Apple Inc (AAPL.O) will increase its investment in China, one of its most important markets, and build its first Asia-Pacific research and development center in the country by the end of 2016, Chief Executive Tim Cook said on Tuesday.

Cook made the comments in a meeting with Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, one of China's most senior officials, according to the official Chinese state broadcaster.

Just an "intent"
When the $ is in the bank then we start talking about it :-)

China is business friendly nation, Apple is welcome to compete freely and fairly on leveled playing field.

This news reminds me of Huawei being blocked out of US market due to "national security" concern a couple of years back, and the recent US investigation on Huawei exports to Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Cuba and Syria.

What a contrast? I hear alot about "free market", but who is practicing it?

looks like dear timothy had to go to plan b when india didn't seem to keen on apple.
apple is seeing china as a middle class economy who are the target market for general consumer goods

It seems that Apple is really anxious when iPhone is not even among top3 in China....
The glorious moment for iPhone and Samsung is in the trash box.

Q2 2016
Digitimes own research has Huawei listed as the top smartphone producer in China with a 14% market share from April through June. The 12.7% share earned by Oppo during the same time period was next, followed by Vivo and Xiaomi with 11.2% and 10.4% of the market, respectively. Apple was fifth with a single digit slice of the pie.

Well said bro, Huawei and OPPO are doing great! R&D center of Apple or any other consumer electronics brand isn't critical to the big picture, China's industrialization mission is "Made in China 2025". Of course we should welcome corporations with strong R&D capabilities, I would like to have the Global Top 100 (WIPO Global Patent Top 100 Applicants) to setup their R&D centers here. Among US firms, IBM and Microsoft are more relevant. Below list for #1-30:
