The Egyptian Armed Forces carries out the largest combined arms exercise in the region since "Badr-1996"

The Egyptian Armed Forces Official Spokesman, Brigadier General Mohammed Samir reveals details on "Badr-2014" the largest exercise in the MENA region since "Badr-1996"

The Official Military Spokesman, Brigadier General Mohammed Samir, declared at a news conference on Saturday that the Armed Forces is conducting the largest strategic exercise ("Badr-2014") among all the tactical formations and main branches since 1996.

The Official Spokesman stressed that "Badr-2014" is the most sophisticated exercise the Armed Forces has conducted in terms of planning, training, and size of forces involved, pointing out that the size of the forces involved in "Badr-2014" is double that involved in "Badr-1996".

He added that the implementation of Badr-2014 will involve two major phases. The opening or primary phase which will include the preparation and processing of the forces and equipment involved and eventually their deployment. The secondary phase or the principal phase of the exercise will include the building up of defences in order to carry out a strategic defensive operation which will last for 27 days. The exercise began on the 11th of October and will end on the 6th of November.

He also added that the theme of "Badr-2014" will be the ability to effectively manage a strategic defensive operation, in order to repel a hostile enemy attack. The aim of the exercise is to boost the experience of leaders, deploy large forces effectively, ensure quick and decisive decisions are carried out in response to differing situations or emergencies, ensure forces are effectively inserted by sea and air, protect shipping lanes, and to achieve air supremacy or domination in order for the Air Force to operate effectively throughout the exercise.

He also explained that the Navy is carrying out an exercise called "Zat Alsarrawy" with the participation of all its weapons systems, which include frigates, fast attack missile craft, off shore patrol vessels, and submarines. The Navy's exercise is part of the larger Armed Force's exercise "Badr-2014", he explained. The exercise is being carried out both in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and includes the insertion of Navy forces by sea, and the insertion of Special Forces to conduct raids behind enemy lines. He explained that the Navy will be supported by the Air Force, Air Defence, and Electronic Warfare assets during and after the preparation and deployment of Naval assets in order to destroy hostile enemy threats, he explained the Air Force will deploy several types of fighters, helicopters, and transport aircraft to support the Navy.

He also revealed that the management of air operations on several strategic fronts is one of the tasks assigned to the Air Force during "Badr-2014", pointing out that Air Force fighter jets will provide support and security during every phase of the exercise, engaging air threats, as well as providing air support for forces on the ground or at sea alongside its other tasks.

He added that the participation of the Air Defence in exercise "Badr-2014" will be represented in the provision of a live fire exercise in order to protect and secure the skies of Egypt against different aerial threats. He pointed out that the exercise will include units from the Mechanised Infantry, Armoured Divisions, Artillery, and Rapid Deployment Forces.

The Brigadier General also explained that "Badr-2014" will include formation of troops conducting strategic maneuvers while operating the Multiple Intergrated Laser Engagement System in order to simulate a realistic war scenario. The Brigadier also explained that formations of troops will be covered and supported by Navy assets while advancing beyond obstacles under a live fire scenario.

The Brigadier General also pointed out that the Special Forces and Paratroopers will be involved in the exercise, they will be tasked with air insertions and conducting raids and ambushes behind enemy lines.

Did not think Egypt had Alpha Jets.. interesting to see what role they play in these CAS sorties. Cant really be much effective on its eastern/northern front as these jets will not survive there. So I am guessing this is just for show in this exersize and an opportunity to see if in the dire need they are pushed into action how they will survive.

They would only be used in an area covered by the Air Defence and with multi-role jets such as F-16s in the area. Mig-21s and trainer aircraft have been used to simulate OPFOR in the past though, so it could be that.

Possibly. They might still have relevance vis-a-vis a new threat from the Libyan border via militants... I have a feeling that Egypt may end up finding ISIL-Libya soon.

Not likely, EAF Mirage III Horus are stationed at Mursa Matruh AFB (nearest AFB to the western border) and they are certainly more than capable in the strike/CAS role as a result of upgrades which include an inbuilt FLIR and the ability to use PGMs.

If you believe the rumors and conspiracies Egypt is already fighting Ansar Alsharia and their affiliates in Libya.

I hope so, so called "islamists" are the Muslims biggest enemies. They should be hunted and made to repent or face extermination.,

Rumours are irrelevant. Egypt is the only nation that is currently still "stable" within the old paradigm and hence will end up being the target of ire from the ISIS. Considering the Muslim Brotherhood had its close ties with the cancer known as Hizb-ut-Tahrir.. there is little left to chance that there may be members or supporters of that party who may still hold the idea of a caliphate and hence would turn sympathetic to the ISIS.
Unless Sisi takes immediate and drastic measures to wipe out the remnants of all these misplaced and misguided pan-Islamic ideals.. there is a high degree of probability that the ISIS "virus" may catch on in Egypt and in the neighbourhood soon.

Strategic deployment of forces from all military regions and armies under the protection of the Egyptian Air Defence Command and the Egyptian Air Force as part of Badr-2014. Land movement is being facilitated by the Military Police. Egyptian Navy and Disasters/Rescue Office conduct a SAR mission in the Red Sea.

The 3rd Army conducts an amphibious landing on a beach in southern Sinai in participation with the Egyptian Navy , while Paratroopers are air inserted, under the cover of the Egyptian Air Defence and Egyptian Air Force.
