The Philippines has accused China of “harassment” after a Chinese naval ship and dozens of other vessels surrounded a contested island in the South China Sea.

The coast guard on Saturday said 42 ships, believed to be part of China’s maritime militia, had been seen close to Thitu Island, also known as Pagasa, which is Philippine-administered territory in the widely contested Spratly archipelago.

A diplomatic dispute between Manila and Beijing over claims to the resource-rich South China Sea has intensified in recent weeks since the Philippines struck a deal with the US to allow its troops more access to local military bases.

On Monday, Commodore Jay Tarriela, a coast guard spokesman for the West Philippine Sea, said the vessels were still in the area, adding “this is a form of harassment”.

The Philippine authorities also released a rare video of a Chinese coast guard vessel sailing four nautical miles from Pagasa, accusing it of “loitering” within the island’s waters.

The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei lie at the heart of a growing standoff in the South China Sea, where China is militarising islands and reefs to bolster its vast territorial claims and the US Navy is carrying out patrols to promote freedom of movement.

To expand its claims, China has deployed its navy, coastguard and its so-called maritime militia - dubbed China’s “Little Blue Men”.

Last week, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the Philippine president, told the military its mission had changed to protect the Southeast Asian nation’s territorial boundaries.

Mr Marcos did not specifically mention China in a speech to troops based in central Cebu province, but his message was delivered just two weeks after summoning the Chinese envoy to protest the use of a military-grade laser by the Chinese coastguard against a Philippine patrol vessel.

“I’m saying that your mission in the AFP has changed,” Mr Marcos told the troops, referring to the Armed Forces of the Philippines. “For many, many years, we were able to maintain that peace and maintain that understanding with all of our neighbours. Now things have begun to change and we must adjust accordingly.”

I rather they start constructing a naval base at Huangyan island.

China red line is Philippines must not let US army based in any of these Islands. I suspect China receives intel that Philippines allow US army to deploy.

China will beat US pawns hard. Some samll countries never learnt a lesson from Ukraine.

Have you learned a lesson from Ukraine? The Ukrainians have punished Russia and turned the east into a Meat Grinder. So what makes you think the West will not arm these smaller nations to punish China & Co.? You know something is wrong when you must recruit and resort to male and female prisoners to fight a war. China will have the same issue as Russia, waiting 8+ years before launching a conflict and allowing the Ukranians to be battle-hardened; you guys need to talk and think less and more Pew-Pew.

China advocates shelving disputes and pursuing joint development. Try to solve the problem by peaceful means. But the Philippines wants to use force to solve the problem. China will not object.

China is 10+ times bigger than Russia in economy, population, manufacturing power, science and technology level. Compared to China, Russia is too corrupt and inefficient.

I always feel funny when some one says the West will sanction China? Who are the west? US, Canada, UK. Probably will take action. European countries? Unless they want to suicide.

Meanwhile China seems to have taken control of Sabina Shoal. It could be permanent now.

200 BC – Chinese fishermen have used the Spratly Island(SI).[1]
3rd century AD

220 AD –280 AD - Two famous Chinese books authored by Wan Zhen of the Eastern Wu State published during the Three Kingdoms, and a work titled Guangzhou Ji authored by Pei Yuan of the Jin Dynasties described the Paracel and Spratly Island (P&SI).[2]
Jin Dynasties exercised jurisdiction over the islands by sending patrolling naval boats to the surrounding sea areas.[3]
5th–13th centuries

420–479 AD Southern Dynasties Naval forces patrolled the P&SI.[4]
618 AD –907 AD Tang Dynasty the islands were placed under the administration and authority of the Qiongzhou Perfecture (now Hainan Province).[4]
970 AD –1279 AD – Chinese administration of the South China Sea continued into the North and South Song dynasties.[4]
Archaeologists have found Chinese made potteries porcelains and other historical relics from the Southern dynasties (420–589), the Sui dynasties (581–618), the Tang dynasty (618–907), the Song Dynasties (960–1279), the Yuan dynasties (1206–1368), the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and later eras up to modern times on the South China Sea islands.[4]

World War II

  • 1939 – Japan occupies the islands and takes control of the South China Sea. [24]
  • 1951 – San Francisco Peace Treaty:
The critics forget that in the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty between Japan and the Allied Powers, Article 2(f), states: “Japan renounces all right, title and claim to the Spratly Islands and to the Paracel Islands.” This renunciation of the two island groups, and of Taiwan itself, was confirmed in the U.S.-brokered 1952 peace treaty between Japan and the Taiwan-based Republic of China (ROC), then recognized by the United States and Japan as the sole legitimate government of China.

>>> China claim South China Sea legally, historically, geographically, and in reality.
Answer to What evidence does China offer to substantiate its claims of sovereignty in the South China Sea? by Michelle Zhou https://www.quora.com/What-evidence...share=f92030f3&srid=ul2ehS&target_type=answer

August 5, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 12th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Phnom Penh, during which he expounded on China's position and refuted the so-called “concerns” expressed by the United States.

Wang Yi said China's position and claims on the South China Sea are supported by solid historical and legal basis. China has never changed the basis nor the scope of its claims, let alone make excessive claims. China and ASEAN countries are committed to properly handling differences through bilateral consultation and negotiation in accordance with the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). Over the years, China and ASEAN countries have worked together to maintain the overall stability in the South China Sea, providing a stable development environment for their respective development and prosperity.

Wang Yi noted that at present, the biggest risk to peace and stability in the South China Sea is precisely the inappropriate intervention and frequent interference by major countries outside the region. For a long time, the United States had not raised any objection to China's claims of sovereignty and rights and interests in the South China Sea, and said that it did not take a position on the sovereignty issue of the islands and reefs in the South China Sea. Now, it has turned to a total negation of China's position and claims. This is untenable in logic, law and justice terms. Where is the credibility of a major country if it changes its established policies at will according to its own political needs? How can it win the trust of others in the future? In recent years, more and more US warships and aircraft have frequently appeared in the South China Sea and the airspace over it. China and the littoral states of the South China Sea cannot help but ask: what on earth is the United States up to? Non-regional countries should abide by their duties and earnestly respect the efforts made by countries in the region to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Wang Yi said, China and ASEAN countries are speeding up consultation on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea and will work together to upgrade the DOC and arrive at regional rules that are effective and have real  practical significance.

That's the sad part. It's been over a year, and they are still fighting in Ukraine. So while NATO supplies arms, it's the Ukrainians fighting. The Russian military was modeled to fight NATO, and they have utterly failed; to this day, they don't have air superiority. To make matters worse, they've run out of active reserve tanks and tapping into post-WWII stock for weaponry. When you have to scavenge like the Russians, the war has worsened. The joke in this conflict, Russia lost two ships, one of which was the flagship of the Black Sea, to a country with no navy.

China should take the island back, the island was stolen and invaded by the Philippines from Republic of China in the 1970s after the Chinese soldiers vacated the island during a typhoon temporiarily. The island is rightfully Chinese, its time to take back now since Philippines wants to be an US pawn to fight China in SCS and wants to station US Marines on the island.
