.INDORE/BHOPAL: Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh chief Mohanrao Bhagwat kicked up a fresh ruckus saying marriage is a contract between a man and a woman, and lasts as long as woman honours it. He then said for marriage to work, wives must look after household chores.

"Marriage is successful only when wife looks after the household and husband takes care of the earning. This system ensures order in society," Bhagwat said at RSS's 'ekatrikaran' or gathering, late on Saturday. But, as if this wasn't patriarchal enough, out came another gem from 80-year-old Madhya Pradesh minister Babulal Gaur, who said it wasn't appropriate to describe marriage as a contract in India, where husbands for centuries have been revered as 'parmeshwar (god)' by wives.
Implicit in Gaur's criticism of Bhagwat was that a contract can take place only between equals and not between gods and mere mortals. All this coming within days of Bhagwat's remark that rapes take place in west-influenced urban India and not rural Bharat, the latest display of competitive chauvinism within the Sangh parivar is bound to leave even some BJP supporters cringing.

Bhagwat, who was in Indore for a day, said, "The husband and wife are contractually bound under which the husband wants the woman to look after his house in order to take care of her needs and safety. Till the time the wife follows the contract, the husband stays with her. If she violates the contract, he can walk out."

Speaking at another gathering on Sunday, Bhagwat said that the country was plagued by internal and external problems, and that "Hindutva offers solutions to the burning problems. Although everyone was aware of the problems, there was no collective effort to address them." A collective effort without departing from India's age-old tradition is the panacea for all the problems, he said.
Apart from senior BJP leaders Sumitra Mahajan and industries minister Kailash Vijayavargiya, almost a lakh of RSS volunteers and workers were present.

Meanwhile, Gaur explained further, "Traditionally in this country, a woman considered her husband god. That status may have changed in modern times but what is good in our society should be kept that way. A woman gets married to a man thinking it to be a life-long commitment. Marriages in India are considered a bond that goes beyond one life. We call it 'saat jannmo ka bandhan (an attachment for seven lives)."

1. There you are. The core problem seems to be politics. Much is happening in the social media - like Facebook,etc. India has a wide internet coverage. People are speaking out their minds, something one won't find in the media itself. People are saying as many as 3,000 cases of rapes, reported and registered with Police, remain un-actioned because all of them involve politicians, their sons/relatives or workers/supporters. Authorities / leaders of society somehow do not consider rapes of Harijans/Dalits big deals, as confirmed by Prof Sen.

2. Whereas the political leadership and the elite class is calling for reforms, the common man is calling for revolution. History of mankind tells us that the common man is rarely wrong. They want to throw away the colonial system of politics, bureaucracy / administration and judiciary. These as prevailing suite the politicians only and allow the old colonial masters to continue their exploitation.

3. This girl is turning out to be a saint whose death could cause an Indian Spring. Indians are calling for military take over. Some are even saying impose the Sharia of the pre-British occupation.

Dude do you heard RSS supremos statement about the rapes. It will boil your blood. Now as RSS controles BJP if RSS thinking so then you can imagine BJP 's stand. Some of BJP people lives in 18th century.

2) Women should not cross moral boundaries (aka follow Western culture, aka dresss in mini-skirts and revealing dresses)
3) Women have been through much worse in Ancient India, considering burning women alive in Sati is also supposed to be part of this glorious "Ancient Value System", then its beyond time we got rid of everything related to this system.

Sometimes people might not say i directly, but the implication they put is enough to tell you what they really mean to say. You have your vested political interests with this RSS guy perhaps, which is causing you to not see some pretty clear implications he made.

Nope..I dont agree with all the utterances or actions of RSS..for example their propping up of Gadkari and silent opposition to Modi..But I'm not going to oppose them just for the heck of it. Criticize them for what they said..not for what you think they said or in this case for what they did not say.

It's definitely a reason..though may not be the only reason...when you combine the blind aping of western tendencies with the complete lack of sexual freedom in conservative societies like India you get a potent combination that explodes into rape many times..

2) Women should not cross moral boundaries (aka follow Western culture, aka dress in mini-skirts and revealing dresses)

He never said women..he said vyakti..meaning person..meaning there were moral systems in ancient india which was followed by both men and women and which are getting degraded with blind aping of western culture.

3) Women have been through much worse in Ancient India, considering burning women alive in Sati is also supposed to be part of this glorious "Ancient Value System", then its beyond time we got rid of everything related to this system.

Sati as a practise was NEVER practised in ancient india..its origins lay with the onset of the islamic invasions in medieval india..when it was first started by the rajput women as a means of preserving their dignity from the islamic invaders. It was only by the late 15th 16th century that it became a forcible practise and even then it was not practised on a pan-india level.
