TARBELA - After the completion of the excavation, Tarbela 5th Extension Project has entered a new construction stage by completing the first bin of concrete pouring at the project’s tailwater box culverts.

“The project team meticulously organized constructions and continued improving technologies, fostering an enabling environment for the first bin of concrete pouring,” POWERCHINA said in a statement on Monday, adding that the completion of the concrete pouring of tailwater box culverts indicates the smooth transition of the project from excavation to the concrete pouring of the main body.

On May 6, 2021, POWERCHINA signed a contract for civil works of the 1410 MW Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project with the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). The project is scheduled to start electricity generation by July 2025 with an annual supply of 1.81-billion-unit low-cost and clean electricity to the National Grid.

The Generation capacity of the Tarbela Hydro Power Station will increase from 4888 MW to 6418 MW with the completion of the Tarbela 5th Extension Project, according to WAPDA official statement.
