Pakistan have not yet announced their main squad for the Asia Cup, but Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have announced 18-man squad for the camp on Friday. Former captain Azhar Ali have been left out of the squad.

From the 26-man squad, the selectors trimmed it to 18-man for the final phase of training. Chief selector Inzamum Ul Haq announced the 18-man squad after discussing with skipper Sarfraz Ahmed and coach Mickey Arthur on Friday.

The final phase of the training is set to take place in Lahore from 3rd to 10th September before they travel to Dubai to play the Asia Cup, which starts from 15th September.

Imad Wasim and opening batsman Shan Masood are on course for a return to the national team. The men in green have been placed in Pool A in the six-nation Asia Cup along with old rivals India. The most awaiting match will be held in Dubai on 19th September.

This year’s Asia Cup will be again held in 50-over ODI format. The last Asia Cup which was held in 2016 was a T20 format where India won the tournament after beating Bangladesh in the final.

Pakistan 18 man squad:
Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Mohammad Hafeez, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Haris Sohail, Sarfraz Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Imad Wasim, Hassan Ali, Usman Khan Shinwari, Mohammed Amir, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf.

Final squad expected after conclusion of final phase of training (September 10)

LAHORE: Pakistan left all-rounders Mohammad Hafeez and Imad Wasim out of a 16-man squad for the six-nation Asia Cup, to be played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from next week, selectors announced Tuesday.

But left-handed opener Shan Masood gets his first chance in Pakistan´s one-day squad after scoring 1,200-plus runs in the two domestic one-day tournaments, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq said.

The 28-year-old has so far played 12 Tests for Pakistan.

Sarfraz Ahmed will lead the side, which opens their Cup campaign against the wildcard entrant on September 16 before taking on arch-rivals India in a highly-anticipated match three days later. Both rounds are in Dubai.

Hafeez, 37, was part of Pakistan´s 5-0 one-day series win in Zimbabwe in July, but was not played in any of the matches.

"We conducted fitness tests and since there is no compromise on fitness we have not included Hafeez and Imad Wasim," Inzamam told media while announcing the squad in Lahore.

The Asia Cup begins September 15 and features India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and a qualifier team.

Six teams -- Hong Kong, Singapore, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Malaysia -- are currently facing off in Kuala Lumpur to secure the final berth.

Cup teams are divided in two groups. Two sides are pulled for the Super Four rounds, after which the top two finishers go to the September 28 final in Dubai.

Squad: Sarfraz Ahmed (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Haris Sohail, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir, Junaid Khan, Usman Khan Shinwari and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

India will be without Kohli who has been rested. Pak should probably be the favorites here because of that and the fact they have been consistently playing here for last 9 or so years consistently. However the indian spinners Yadav and Chahal will be tricky to play.

Thank God Hafeez has been left out, hopefully it stays that way. The guy is WAAAAY past his prime and has been pretty useless with both the bat and ball in his last 10-20 games. I think the perfect team to carry to the WC would be:

1) Fakhar
2) Imam Ul Haq
3) Babar Azam
4) Shoaib Malik
5) Sarfraz Ahmed
6) Asif Ali
7) Fahim Ashraf
8) Shadab Khan
9) Hasan Ali
10) M. Amir
11) Usman Khan

A team that can literally bat till No. 10, have strong hard afridi type hitters in the middle-low order, a dream pace attack with 2 lefties and righties, and a strong top order (I dont think the top 3 batsmen have ever before averaged more than 50 in ODI's like the current line up)

and in the 15 man squad I would also have Harris Sohail, Junaid Khan, Imad Wasim and Shan Masood

Mushfiqur stars in 137-run rout of Sri Lanka

Bangladesh 261 (Mushfiqur 144, Mithun 63, Malinga 4-23) beat Sri Lanka124 (Tharanga 27, Dilruwan 29, Mustafizur 2-20, Mehidy 2-21, Mashrafe 2-25) by 137 runs

Mushfiqur Rahim's sublime 144 hauled Bangladesh kicking and screaming to 261, then a fired-up Mashrafe Mortaza set in motion a Sri Lanka collapse, and the first match of the Asia Cup soon turned into a thrashing - Bangladesh claiming victory by 137 runs, after Sri Lanka crashed to 69 for 7, then 124 all out.

A third Bangladesh senior had also played an impressive role in the victory. Tamim Iqbal faced only four deliveries in all, but he had crucially come out to bat again with a broken wrist - which he had sustained in the second over - with nine wickets down. Mushfiqur made spectacular use of his teammate's bravery, hitting a further three fours and three sixes, as 32 runs were added to the team total, lifting Bangladesh from a modest score to a competitive one.

Though his contribution was eventually drowned out by those of Bangladesh's experienced players, one Sri Lanka old-timer also had an outstanding outing. Lasith Malinga, playing his first international in a year, shook off the rust, struck twice in his first over, and finished with 4 for 23 from 10 overs, to suggest that his one-day career was for from done yet. Had his teammates held all their catches, Malinga might have wreaked even more damage. He should have had Mohammad Mithun - who went on to make 63 in a 131-run stand with Mushfiqur - caught at mid on for one, if Angelo Mathews had held the catch while diving forward. In general, Sri Lanka were woeful in the field, spilling no fewer than four catches, including two off Mushfiqur, who was reprieved on 10 and 85. For the umpteenth time in the last three years, their catching can be said to have cost Sri Lanka a one-dayer.

Though perhaps it is their batting that was the worse suit on this evening (it's often difficult to work out which discipline was the worst with this Sri Lanka ODI team). Kusal Mendis - opening in place of Danushka Gunathilaka - was Mashrafe's first victim, as he got himself trapped in front of the stumps the first ball he faced, but Upul Tharanga had been storming away at the other end, and looked good for a big innings, until, typically, he suddenly played a poor shot. Attempting to steer a Mashrafe delivery to third man, Tharanga only managed to play it on to his stumps. Mashrafe would have a second important wicket soon after - nailing Dhananjaya de Silva in front of the stumps for a duck, with de Silva going on to waste Sri Lanka's review, which could potentially have saved Kusal Perera later on.

In general, this was not an evening of good decision-making from Sri Lanka's batsmen. Kusal Perera's lbw (he had actually got a thin inside edge to that ball from Mehidy Hasan) left the team 38 for 4, not long before Angelo Mathews compounded Sri Lanka's woes by running out Dasun Shanaka as the pair attempted a painstaking recovery. Thisara Perera holed out soon enough, and Mathews was himself dismissed for 16 off 34 balls - trapped lbw by Rubel Hossain. That Sri Lanka even survived into the 36th over and made as many as 124 was down to a plucky tail, who hung around, despite the target being clearly out of their reach. Even the tail's efforts were not enough to prevent a record though - this victory was Bangladesh's biggest in terms of runs, away from home.

Although Mushfiqur had a little luck early on - having been dropped in the 10th over - his was nevertheless a terrific innings. He had begun slowly, playing out a maiden against the red-hot Malinga, before later producing Bangladesh's first boundary of the match, off the last ball of the eighth over. He built steadily alongside Mithun, taking an especial liking to Sri Lanka's finger-spinners, often venturing down the track to them, sometimes to hit boundaries.

Although after Mithun fell, Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain followed in quick succession, Mushfiqur batted efficiently with the tail, looking for boundaries at the start of each over, and singles towards the end. Despite his best efforts, the lower order batsmen continued to perish, however, and Bangladesh found themselves nine down in the 47th over, which should have been the end of their innings given one of their batsmen had suffered a fractured wrist earlier in the innings.

Tamim, though, made the courageous decision to bat again, with his bottom hand in a cast. He hid that injured left hand behind his body, and rode out a Suranga Lakmal ball at his ribs, to hand the strike over to Mushfiqur, who didn't disappoint. Mushfiqur moved expertly around the crease to smoke a spate of valuable late boundaries, moving past his previous best ODI score of 117, while twice making sure to take a single off the last ball of the over, to ensure Tamim did not have to face another ball. Mushfiqur had hit successive sixes off the first two balls of the final over, bowled by Thisara Perera, before he holed out attempting a third six. His valiant hand would turn out to be more than enough for Bangladesh to claim an important first victory in the tournament.

Once upon a time Asia Cup was quite intresting when Sri Lanka was a top class team....Now...Asia Cup lost its charm for Indian viewer as it is not so exiting...For us...Asia Cup means another biletareal match between India and Pakistan..BD and Sl are not providing enough challenge ro India or Pakistan to make Asia Cup as am intresting series..

The start to Asia Cup have been a rather slow and boring one but i expect things to spice up with that India Pak match and then when teams reach round of 4. A reason of low crowd is the UAE temperature these days. Plus the matches have been boring, low scoring and one sided. The pitches were dead slow.

I'm not much of a cricket fan, but damn, what has happened to the once mighty Sri Lankans? Could someone kindly tag a few Sri Lankan members, so that we can have their perspective?

BTW, Bangladesh has been doing pretty well in recent years in limited overs matches - at least enough to rise above the "minnows" tag.

Pakistan is stupid to play 4 pacers and just one spinner on this spinning tracks. There is no requirement for Fahim Ashraf in this scorching heat.

As far is Sri Lanka is concerned well they look depleted and uninterested. Sad to see them going down so easily against below average sides just when few months remain for the world cup.

winning toss give huge advantage on these pitches and lankans had bad luck to lost toss twice ..afghan spin attack is brilliant and suit for these slow pitches

Toss will also be crucial in Indo Pak match

Nice to see more muslim teams like BD and Afghanistan now competing in cricket. Pakistan used to be the only muslim team that could compete at the highest level. Muslim Afghanistan has just defeated buddhist Sri lanka.
Let's see if muslim Pakistan can defeat hindu india in this asia cup, or if muslim BD or muslim Afghanistan can give hindu india a tough time in the 2nd round of asia cup.

Some people never change with the passage of time...Again, i will be equally happy if Afganistan or BD being a good cricketing nation like Australia....But my consideration will be due to their proximity to us rather than they are a Muslim state...
