At least 20 people were killed while over 50 were wounded in a blast at a Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) convention in the Khar tehsil of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district on Sunday, officials said.
Bajaur District Emergency Officer Saad Khan confirmed the casualties and number of injuries to Dawn.com.
He said Maulana Ziaullah Jan, a key JUI-F leader in Khar, also passed away in the blast. The officer added that the injured persons were being moved to hospitals in Peshawar and Timergera.

Dawn.com’s correspondent, who was present at the blast site, said a local journalist was among those injured.
Meanwhile, television footage showed panic-stricken people gathering at the site following the blast as ambulances arrived to move the injured to hospitals. Afterwards, a large police contingent cordoned off the area.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, in a statement issued by the party’s media cell, expressed grief over the incident. He sought an inquiry into the attack from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the KP government.
“May Allah raise the ranks of martyrs,” Rehman said and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
He also appealed to JUI-F workers to immediately reach hospitals and provide blood donations.
Earlier, JUI-F leader Hafiz Hamdullah said he was supposed to attend the convention today but could not because of some personal commitments.
“I strongly condemn the blast and want to give a message to the people behind it that this is not jihad but terrorism,” the JUI-F leader said while speaking to Geo News.
He asserted that today’s incident was an attack on humanity and Bajaur.
Hamdullah demanded that the blast should be probed, recalling that this was not the first that the JUI-F had been targetted. “This has happened before […] our workers have been targetted. We raised our voice over this in the Parliament but no action was taken.”
He also extended his condolences to grieving families and urged the provincial government to provide the best medical facilities to the injured.
In a statement on the PPP Media Cell, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari condemned the blast and extended condolences to the bereaved.
“The federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments should bring the patrons of terrorists to justice,” he said, stressing that terrorists and their planners should be eliminated.
Former president Asif Ali Zardari said terrorists were everyone’s enemies. “Like Swat, the entire country needs to be cleansed of the nurseries of terrorism,” he stated.
Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed also condemned the blast and extended his condolences over the deaths.
“The federal and provincial governments, forces, intelligence agencies and civil administration have completely failed to protect the people,” he tweeted.
“The return of terrorism proves that the government’s security plan/policy has failed and tribal districts of KP are in the middle of this fire,” the JI senator said and demanded that a joint in-camera session of the Parliament should be called to address the issue of rising terrorism.

Bajaur Updates:- As of now, there have been a total of 41 Martyred. Among them, 37 bodies have been handed over to their respective families, while three unidentified bodies are currently at the Mortuary of DHQ Bajaur.
- 38 critical patients have been admitted for medical care. Out of these, 10 have received treatment at DHQ Bajaur OT, 16 were transported via Pak Army Helicopter to Peshawar, and 12 have been referred to DHQ Hospital Timergara.
- Moreover, there are around 50 or more patients with minor injuries who have been provided with necessary medical treatment.

Very sad news, so many innocents died. Most likely an inside job, TTP and JUI are allies. JUI has lost all support in kpk and it will be good for elections 2023.35-40 killed.

Any way, Diesel group is violent political party and terrorist sympathizers, supporters and funders.

KHAR, Pakistan — A powerful bomb ripped through a rally by supporters of a hard-line cleric and political leader in the country’s northwestern Bajur district that borders Afghanistan on Sunday, police and health officials said. At least 55 people were killed and 135 were wounded in what one official said was a suicide attack.
Senior police officer Nazir Khan told NBC News that a religious political party run by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Jamiat Ulema Islam party, had organized a workers’ convention in Khar town of Bajur tribal district on Sunday where the explosion took place.
While Khan said earlier there was “no information about nature of the blast,” Jan said it was a suicide attack.
Azam Khan, head of the emergency room at Khar’s main hospital, previously said 35 bodies were brought to the hospital and some were taken back by relatives while the number of wounded was more than 100 as those who earlier went to near small clinics for medical aid consequently brought to the main government hospital.
The number of dead and injured ticked up throughout the day. Jalil Jan, a spokesperson for the political party, told NBC News the death toll had risen to 55 and that some of the 135 injuries were critical.

Government administrator Mohibullah Khan Yousufzai also previously said death toll rose to 35 and the number of wounded was well over 100. He said the serious wounded people were being airlifted to provincial capital, Peshawar, for better medical care.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but the Islamic State group operates across the border in Afghanistan.
Maulana Ziaullah, the local chief of Rehman’s party, was among the dead. Senator Abdur Rasheed and former lawmaker Maulana Jamaluddin was also on the stage but escaped unhurt. Party officials said Rehman was not in the rally.
Rehman is considered to be a pro-Taliban cleric and his political party is part of the coalition government in Islamabad. It is not known whether Rehman was present. Meetings are being organized across the country to mobilize supporters for the coming elections.
Bajur, once used to be a tribal region but now a district, has been a safe haven for Islamic militants until recent years when Pakistani military carried out massive operations to eliminate militancy from the tribal region. Militants still strike attacking security forces and civilians often.
A statement from Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said officials "condemn" the blast.
"The Islamic Emirate expresses deep condolences to the affected families," adding that officials pray for the "martyrs" to go to Islamic heaven and "for the speedy recovery of the injured."
"Such crimes are in no way justified or acceptable," Mujahid said
