China is building some "fairly amazing submarines" and now has more diesel- and nuclear-powered vessels than the United States, a top U.S. Navy admiral told U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday, although he said their quality was inferior.

Vice Admiral Joseph Mulloy, deputy chief of naval operations for capabilities and resources, told the House Armed Services Committee's seapower subcommittee that China was also expanding the geographic areas of operation for its submarines, and their length of deployment.

For instance, China had carried out three deployments in the Indian Ocean, and had kept vessels out at sea for 95 days, Mulloy said.

"We know they are out experimenting and looking at operating and clearly want to be in this world of advanced submarines," Mulloy told the committee.

U.S. military officials in recent months have grown increasingly vocal about China's military buildup and launched a major push to ensure that U.S. military technology stays ahead of rapid advances by China and Russia.

Mulloy said the quality of China's submarines was lower than those built by the United States, but the size of its undersea fleet had now surpassed that of the U.S. fleet. A spokeswoman said the U.S. Navy had 71 commissioned U.S. submarines.

U.S. submarines are built by Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc. and General Dynamics Corp.

In its last annual report to Congress about China's military and security developments, the Pentagon said China had 77 principal surface combatant ships, more than 60 submarines, 55 large and medium amphibious ships, and about 85 missile-equipped small combatants.

Mulloy did not provide details about the number of surface ships now operated by China.

He said the U.S. military did not believe China carried nuclear missiles on its submarines, but that it had been producing missiles and testing them.

Well Pakistan is shot of funds other wise we should soon order 6 AIP submarines from China with 3 Augusta 9 submarines will make us really dangerous force and than wait for China to complete Type 95 submarine and hope by that time our economy also improves and than go for that Type 95

Another false information passed by the defence industry to get more fundings for necessary military equipment. As I recall the outnumbering was only in the South China Sea and making US Navy almost useless over the region.

"Fairly amazing submarines" yet "inferior quality". Talk about contradiction.

soon? months, years, decades?? how many naval bases does China have around the world o_O

surely we'll see 20 Chinese aircraft carriers, 60 destoryers and 200 submarines soon :bounce::china::bounce:
I doubt China has any desire to be world police like the fatty patties. Their ambitions are territorial and local. To that purpose they have little need of foreign naval bases or aircraft carriers.

Right...and yet they are sending ships around the world. They know they need foreign bases as they protect their interests. Especially with maintaining open sea lanes.

that is certainly the case currently
but as China becomes more powerful they will try to have a bigger influence in the world
and directly challenge US in the future.

certainly US didn't become a global power in a day , it took years and multiple wars for it to gain the influence it has now.

It's a bit funny and refreshing at the same time to see Chinese cheerleaders in action.

Btw, no developing country wants to have 'world's police' tag. If anyone remembers that's the reason behind American's reluctance to join 'The great war' and the 'European war'. Any world power is going to exhibit their power to intimidate rogue states and look after their interests.

Okay fine. US won't be 'world's police' and not meddle in any other country's affairs. Which other country will lead the strikes against ISIS? Spider man has always said 'with great power comes great responsibility' :D

Let me know in 30-40 years if Chinese still don't wish to be world's police.

And perhaps the most dangerous thing about the submarines is the fact that China now has an equivalent to the Harpoon Block II.

China will surely surpass US in naval sector soon.

Quality, not quantity. While bulk of Chinese underwater fleet is Diesel Electric, US are all silent SSN/SSBNs. The 1980s LA Class SSN is well ahead of anything Chinese or Russian today.

So China might surpass in numbers, but quality is a big issue....and it will take it's natural time for technology to evolve.

Few years from now, Mr. Mulloy will be on the board of General Dynamics or Huntington, or both...

True.

A well connected network around mainland with numbers to fill is the best available strategy.
