarmed people, such as what happened at Mastung.

Regardless of who supports them, including your side.

Mainstream Baloch are smarter than that which is why they are participating in national politics and not isolating themselves (the way a few twitter warriors would like you to believe)

Ok. But Gwadar port has been leased out to China for 40 years! So what's in it for you?

The bottom line is that the CPEC is for the Chinese, of the Chinese, by the Chinese. Pakistan is just a bit player in this project. Out of the $45 billion, $11 billion is a loan to Pakistan for road construction which it'll have to pay back to China in 15 years!

How much will the ordinary Pakistani be paying for electricity from coal fired plants being made by Chinese private companies who themselves would be borrowing from Chinese banks? Pakistani analysts themselves have calculated the tariff to be Rs 18 per unit to be paid to these companies! Wow!

Cost of transportation on the motorway from Lahore to Xinjiang? Calculated at Rs 4 Lakhs per 10 ton truck, it is going to be almost unviable for the type of low value goods that would be exported from Pakistan with profit margins close to zilch!!

The only redeeming feature would be the gas pipelines - probably.

Must be your vedic upbringing which has resulted in this utter retardation.

CPEC is causing infrastructure development. Road, rail, energy projects, business parks, airports = more commerce = more jobs. Its a kickstarter for Pakistan and at the same time helps out a neighbor to make their life easier.
