China's proven shale gas reserves 764.3 billion cubic meters, ranking first in the world

Well if that is the case then if China buys oil and gas overseas because it is cheaper how come China isn't buying stuff from Africa/SouthAsia where as you say it would be cheaper...seems just as illogical...
Supply chain dumb dumb. If labour was the only reason, then people would've build stuff in India. It's about a robust supply chain, world class infrastructure, reliable power, it's the ecosystem. I am surprised you don't know this already.

China right now exploit shale gas as a "technological acquisition basis", so as to keep the drilling technology and to prevent it from falter away. I am against exploitation of Shale gas. The environmental harm is immense. Once you frack, the entire aquifer is destroy.

The water is no longer drinkable and it is toxic.

This could affect few hundreds of sqkm.

For US this may be ok for a while. The fracking zone of US is not dry and not lack of water. So no need ground water.

But for China this is not ok in many places, even if in SIchuan where rainfall is abundant. (long story)

Oil is cheap in the global market so for now China doesn't really have to explore her shale oil, they can be saved as strategic reserves for the country. China can easily become an energy independent country is she is willing , so the so called strangling China's energy supply by blocking some choke points of China's sea trade routes is just a haters fantacy.

Once you frack, the aquifer dries up or got toxic.

Recently one guy in China become a rock star by complaining his plantation have no access of water. The coal companies then pretend to give him water. In reality, once you mine coal, all water gone -- likely several hundreds of sqkm.

His plantation WILL die.

The water that was left got polluted and cant be used anymore.

This is big econlogical disaster.

CHONGQING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Fuling shale gas field in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has produced over 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas since it began commercial production, according to Sinopec, its developer and China's largest oil refiner.

Shale gas is an unconventional natural gas that is mainly composed of methane and exists in organic-rich mud shale and its interlayer. It is considered a clean new energy resource.

The Fuling gas field was initially constructed in December 2012 and entered commercial development in March 2014, becoming China's first large-scale shale gas field. It has proven reserves of 900 billion cubic meters and a daily shale gas output of about 23 million cubic meters.

The gas field currently brings green and clean energy to more than 70 cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt. ■
