Massive plan has been taken to reform the organizational structure of Bangladesh Armed Forces with a view to modernizing it in line with Forces Goal -2030. The 20-year long term plan would be executed in four steps each with five-year tenure.

After completion of the reformation, the army would get two new army commands, one infantry division along with all necessary brigades and units; two air defence brigades; two mechanise brigades and several other armored, artillery and engineering battalions along with supporting units.

Planning minister Air Vice Marshal AK Khandaker, also in charge of Armed Forces Division in the parliament, told the House on Tuesday, " Massive works are going on to materialize the Forces Goal-2030 keeping adjustment with the government dream project vision-2021.

Taking a question from Jafar Iqbal Siddiqui (Nilfamarai-1) during question and answer session, he further said, "As per the plan, the army will get adequate quantities of military hardware including armoured personnel carriers (APCs), modern anti-tank weaponry, anti-aircraft armaments and combat engineering equipments."

"Besides, new artillery and air defence units, naval engineering battalions, technical battalions, ordnance battalion and field hospitals will be included in the army. Already, several new weaponries, including sophisticated MBT-2000 tanks have been bought for armoured core. Besides, purchase of modern military hardware including, self-propelled guns, side ranging equipments and weapon locating RADARs are going on for the artillery. Even, several helicopters have already been bought in line with modernizing the army," he stated.

He also informed the House about the procurement of multiple launched rocket system, automatic grenade launchers, ground surveillance RADARs, local warning RADARs and military aircrafts, for the army.

Referring to different steps taken to modernize the naval force, he said, "As a part of the total plan, naval helicopters, maritime patrol aircrafts and new ships would be included in the Bangladesh Navy."
"Already two choppers have been bought from Italy to strengthening BNS Bangabandhu while five war ships including a survey vessel have also been procured from a friendly country. Besides, an 'Off the Shelf' frigate is purchased and two other corvette ships are now under manufacturing in a friendly country," he said.

Khandaker further informed the parliament that the government in principal has given approval to buy two submarines and a coast guard cutter while four LCD/LCU would be built in local shipyard.

Meanwhile, pointing upgradation of the air force, he said, "The air force is now equipped with surface-to-air missile system (SAM) to intensify security in the south-eastern region of the country. Apart from it, a contract has been signed with a friendly country to procure 16 F-7 BG1 and FT-7 BG1 fighter aircrafts. Already, the first consignment of fighters has reached here while the second consignment will reach in March this year."

"On the other hand, the installation of RADARs are going on at Cox's Bazar, Paharakanchonpur air force base, Motiur air force base and Moulavibazar region," he informed the parliament.

Good to see the army getting new divisions and brigades.

New Naval engineering battalion for the army?? Got to be some mistake here

The news also revealed that the army procured multiple launch rocket system(wonder which one). And two new corvette being built in a friendly country(type 56)

The only thing that is pi$$ing me off is that they are building 4 more of those ugly(and probably useless) indigenous LCUs

Although the information given by the Planning Minister is quite elaborate, but it is not complete. Since the govt started procuring quite a huge amount of military weapons, some real and some promised, it is becoming quite difficult to tally the numbers. However, the expansion is true for all the branches of the armed forces. Planning Minister is specific about the procurement of submarines. It is two units, finally.

It is a happy news. However, I only hope, if China-made, then these should at least be Ming class diesel-electric type. This class has once surprised the US navy in the south pacific by suddenly emerging over to the surface only 9 km away from the US fleet that was escorting one large aircraft carrier (probably Nimitzu?), it is so silent and stealthy!!

Well all these were informed to the parliament, so most probably we will be getting those. Things like the type 56 corvettes are currently under construction in china, so it is safe to say we ordered them already and we are awaiting delivery.

Song class or yuan class would have been a better alternative compared to ming class. I understand that due to budgetary constrains bangladesh may have to buy ming class. However, ming class subs are really old, and nearly obsolete in today's world.

About the incident it happened with a song class sub not ming class. The incident occurred in 2006, with USS kitty hawk

I heard that the Yuan-class subs are deathly silent.

Ming-class subs are really, extremely old. But it's a start. It takes many years to truly master a military submarine. A simple one like the Ming-class may be the right start-up needed, and at a low cost.

I think you wanted to say Song class not Ming class. Ming is older, probably all are retired or waiting to be. Song class is China's first sophisticated submarine. The AC was U.S.S. Kitty Hawk.

I have no knowledge about submarines, but all of us buy used cars. It is obvious that we should not buy 20 year old junk which is essentially scrap metal, falling apart and very expensive to maintain. It is better to buy a newer model, as new as we can afford, so the maintenance cost is lower and service life is longer, a better bang for your buck.

Thanks for the very nice article above about Song class sub popping up in the middle of US military exercise. It shows how quiet it can be running on electric motors.

Multiple launch rocket system is WS-22 :

First quality then beauty. If the LCUs work well, it doesn't matter if it's ugly. Later the concentration can be given on beauty...after all it's indigenous :) .

A whole new infantry division? Awesome! If we buy song class, we should get just one for now. Then after a few years we could go for multiple song or yuan class subs.

For starter I think older ones are good because subs are sophisticated tech and take time to master. Hope it'd be refurbished Song not Ming.

Yes, it is my bad mistake. The submarine was a Song Class that surprised the US navy in the Pacific. I am in support of this Song class purchase. Ming is the oldest model and will do no good to our sea defence. However, I will prefer a free of cost one unit of Ming and two units of Song class purchased with cash money. Anyway, Submarine itself a asssuring news.

Recent progress in armed forces its amusing. Makes me proud. Its amazing that wee r getting new arms, ships, battalion and so on.
One of the best best news is we r about to become four dimensional force by subs on our side.

1) AS far as I remember reading somewhere that the type 056 corvettes for the BN will be 10m longer than the ones China has built for its own and Pakistan Navies, although it will remain designated as type-056. I guess the extra is needed to accomodate a helicopter. can someone tell us for sure why the extra length is needed.

2) I am in favour of Song class of submarines for the BN, and thanks for clearing the incident involving the Song and US Navy in the Pacific.

Again about the type 056 Corvette, I have come across an article that designates the type 056 as equivalent to the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) of the US Navy. 056 is is a stealth ship that can compete equally against any US ship of same class. I would like to share the article with others.

This Is China's Response To the US Navy's Struggling Coastal Warship Program

The fact that China's been building up its military with speed and agility recently is nothing new, but Beijing is now going head-to-head with one of the U.S. Navy's most troubled programs.

The Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is meant to be part of the fleet being moved to the Pacific, and though a couple versions of the ship were put to sea four years ago, the program is still beset by problems and nowhere near combat ready.

Michael Fabey at Aviation Week acquired Navy documents that show the following components had issues on the LCS USS Freedom's recent voyage:

Heat, flame, smoke and flood alarms; hydraulic power unit systems, airborne mission zone lift hoist and platform; lifting capstan; gypsy winch; oily water separator and transfer pump; reverse osmosis system; watertight doors, degaussing system, gas-turbine intake plenum space; and blow-in doors.

The ship also appears to be minus one of its four engines, upon which repair and reassembly work was started this month, according to the documents.

This is a ship that's been in service for four years, cost over $600 million dollars, and is still having trouble performing basic functions — and now China has launched a littoral combat ship (LCS) of its own.

Christian Le Miere at Naval Forces and Maritime Security reports Beijing put its first Type 056 craft into the water a few weeks ago where it will become part of a four-ship team patrolling China's coast.

Apart from looking very similar to the U.S. LCS, the 056 will have stealth characteristics and carry some impressive weaponry like Type 87 anti-submarine rockets, AK-176 Russian 76 mm gun systems, and C-803 anti-ship missiles.

It's these ships that China may look to when enforcing the exclusive economic zones in the country's territorial waters.
