Chinese captain dead in fishing clash in South Korea

This is a revenge for their coast guard death in 2011, so I consider we repay that back. It's fair now.

How is that fair ? This isn't the first Chinese fisherman killed by Korean coast guard since 2011.

South Korea is a rogue state
South Korea just want to flex a little muscle to remind the big brother. I am okay with that because it is indeed difficult to maintain control over such massive fishery industry in the Yellow Sea.

Such a cruel act by the S.Korean, was shooting the captain in the stomach really necessary? RIP.

does south korea ever shoot their other big brother US?

I don't support illegal fishing ; and aggressive fishermen.
We remembered some Chinese fishermen use their ship to crush Vietnam fishboat and sink it with dozen of Vietnamese fishermen last May, intentionally. After sinking it, they sailed away without any attempt to survive the victims.

It's so barbaric mentality. They are criminal.

We are finding them to bring to court, but meet resistance from China authorities in attempt to protect them.

----------------
If they resisted the law enforcement in USA, for checking, they could be shot too.

The fact that, Chinese fishermen every single day tried to illegal fishing in Korea EEZ,
and ready to fight back hard to Korea coast guards, some lead to death of Korea officer right in Korea EEZ. It's not rare case.

If not using hard punishment, Korea coast guard has not enough power to control all of illegal aggressive fishermen. Last week NK also caught some Chinese fishermen and ask for big fine.

--------------
The right thing to do is teaching Chinese fishermen to follow the rule and law, by both Chinese and Korean authorities. If they violated that, China would not protect them by all price or worse back up them.

I heard that Chinese maritime surveillance ever pushed hard to Indonesia counterpart to save Chinese fishermen from keep when they illegal fishing in Indonesia EEZ.

SEOUL, South Korea — The captain of a Chinese fishing vessel was killed Friday following a fight with South Korean coast guard officers who stopped his ship for suspected illegal fishing activities, officials said.

A South Korean guardsman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun after he violently resisted inspections in the waters off South Korea’s western coast, said coast guard official Kim Hye-gyeong.

The 45-year-old Chinese national was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, according to officials at the Mokpo Hankook Hospital. The hospital did not immediately announce the exact cause of death.

The deadly fight occurred as a dozen South Korean coast guard officers boarded the Chinese ship for searches in South Korea’s exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles (370 km) from shore. When other Chinese fishing ships pulled nearby and sent their crew members aboard the ship being inspected, the Chinese captain began resisting more violently, which led to his shooting death, according to South Korean coast guard officer Cho Nam-yong.

It wasn’t immediately known whether there were other injuries.

Chinese fishing boats have been going farther afield to feed growing domestic demand for seafood as catches have decreased in waters close to China’s shores. South Korea’s coast seized about 220 Chinese ships last year for illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea.

In 2011, one South Korean coast guard officer was killed in a clash with Chinese fishermen in South Korean waters.

I wonder what will China do?

Why does China have to do anything in this case? Let the facts present themselves. IF the Chinese captain resisted violently, then we can't be surprised that the South Koreans defended themselves. China shouldn't be held hostage by every fishing boat captain that can't or chooses not to follow instructions from armed sailors in their own EEZ. If the facts are different than what's being presented in the news, China can demand compensation and an apology.

IMO, the most telling fact is that other Chinese fishing boats sent their crews on board the one being inspected. It's like a cop pulling you over for speeding and then 3 carloads of your friends show up and get out of their cars and start surrounding the cop. Nothing good will come out of that type of scenario.

No matter what happened, not everything that happens at sea needs to turn into an International pissing contest.

This is how properly Russian handled Chinese illegal fishing and resist the command of stop for seize.

How properly did Vietnam handle an unarmed Chinese oil rig supported by hundreds of coast guard vessels resisting Vietnamese demands to leave their territorial waters? Oh right, Vietnam did absolutely nothing. Cowardly little Vietnam, always has to live through the victories of other countries. :coffee:

South Korea must be punished!, what a barbaric act.

what kind of logic is that?

South Korea must be punished!, what a barbaric act.

RIP!
Absolutely!
An intrusion into S Korean's fishing territories even if proven does not deserve a death sentence.
S koreans are very barbaric at times.

what kind of logic is that?

He means Korea must hire the same quantity of Coast guard officers to quantity of Chinese illegal fishermen.
How ridiculous the logic !!!

Chinese fishermen no enemy of S.Korea

A Chinese fisherman was killed on Friday morning by a South Korean coast guard officer who opened fire with a pistol. According to the South Korean authorities, the Chinese fishing boat had crossed the border to fish in South Korean sea waters, and the tragedy took place when the fisherman "resisted" the coast guards' attempt to seize the boat.

Conflicts between Chinese fishermen and South Korean coast guard officers have been occurring for a long time. In 2012, a Chinese fisherman was killed by a rubber bullet fired by the South Korean coast guard. This time, it was a real bullet that killed the fisherman.

Even if the Chinese boat did cross the border as the South Korean side alleged, and the fisherman did "resist" the South Korean coast guard operation, should the officers have fired real bullets and killed him? Some people in South Korea may think that by doing this the law enforcers could look "awesome." But have they considered the feelings of the Chinese people?

Both sides must be extremely careful when firing up public sentiment against the other side.

China has never encouraged its people to fish on the South Korean side. On the contrary, the authorities have always tried to persuade the fishermen to abide by the law.

For some reason, the fishermen insist on trying their chances. The sea territory is different from that of the land, it is possible the fishermen's awareness of maritime rights and obligations is not as clear as that of the land border. However, if the South Korean authorities use force too harshly and promptly, they will have gone even further astray than the fishermen.

The Chinese government needs to further educate its fishermen to follow laws. But the South Korean coast guard should also be aware that the sea border between China and South Korea is not the same as the "38th Parallel" dividing the two Koreas. As long as the Chinese fishermen did not threaten the coast guard officers' lives, the officers should not have fired a real bullet into the fisherman's heart.

These fishermen are, at most, violators of economic laws, or might have resisted law enforcement to some degree. But the fishermen are not terrorists. They are people who make a living on the sea. They are not the enemy of South Korea.

The South Korean government should take Sino-Korean relations into account, investigate the incident and punish the officer according to the law, so as to give the Chinese people a convincing answer to the fisherman's death.

We hope this incident is only an unexpected accident, not a "standard response" for Chinese fishermen who might have crossed the border.

We also wish to see a reasonable and restrained South Korea instead of a country with rising nationalistic flames.

This "no enemy" even killed a Korean Coast Guard officer.
There's a code "office down" spread wide among law enforcement.
