Imran clarifies party position on drones to NATO envoys

Chairman PTI Imran Khan, accompanied by Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Shireen Mazari and Naeemul Haq, held a dinner meeting with NATO envoys at the residence of the Greek Ambassador.
Mr Khan explained the PTI position on drones especially the fallout in FATA and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa in the form of heightened militancy and terrorism.
He referred to the APC mandate and the sabotage of the commencement of peace talks by a US drone attack. Khan made it clear that it was in keeping with the electoral commitments made by PTI on drones and the APC resolution - which was similar to earlier APC and Parliamentary resolutions - that PTI had finally taken the action of stopping NATO supplies through KP. Had the government moved on furthering the APC mandate and making it clear to the US that drones were not acceptable, the PTI may not have been compelled to take the step of halting NATO supplies through KP, Khan asserted. He stated this action was a protest which is the democratic right of people. "PTI does not want war with the US or NATO", but we need to send a clear message to the US that drones are destroying the very fabric of FATA and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa which is surrounded on three sides by FATA.

While appreciating the assistance provided by many of the NATO countries to the province of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa's social sector, Chairman Khan explained that all this assistance would be nullified if there was no peace and security in that province. As Khan explained, peace in KP cannot come without a total halt in drone attacks and commencement of dialogue. "It is only by ending the militants narrative of jehad that the state can isolate the hard liners from those prepared to dialogue", Khan stated.

Presently, Khan asserted, KP and its people and leadership were all under immense pressure and threat. That is why all the Parties in the Provincial Assembly, including those who had been seen as "pro-war", had passed a resolution in the Provincial Assembly demanding the federal government commence dialogue and stop drone attacks.

While conceding that there were multiple types of terrorism afflicting Pakistan, Khan reiterated that the fallout of the US War and drone attacks was fuelling an already incendiary situation.
Khan answered all the questions and concerns of the NATO envoys while making clear that PTI would stick to its principled position on drones, dialogue and NATO supplies.
Khan also expressed the hope that the NATO envoys would convey the PTI position to the US which is also an integral member of NATO. Khan reminded them that there was a national consensus against drones and the US War and it was counter productive for US interests also to continue with such policies.

US Defence Secretary in Pak: PTI's unflinching position on drones and its continuing stoppage of NATO supplies had successfully pressured the US.

p.s.

The US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has arrived in Pakistan on Monday for talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

It is the first visit by a US defence secretary to Islamabad in four years.

The Pentagon said the two men would hold "candid conversations" about how to "address common threats".

The visit comes at a time of tension between the countries about US drone strikes in Pakistan.

Last week the US military halted its ground cargo shipments from Afghanistan via Pakistan because of the risk to drivers after protests over drone strikes.

Pakistanis had blocked the US main supply route to Afghanistan, angry at civilian deaths caused by drones.

However, US officials say the suspension of shipments was a temporary measure and is now over.

PTI Press Release - USA's Defence Secretary in Islamabad today

Central Information Secretary PTI, Shireen Mazari, commented on the arrival of US secretary of Defence Hagel in Islamabad today saying that PTI's unflinching position on drones and its continuing stoppage of NATO supplies had successfully pressured the US. She pointed out that this was the first visit by a US Secretary of Defence in nearly four years.

Mazari demanded the federal government should now put its foot down and demand the US halt drones as they were unacceptable, illegal and our PHC, (as well as Amnesty) had declared them a war crime. "It is time for the federal government to implement the APC mandate and speak forcefully with the US," Mazari added.

The PTI's determination in stopping drones through halting NATO supplies showed a resolve which so far has been lacking in the federal government, Mazari asserted and added that the Hagel visit reflects yet another tactical success of the PTI strategy to pressure the US into halting drone attacks.

It is important to note that Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, visited Pakistan to meet with Pakistani leadership and hear their concerns. His visit came after almost four years when secretary Gates had visited Pakistan in early 2010. Secretary Hagel discussed issues concerning defense relationship, Pak-US bilateral ties and regional stability. He recognizes the tremendous support that Pakistan has provided in the war of terror and wishes to deepen the defense partnership between the two countries. We understand that there are some frictions and challenges in the relationship but Secretary Hagel wished to tackle that ‘head on’, said a senior officer travelling with the secretary. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of working together to beat terrorism in the region. Can anyone deny that peace is the ultimate desire of all parties concern even a common person is wishing for that?

Take the matters to the UN? Is this another cover for the public just to please those who are mad at the govt. for supporting the U.S. killing the Taliban?

NATO countries request reopening of supply routes, Imran refuses

Representatives of Nato member countries requested Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan to reopen supply routes to Afghanistan via Pakistan,Express News reported on Monday.

The Nato countries said that the blockade was causing inconvenience to the Nato forces in Afghanistan.

Imran, however, turned down the request and said that the blockade would continue till drone strikes are stopped.

On November 24, the PTI blocked the Nato supply route in Peshawar after inviting all political parties to join their protest against the drone attack in which Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed.

Activists in northwest Pakistan, some armed with clubs, have been forcibly searching trucks since late November to try to halt Nato supplies. In response, the US military suspended shipments of equipment out of Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Torkham is a key transit point used by the Americans and Nato to withdraw military hardware from Afghanistan, as part of a troop pullout set to end next year.

As Nawaz pushes on drones, Hagel pushes back on Nato supplies

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday called for an end to US drone campaign in Pakistan during a meeting with Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel, Express Newsreported.

Hagel arrived in Islamabad today for talks as Washington seeks to defuse tensions over controversial US drone strikes and Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan.

Nawaz said peaceful Pakistan is crucial for peace in the entire region and that drone strikes should be stopped to ensure this as well as better relationship between Pakistan and the US.

“Drone strikes have a negative impact on Pakistan’s efforts against extremism,” he stressed.

In the first visit by a US defence secretary in nearly four years, Hagel flew from Kabul to Islamabad and met Prime Minister Nawaz and other top officials, including the country’s new army chief.

Ties between Washington and Islamabad have been seriously strained over US drone strikes in the country’s tribal belt as well as alleged militants’ sanctuaries inside Pakistan.

“Secretary Hagel met with Prime Minister Nawaz on his visit to Washington earlier this year and looks forward to continuing candid and productive conversations,” Pentagon spokesperson Carl Woog told reporters on Sunday.

President Barack Obama has defended the drone strikes as an effective, lawful tool used with restraint to target suspected al Qaeda militants. But human rights groups and politicians in Pakistan say the missile attacks have killed innocent civilians and must stop.

Hagel warns over Nato supply closure

Hagel warned Sharif that US lawmakers could withhold military assistance if Islamabad failed to ensure security for the key supply route.

“There will be those home back in Congress… who will seize upon this issue if it continues to be a concern,” a defence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told reporters after Hagel’s talks with the prime minister.

The visit came as Hagel’s deputies withdrew Sunday’s statement that NATO shipments out of Afghanistan through Pakistan would resume due to the end of anti-drone protests.

In recent weeks activists opposed to the drone raids forcibly searched trucks in northwest Pakistan in a campaign to disrupt NATO supply routes through the Torkham gate border crossing.

The club-wielding protesters have prompted US officials to halt the shipments to protect the truck drivers.

Contractors were still concerned at the protests and the suspension had not been lifted, officials travelling with Hagel said.

Torkham gate is the main overland route used by the Americans and NATO to withdraw military hardware from Afghanistan as part of the troop pullout set to wrap up by the end of 2014.

The US provides major defence aid to Pakistan, including “coalition support funds” in which Washington reimburses Islamabad for the cost of counter-terrorism operations.

“The secretary made the point that we need to demonstrate the continued flow of goods in order to be able to continue fulfilling their reimbursements,” the defence official said.

Hagel visited Pakistan on Monday “in recognition of the tremendous support that Pakistan has provided in the war on terror”, a senior US defence official told reporters.

The defence secretary wanted to affirm continued US military assistance, the official said.

“There is some friction in the relationship” and Hagel wished to tackle that “head on”, he added.

Meeting with new COAS

As part of his brief visit to Islamabad, Hagel met with newly appointed army chief General Raheel Sharif in a bid to establish a constructive dialogue.

“Issues concerning (the) defence relationship, Pak-US bilateral ties and regional stability came under discussion,” the Pakistan military said after Hagel met the army chief.

The position holds special significance in Pakistan and US officials are anxious to forge a constructive dialogue with a figure expected to be at the centre of decision making on sensitive security questions.

The veteran infantry commander last month succeeded General Ashfaq Kayani, who is retiring after six years at the helm.

Hagel’s spokesperson said the defence secretary looked forward to discussing with his counterparts “the United States and Pakistan’s common interest in a stable Afghanistan.”

What ever pleases the Pakistani public. The ISI will always provide intel and drones keep droning.

thats like we have hired CIA and its drones on rent, but when you try to sabotage our interests, then you will be shown the way to the door, immediately !
