Arguments of choosing JF-17 Thunder over JAS-39 Gripen

Hey khalidali you show comparison of FC1 and Gripen ...but i think FC1 is the export version of J10 not jf17 ...correct me if m wrong ????

You should try to cut out a little bit on whatever your smoking these days. . .

FC-1 = JF-17

FC-20 = J-10B

Lets stick to the topic gentlemen. Developing the JF-17 will build the aviation base for fighter aircraft technology in Pakistan. Technical know how, training, infrastructure created in manufacturing K-8, JF-17 and FC-20s will be the corner stone for Pakistan's aviation industry.

In order to be self sufficient the PAF needs to continue the path with K-8, JF-17s and their later versions can be improved. Newer versions of JF-17s can have improved features that are not in the current models. The fighter gap needs to be filled ASAP and enhancements and improvements can continue concurrently.

Gripen is bad becasue , it would be downgraded , software, and unknown hidden blocks , and also its radars would be suspectible to espionage and hacks

JF17 thunder enjoys Chinese Innovation , yes it uses commercial grade software programming but its open to us so we can make adjustment on just about anything

We also have UNLIMITED options to load the JF17 thunder, with Gripen we had to depend on some congress like thing in Sweeden etc I mean really ? Is that good ? Just because gripen had that green shinny visor like thing in its cockpit

JF17 thunder is FAR more special and superior as it will be upgraded to block 2/3 which will make it more superior plane

Not to forget the new engine addition :cheesy:

BEST OF ALL IF NEEDED WE COULD UP PRODUCTION FROM 30 planes a year to 30 planes a month with more engineer and man power

It doesnt use the less known Ada language which is generally used for military grade software development..But instead C++ was used to tap into the highly skilled and abundant software developers available in Pakistan...That doesnt mean that the software is less secure.
Since there is no shortage of expert C++ programmers in Pakistan and China..Any software upgrade will be far cheaper and far more effective.
Use of Ada had confined Software development to select few.

C++ is the shyt.

For so many years, so many programmers have played with it. It is perfectly fine for Jf-17. When you want a project to help the local industry, this be the first step.

gripen has a US engine - thats enough argument against it!!!

This thread is Kinda obsolete.

Because PAF has confirm orders for JF-17 uptp 250.

Now if you want compare them as in like JF-17 vs F-16 vs F-18 etc etc go ahead.

Before Any ones goes any further please read this is not a VS thread but on the contrary, it is to compare the 2 platforms to analise why do people think that the one is better then the other, and we should have gone for this rather then that.

Now many here advocate that Gripen is a better platform and Pakistan should have opted for it, rather then trying to produce their own in thunder. Now for arguments sake, let say that Gripen was not sanctions prone, and we could buy them just like we are producing the thunder. What would you still go with, being a layman while looking at the specs they look kinda similar to me, apart from the fact that Gripen has the experience of Saab behind it. What do you guys think. And again this is not a Vs thread. Please dont make it into one. Thanks.

Hi,

You have to go for the proven system----numbers on the paper don't mean nothing---.

Only one argument in favour of Thunder ---- Strengthen your indigenous capabilities. !

all the physical parameters of f16, jf17, gripen are strikingly similar --

except ofcourse jf17 lacks somewhat in composites [greater weight] , engine thrust and avionics---- is this a reason to dump the programme? .. certainly not -- as there is always room for improvement on successive blocks--

plus the programme can pay for itself in the form of experience obtained and sales

if we ever have to go for western fighters --- excess defence items category f16s are the best option

Even though the Quaid e Azaam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, had sought early in the creation of Pakistan for it to have a strong air force and defense capability, unfortunately, for a number of reasons we were unable to achieve this goal and investment, design and manufacturing know how could not be developed as one would have hoped -- With the help of China, we are now developing a capability that will one day soon enable a robust defense of Pakistan, it may even allow defense planners to envision the day the PAF turns from a tactical force to a strategic Air and Space force capable not just of defending the Pakistani nation and state but to a force that can deliver "Justice and retribution" to the enemies of Pakistan in their home countries.

And because this capability, though nascent, is of such importance, almost a existential imperative, that it does not matter what F15 or F16 or Grippen or whatever have to offer -- with the JFT/Ziaolong Pakistan learns how to better defend the nation and the state, even as it cements a partnership that may yet rescue hundreds of millions from the wars outside powers are determined to impose on the region.

So for these reasons, for these arguments there really is no other responsible way forward, other than the JFT/Ziaolong

Pakistan, instead of going for more F-16, which is more embargo driven, should have gone for Gripen's new versions with ToT.(For ToT, the numbers must be more than 60-70. Production experiance of Gripen with western weapons on it will be good experiance for the JF-17's further development.

As much as the 16s are embargo driven the grippen also carries an American engine.

according tothe airchief , paf was not in the position to absorb that much tech , at that time--

having 2 western embargo prone platforms alonge 3 other platforms would be an administerative nightmare

a BIG THANK YOU TO THE ORIGINAL POSTER... I never realized that the Thunder was almost at par with the Grippin!!! JzkAllah to Taimi khan as well because I had the question of data sharing link system in the Grippin also...

as for my opinion... DEFINITELY THE THUNDER!!!! to produce ones own gives us much better expertise than following Capitalist restrictions of cant reverse engineer nonsense...

I say Pak should buy a couple of Grippins and check them out in dogfight trainings to see what its advantages are... then reverse engineer and add improvements to the Thunder II

No need to buy 2 Gripens to see its dog fight capabilities.

Once IAF's MMRCA technical evaluation is out, you will get everything about Gripen, Rafale, F-16-18,Mig-35 & EF capabilities..

I feel, China should have sent J-10 too for this competition..
