Armed Forces all geared up

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has once again indicated that Pakistan-based terror groups were planning another attack in India.
Following inputs from intelligence agencies about another Mumbai-like terrorist strike in the country, the Ministry of Defence on Friday held a comprehensive security review and the armed forces were asked to remain vigilant to pre-empt any strike.

Defence Minister A K Antony discussed the situation with the three service chiefs and National Security Advisor M K Naryananan for around three hours to prepare action plan on the intelligence inputs. The meeting took place a day before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leaves for a crucial visit to the United States on Saturday.

The Armed Forces have been asked to be prepared and pre-empt any strike which is likely to be orchestrated from across the border. Top functionaries of the government have gone public on several occasions in the recent past to declare that terror groups like Lashkare- Toiba were planning another major strike in India.
The Prime Minister in an interview to The Washington Post said that the Pakistan-based terror groups were planning another attack similar to 26/11. There has been no terrorist strike after the Mumbai attacks. But the government sources said that organisations in Pakistan are under pressure to create unrest in India.

Pakistan is already witnessing series of bomb blasts in its various cities and New Delhi has been apprehensive that it might spill over to India.
An assessment of the security situation in the region was also carried out in the review meeting. The intelligence agencies have routinely issued specific alerts to the Armed Forces. The forces were asked to follow up on these leads and not take them as routine.

Fresh intelligent inputs have emerged during the investigation of terror plotters David Headley and Thawwur Rana who are being interrogated in the US. The FBI has passed on crucial information to India about their plans. Security of several major institutions has already been briefed up.

The meeting on Friday was represented mainly by the Armed Forces, Defence Secretary and the National Security Advisor. It pertained to preparing response of the Armed Forces guarding the frontiers.
The Defence Minister has already asked agencies to operate on the principles of integration rather than function independently as was witnessed after the Mumbai attacks. The effort is being made to ensure that there is no confusion of any sorts in case of another eventuality.
