Russia is by no means a strong nation, and doesn't have much future prospects. It is good militarily, it tries to overplay and overextend diplomatically, and is very important for its resources. But it has no cultural influence, no economic, no technological.

China is what its leaders want it to be. Today, it has huge economic and financial muscle. It has more soft power than Russia, yet soft power is no where near that possessed by America. It is growing technologically, but no where near right now. It is not a regional hegemon yet.
