DHAKA:
Energy-starved Bangladesh on
Wednesday inaugurated the
opening phase of work for its first
ever nuclear power plant using
Russian technology.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid
the foundation stone of the Rooppur
nuclear power plant in the country’s
northwest, which will have two 1,000
megawatt reactors costing up to $4
billion.
The impoverished South Asian nation
signed a deal in November 2011 with
the Russian state-owned nuclear
giant Rosatom to build the power
station and has secured soft loans
from Moscow to finance 90 percent of
the project.
“In building the plant, we have
given utmost importance on the
safety issues,” Hasina said in a
televised speech after the
inauguration.
“We are strictly following the
International Atomic Energy Agency’s
guidelines in building the plant to
ensure 100-percent safety,” she said.
The premier said that Russia would
manage the nuclear waste by taking
it back.
The first phase of work will include
conducting feasibility and
environmental and safety studies
which would be completed over the
next two years, ASM Firoz, head of
the Bangladesh Atomic Energy
Commission, told AFP.
The plant is expected to generate
power by 2018 and help ease chronic
power shortages that have hit
industry hard.
It will also diversify the country’s
energy mix as Bangladesh has been
overwhelmingly reliant on its fast
dwindling gas reserves from the Bay
of Bengal to produce electricity for
its booming economy.
In 2007, Bangladesh received
approval from the International
Atomic Energy Agency, the industry’s
global watchdog, to set up a nuclear
power plant.
Many countries worldwide are
reconsidering their use of nuclear
power in the wake of Japan’s
ongoing struggle with its stricken
atomic plant in Fukushima which
was damaged in the 2011 earthquake
and tsunami disaster.
Germany decided to scrap its
nuclear power stations in favour of
renewables, while Japan has
switched off all its atomic reactors

1.We are far way off. BAL govt will never undertake a project which could upset its masters. These exercises of Hasina are targeted at the ensuing elections, and there is money to be made scooping off the Russian funding.

2. But the fact is that we need nuclear stations for power generation. We must,as a nation, also aim at acquiring nuclear arms.

I always see BAL as a 3rd class political party under lead of Hasina Begum.

We need nuclear power plant for ensuring our Rapid growth. But having Nuclear arms is very difficult for us sir (I think so).

Are Bangladesh disaster responses units and training is good enough to handle what ever Nuclear related accident maybe happened in the future (like Fukushima accident or Chernobyl)?

Possible, once we generate the required expertize in this field, it won't be a big deal and given our neutral foreign policy, there won't be any major sanctions as well. Moreover, we have some valid reasons to acquire nuclear weapons.

chances of a nuclear disaster in SA increased by 40% after this announcement

seems Bangladesh wants to become the next target of Israel and US after Iran, iraq and libya..

why so sir???Bangladesh is making its first nuclear reactor, not Nuclear Bomb..they don't have means for it,nor the need.

topic...

Congrats..hope India will extend helping hand to Bangladesh in this matter and cooperate.

Russians are going to stay here until our people are adequately trained.

Oh really ?? was iraq really making a nuclear bomb ?? what was the case with libya?? and what is the case with iran now?? no matter what they do, when it comes to muslim nation getting nuclear technology , US, Israel and NATO are on the same table to teach the lesson to that state and use the UN as weapon to put embargoes and sanctions on the country...

Don't you see that Russia is building the energy station.

In case of Iran Russians are involved too... there is another exmpl of iraq, in their programme French were involved.. Now you tell me what happened to iraq, and is happening with iran???

To counter the big fat bully we need nukes.Even Burma is working towards that. If there is a political will, and we maintain good relations with China and Pakistan, it should be difficult to own some nukes. In the interim we should come under the nuclear shield of China/Pakistan.

I wonder why Pakistan and Saudi Arabia(potential) didn't get the same treatment???you're missing one point.Iraq did have a nuclear weapons program, just like Libya and Iran(Pakistan sold the tech).how close were they to make it is a subject of debate, but its not right to assume that West is stopping only Musilm countries(North Korea)..they're stopping every rogue countries from having this tech.but peaceful nuclear program is always welcome.
