BERLIN — Germany warned Eastern European countries of serious consequences if they don’t drop their resistance to accepting more refugees, reflecting Berlin’s growing frustration at the unwillingness of its neighbors to help alleviate the crisis.

Speaking at a joint press conference Monday after agreeing to earmark an additional €6 billion to deal with the influx of asylum seekers, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel stressed that the rest of Europe, particularly countries in the east, needed to do more to stem the crisis instead of relying on countries like Germany, Austria and Sweden shoulder the burden.

“Eastern Europe enjoys the greatest economic advantage from open borders,” Gabriel said. “It is in Germany’s interest to maintain these open borders but everyone should be aware that if (the refugee burden) is concentrated on these three countries the debate will take another direction.”

Gabriel hinted that EU funding for countries could also be at risk if a solution to the refugee crisis wasn’t found soon. Merkel echoed his comments, adding: “What isn’t acceptable is that some maintain this situation has nothing to do with them.”

Berlin’s not-so-subtle threats of retribution suggest Germany is quickly losing patience with its European partners over their reluctance to play a bigger role in managing the crisis. While Germany estimates it will take in as many as 800,000 refugees this year, some countries in Eastern Europe have taken almost none and have rejected calls to do more.

As per its usual habit Germany tries to destroy Europe. We're watching them on their 3rd attempt in 100 years. As they say "If you won't let someone die,he won't let you live".

They're so guilty over Nazi atrocicties that they've gone completely to the other extreme.

Other EU countries must and will accept people in need. Sharing is caring.

Well Eastern Europe should not be asking for handouts from Germany and then not wanting to help out when Germany asks.

I don't see why countries like Hungary cannot agree to take in numbers like 100,000 each - this is only 1% of their total population and won't really radically alter the demographics.

Thats their problem if they want to bring more refugees. But should not impose them to others.

That's their business,we're not going to to bow.Our President held a press conference today,he totally rejects mandatory quotas,he said Romania could take a maximum 1785 but he doesn't see how we could integrate them and,in the end,we're not part of Schengen so nobody can impose anything on us.Basically Germany can piss off.

It is not just Nazi past - Germany did not get to dominate Europe without being smart.

They are also thinking of the future and these young immigrants will help drive their economy in the decades to come.

Yes they will. Not for humanitarian reasons, just because they're scared of frau Merkel.
Sykes–Picot Agreement and the destabilization of the middle-east started 100 years ago by France and the UK. These two countries should also take the biggest bulk of the refugees IMHO.

At least 200 of them will blow themselves up in a train station.

Lol at a Turk lecturing us about "destabilising" the Middle East.

That's another risk. Even if extremists are a "tiny minority", that's still enough. If 0.1 percent of 100 thousand want to wage jihad that's a hundred too many.

Well there are plenty of Christians refugees as well - if you don't like Muslims then take them.

I am perplexed as to why Eastern Europeans are so happy to immigrate to other countries but are so averse to even small amounts of immigration into their countries - it is a natural phenomenon that has happened since time began.

Actually we want to take in Christians but that's considered racist.Anyway,Eastern Euros are not storming borders, our countries made a lot of concessions for this to happen, our industries took a hit. Most of the EU funds go back in Western firms pockets wich siphon the money out.I can tell you lots of crazy stories like milk quotas,etc.....it's a long discussion.

I take no joy in the fact that this could be the end of the EU,Putin is laughing his a.. off but it surely looks like it.
