Clashes erupt in Kashmir following fire at Sufi shrine

standard indian trained response.....

yea the ISI has a knack for sending people to burn Muslim Sufi shrines.....you people really are delusional; even strong dose of prescription meds wouldnt save you

Why do these things happen just before Amarnath yatra. Something fishy

y do these things happen only in KASHMIR now that is something "fishy" as you call it!

If the local population feels so strongly about the role of Indian Hindu Parties, I hope the government of India investigates the matter to the satisfaction of Kashmiris.

Whilst one cannot rule out foul play it has to be seen that this was a 300 year old WOODEN structure and as per recent incidents one must assume fire safety standards were non-existent and this was really a diaster waiting to happen.

The only people who I can see gaining anything from carrying out such an attack are militants be it domestic or (more likely) groups from across the border as they would like to incite hatred and anger. The fact is this shrine was revered by Muslims and Hindus alike and stood for tolerance pretty much everything Islamic extremists hate and would like to attack.

The ridiculous assertation on pg1 that this is "another 26/11 on Muslims in India" well, it speaks for its self doesn't it. Who needs comedy central when you have these clowns spewing thier nonsense about like this.

it was set on fire by hindu extremists and terorrist.

Really? I am glad you didn't point out at the "evil joos" this time though..

BTW I was in Srinagar when this happened.... it was a case of short circuit where old electrical wires got fried and resulted in fire.

But yeah.. you're free to think whatever scares you..

What happened to the post about Kashmiri people attacking Separatist leader at the site of the burnt shrine? Why are those posts being deleted?

6 fire tenders were enough to douse fire: DG Fire Services

‘People damaged 20 vehicles, snatched equipment from firefighters; traffic movement made it difficult to control the situation’

Srinagar, June 26: The Director General of Fire and Emergency Services G A Bhat Tuesday said had people cooperated with the department, only six fire tenders would have doused the fire of revered Dastgeer sahib (RA) shrine at Khanyar.

He alleged that people damaged 20 fire tenders and snatched equipment from the fire fighters, thus hampering their efforts to extinguish fire and prevent losses.

“At 6:30 am we received a distress phone call that fire has engulfed Dastgeer Sahib (RA) shrine. We sent the fire tenders to the spot within four minutes and fire tenders from headquarters were also dispatched to the spot as well,” Bhat told Rising Kashmir.

He said, people, who had assembled near the shrine, manhandled the firefighters and took the control in their hands.

“The technological imbalance was created in pressure due to negligence of youth, who took fire fighting operations in their hands. After people started lobbing water through pipes, they didn’t attach nozzles with them, which resulted in water loss. Without attaching nozzles to the pipe, water loses its pressure and fails to reach to the target heights,” DG Fire Services said.

Blaming people for creating impediments for firefighters to perform their duties, he said, “People assembled there said “let the shrine burn” but we won’t allow you (firefighters) to use water of the Damb. Later, the same group took the fire tenders to the Damb for filling water”.

Bhat said had people cooperated with the firefighters, only six fire tenders were enough to control the fire in the shrine. “After the situation was out of our control, we gave a brigade call at 7:0 am. But, unfortunately, people didn’t allow us to control the situation,” he said.

He said they pressed 33 fire tenders into service and most of them had the capacity of around 12000 and 18000 liters having imported rear mounted pump (RMP) of 2270 capacity.

He alleged that people damaged 20 vehicles and injured 20 firefighters. “They also set ablaze one fire tender as well. They also snatched equipments from our men, who were manhandled and beaten”.

DG Fire Services said traffic movement in morning hours created chaos and confusion for them to control the situation. “Traffic men allowed traffic to ply to the area, which created impediments for firefighters to control the situation.”

He said since shrine was made of wood and repeatedly painted with highly inflammable paints, it took less time for the flames to engulf the whole shrine and cause extensive damage.

^^ so people snatch fire fighting equipment, hamper firefighting efforts and then criticise the fire dept for not dowsing the fire quickly enough?!! I love it!!

+ where we're the police to protect the firefighters and control the ignorant crowds?

The annoying thing is this is a common theme across India- whenever something bad happens authorities are obstructed by bystanders either getting in the way or trying to get involved. There are elected agencies charged to carry out specific actions bit it police, ambulance service or fire brigade but whenever there is a disaster every Tom dick and Harry thinks they'll have a go at playing one of these agencies or just stand around getting in the way watching what is happening. Of course some of these people think they are trying to help but in actuality they are stopping the experts and proffesionals from doing their jobs. Proper cordons, well away from the incident, need to be set up quickly by police and manned to stop anyone from encroaching on the scene to try and gwack/help.
