The members of Bangladesh National Cricket Team also joined the Shahbagh intersection where thousands of youths are demonstrating for sixth consecutive day on Sunday demanding capital punishment of all war criminals.

The team reached the venue nicknamed 'Projonmo Chottor' around 1:30pm.

Earlier, around 11:00am all the team members of Duronto Rajshahi led by its owner Mushfiqur Rahman Mohan reached Shahbagh intersection.

People from all walks of life specially youths and students started the demonstration on February 5, hours after Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah was given life imprisonment in a war crimes case.

Bangladesh's top cricketers and officials, led by the captain Mushfiqur Rahim and board president Nazmul Hassan, visited the scene of a high-profile protest movement in central Dhaka on Sunday following public calls for their participation. Others who were present at the show of solidarity included Mashrafe Mortaza and Mohammad Ashraful.

The protesters are demanding severe punishment for war criminals who had collaborated with Pakistani forces during the war for independence in 1971. An International Crimes Tribunal had been set up in 2010 to try these collaborators, many of whom are politicians.

On February 5, the Tribunal sentenced Abdul Quader Mollah, a convicted war criminal, to life imprisonment in two of the five cases filed against him. Hours after the judgment, five people took to Shahbagh, an intersection near Dhaka University, to demand stricter punishment to those who had been charged (directly and indirectly) with sedition, murder, rape and overall collaboration during the war in 1971. Since then it has attracted tremendous response from the rest of the country as more than a million people have joined the protests in six days.

After a grand rally on Friday attended by nearly a million people, there were calls for the cricketers' participation in the protest. After a discussion with the BCB, the players decided to come under the official banner of the national cricket team in solidarity with the protesters. The team walked in from the eastern side of the Shahbagh intersection, now known as the Projonmo Chottor, and were led towards a truck from where many of the protesters - mainly students, bloggers, professionals and members of the general public - voice their opinion and demands.

Mushfiqur, Mashrafe, Ashraful, Nasir Hossain, Abdur Razzak and former captain Habibul Bashar got up on the truck along with the board president and several BCB members. Others like former captain Akram Khan, former cricketer Jahangir Shah Badshah and current players Nazmul Hossain, Elias Sunny, Mominul Haque and Sohag Gazi soaked in the atmosphere. Some were seen walking around the square, and speaking to people and even gave autographs to school and college students. None of the players officially spoke and remained at the protest scene for around 20 minutes, before walking back towards the bus, accompanied by thousands of people.

Later Hassan, the BCB chief, said that the team had decided to visit to lend "solidarity" to the protests.

"Their presence here is very exciting," said Miraj, a college student who has been coming to Shahbagh for the past few days. "To see our national heroes here would mean a lot. I know they are not politically involved, so it is more inspiring to see them here."

Although some of the ministers and political leaders have visited the protests and there have been similar demonstrations all over Bangladesh and around the world among expatriate Bangladeshis, the visit of the cricket team has been the most high-profile yet.

It will be interesting to see what Idune has to say about this especially since yesterday he said the following.

Hammer-fist using some unsubstentiated blog information

1) lied about Bangladesh national cricket team, which never went to Shabag
2) Twisted the title of thread with utterly false information.
3) Defamed Bangladesh ntional cricket team as a political entity.
4) put Bangladesh national cricket team in danger by associating (with this false information based thread) them with fascist demand and activity.

Those who like to see name and credibility of our national cricket team is not hijacked for political purpose with false news, please, report this lie and falsified thread to MOD

Anyway most normal people know that the vast majority of Bangladeshis do want justice against the perpetrators of some horrific crimes. I do not personally care if Kader Molla is executed or not as I believe in Allah and know that he will get justice regardless of what happens. The wider issue is the Jamati threat to our country.

- Pakistan has lost 50,000 lives in a war against religious extremists.

- Algeria lost 100,000 lives.

Jamatis could not get to that level as they are very insignificant so there is no question of a Pakistan-style situation in our country. However the Jamat has its malevolent influence and tentacles in different parts of our country and society. The main way to deal with them is through education.

As for our cricket team, yes good to see generally non-politicized young men from ordinary families who represent our nation and national figures, speaking out against Jamati war criminals.

However I fear that "certain" people on this forum will know label these cricket players as "Indian secret agents" or "RAW agents", "communists", "dalals" etc, yet again proving how out of touch with reality and normal Bangladeshis they are.

Salute to the BCB head Papon, son of Awamileague leader... You did a great Job, cricket was the one thing that used to unite us, now you have destroyed it.... !

If they gone their own will then lanat on these begirat(Jahanam jai) but if they were forced(most likely) to join then I have my sympathy with them. They can always repay next time.

Al-Zakir is calling for them to be cursed (lanat) and to be punished with hellfire (jahanam).

So going to a public gathering in a public square means you should go to hell?

Also I doubt the players were forced as Habibul Bashar was there and he is no longer a Bangladeshi player or playing in the Bangladeshi league.

He is just an ordinary Bangladesh like the million or so other people who want justice.

However Jamati-supporters here will blame everything on "Awami" this and "Awami" that apart from accepting that their own version of "reality" (which has led them to only 4.6% of the votes) is actually false and that they need a serious reality check.

they talk about India more than about Bangladesh :coffee:

Well I felt they would somehow connect the presence of the Bangladeshi national cricket team to the Awami League, as in their eyes everything is an Awami or Indian plot.

One of them on this thread has already blamed it on the Awami league despite the fact that Habibul Bashar doesn't even play anymore so most likely came due to his own convictions.

This obsessive hatred for India is poisonous and destructive.

India is not perfect and has its share of faults but blaming everything in the universe on India just destroys their credibility and makes them a laughing stock. It also does very little to help them increase their 4.6% of the vote.

Typical hard core Jamaatis will always see conspiracy when the people who committed crimes are punished. They see Hindu majority India as their enemy since they have to gather support because of religious fundamentalism.

Portray India as a devil and gather support by invoking religious sentiments, these guys donot know how to progress after they get power, Pakistan is an example.

@animelive Same is in case of few of our neighbors in West. They are all getting orgasmic about a terrorist hanged in India and
opened dozens of thread while don't even discuss in recent bombing in their own country and lack of Justice in their country.

Like I say, Wrong Priorities. :enjoy:
