Sri Lanka is expected to pay back the $200 million it borrowed from Bangladesh by September, Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Sunday (05)

According to the Daily Star, Momen said that the loan obtained as a currency swap agreement in May 2021 is expected to be repaid by September as Sri Lanka’s economic situation is improving.

“Sri Lanka is gradually doing better. They are recovering slowly. We have given them until September [to repay the loan],” Momen told journalists yesterday at state guest house Padma on his return from Colombo.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen made the remarks returning after attending Sri Lanka’s 75th Independence Day celebrations as a guest.

Sri Lanka was supposed to repay the $200 million in March but the island nation sought more time. Subsequently, Bangladesh Bank gave Sri Lanka six more months.

“The new government there is running the country pretty well,” Momen added.

The Sri Lankan government is hopeful of recovering from its deep economic problem with support from the International Monetary Fund.

The two parties have recently reached a staff-level agreement on a 48-month $2.9 billion loan programme that will also help the beleaguered nation to secure short-term funds from other donors.

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has conveyed his country’s gratitude to the Bangladesh government and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the timely assistance as the country battles to rebuild its economy, Momen said. (NewsWire)

Dude, money isn't something you can play around with. What if you were supposed to repay a loan by december and you needed this money to faciliatate that payment?

Financial discipline is a must.

There are many ways to leverage credit without whinging in public - trade concessions for example.

Anyway, I do not think anyone in Dhaka really cares about getting back the money from SL until it gets back on its two feet. BD has already found the faultline in borrowing foreign money and doing infrastructure construction without a limit. SL's bad example is helping BD to rely more on self-help.

We must remain a benevolent nation by not insisting on getting repaid by SL when it is limping..

They might default on this payment because the forex reserves are still very very low
