Analysts: Navy brass view F-35C's stealth as overrated ; US Navy cuts F-35C buy by one-third

Well overrated or underrated the fact is it is the only 5th generation fighter available in the market and those who want it would buy it. Those who think it is not worthy should go ahead and have a look ant Russian and Chinese stuff or may be make one themselves. I think from day one when US congress banned the sales of F-22 it was quiet obvious that F-35 is not the best in the world. How can people think US would sell the best thing they have and bring others on equal footings with themselves?

lol.. Please do not compare apple to orange. Lets take a good look at F-35 belly and see for yourself how stealthy it is.

While China develop J-20 becos its stealth feature is far superior than F-35.

But that does not mean US is bad aircraft designer. Its more to do with stupid decision to make F-35 an aircraft for 3 services of USMC, USN and USAF that restrict making it more stealthy due to the need of thrust vector for short take off. They shall have go for China J-31 twin engine design that allows a clean belly to improve stealthiness.

I like to know how you came to that conclusion.

but I did lmao when I was watching this

I knew it:yahoo:. The Navy hates stealth, and why wouldn't it? Navy sensors can easily detect stealth aircraft, it knows the limitations of stealth at sea, it killed the concept of stealth at sea. Add the F-35s poor performance to the mix and there is really no incentive to dropping the F/A-18 or UCLASS from the Navy's ledger in favor of more F-35s. I don't hate the F-35, but damn am I glad the Navy isn't investing too much into it.

Good news all around, with the money they save from not buying the F-35 the Navy can invest more in:

But the problem is that as more and more orders are cancelled, the price of F-35 will go up, resulting in loss of more orders. It's a snowball effect.
If Russia and China are developing stealth aircraft, why should it be useless?
FA-50 is not really a stealth aircraft according to analysts, its just "low observable".
That said you have to seperate stealth from F-35. If a country does not like F-35, it does not mean they don't like stealth.

You guys COMPLETELY misunderstood what the CNO meant.

I dare say that none here have seen what a disappearing jet fighter look like on a radar scope, and it was an F-16, arguably among the top five most lethal, if not the most lethal, fighter in the air today, that pulled that disappearing act. Then when I mentally put myself in an enemy's cockpit, it was the most scary shit I have ever seen and felt. Put yourself in a soldier's combat boots slowly making your way across a field, knowing that in the woods yonder, there is at least one enemy sniper in there somewhere. It is that scary from a pilot's perspective.

Here is the unique thing about radar 'stealth' that gave people what I believe to be false hope, especially among those who wish nothing but the worst for the US...

When someone put a gun into an aircraft, the only solution was another gun in another aircraft.

When someone put a large engine into a fighter, the only solution was another fighter with at least an equally powerful engine.

When someone fielded a jet fighter, the only solution was another jet fighter.

When someone developed the air-air missile that if hit will all but guarantee a kill, the only solution was another fighter armed with air-air missile.

And so on...Am sure people get the big picture.

What make radar 'stealth' unique is that there is a possibility that another radar 'stealth' fighter is NOT needed. Instead, I just need to develop a better radar. This is what Admiral Greenert was talking about.

I have said this many times before here: In radar detection, nothing is invisible.

The radar sees all, but that is also the problem, that the radar really sees all. With every sweep, anything that is in the beam will be seen by the radar. The problem is the data extraction from the fact that the radar sees all. Radar 'stealth' make data extraction difficult, but not impossible, to pull the 'stealth' fighter from the EM shadows and that was Greenert's point.

Given how much it cost to develop a 'stealth' fighter, some people convinced themselves to the (false) hope that it is easier and cheaper to develop a more powerful radar. This is like despite being beaten by the ME-262, the US continued to develop more powerful piston engines running larger and larger propellers.

One day, someone other than US will develop a radar with enough sophisticated data processing to pull the F-22 out of the EM shadows, but by that time, we will have something better than the F-22 and you can bet your country's future on that. So to all those whose countries are struggling with what to do with the American 'stealth' fighters, laugh all you want, we are flying jet fighters while your countries are building bigger prop jobbers.

Some may call colored part as arrogance.

There are alerady two nations who have built stealth fighters and many will follow, while it is true that Pak FA and J 20 are much behind than their US counterparts, they are catching up.

Then there are other nations who have their own Stealth Fighter Program and are also investing in AD tech.

Then there are areas like ASAT Warfare where China and Russia could be considered on par with US.

Technology edge will not be enjoyed by a single nation forever.

Defense blogs are talking about a "6th generation" fighter aircraft. If it is not too much trouble for you then can you please explain simple folk like me what is 6th gen, how is it more efficient and the possible status of US 6th gen fighter.
P.S. - Can anybody explain the concept of "6th generation" in simple terms?

The generations things is close to being a marketing gimmick. It is solely American to begin with and it does not work for every fighter ever made to boot, by far and large.
According to this classification :
You get 1st Gen by mounting jet engines on a propeller fighter design.
You get 2nd Gen by adding a radar and possibly first gen ( 0_o ) IR missiles of the passive kind.
You get 3rd Gen by building an integrated design of the above elements ready for new capacities.
You get 4th Gen with Fly-by-wire and computer-based flight and or mission management equipment. ***
You get 5th Gen with Stealth.
You get 6th Gen by virtue of being a US maker of aircrafts designing post-5th Gen projects.

The above is a short dense version of mine but it explains why these categories are more or less useful.
In essence, the split is reasonable until 4th to 5th Gens transition. 5th Gen is somewhat valuable to one exception.
6th Gen is the US taxpayer being sold an excuse for the MIC to justify its poor performance to cost ratio.
You can argue that the very real advance of American planes was a decent reason for it until recently.

*** It is with 4th Gen that the rationale behind the concept was born and also where it breaks down, showing its uselessness.

Take an F-16. Add AESA and voilà, 4th Gen. Although strangely, the Falcon was supposedly 4th gen prior to it?
For that reason, the inclusion of AESA a posteriori to the 4th Gen is ludicrous. To make sense, 4th gen should have remained based on relaxed stability. With FBW and computers, aircrafts could be made with designs that would naturally NOT stay in a proper horizontal position as those system would then drive control surfaces to obtain it. By designing an unstable AC, you allow it to be much more maneuverable. Done without automation, this would have required the pilot to "fight" to maintain level flight!!!
Thus, FBW and computerization of commands are the real attributes of 4th Gen.
Adding AESA to it was pure BS that ruined the value of this tier classification. As proof, a Falcon with AESA is still
4th gen by other metrics and should be called 4Gen++ heck +++++++ if you like.
This shows in a few things like : AESA was not implemented on fighters first and not even on US fighters first.

With stealth as the 5th Gen attribute, things are, so to speak, back to logic except that it should be 6 and not 5
to cover the hybrids we just mentioned in a 5th gen apart from 4th. Which is by now too late to correct.
And as the 6th gen we know of only adds better US made new toys with the sole difference of _
Optionally piloted _ making sense as generation gap, the concept has come full circle into its own a..!

Forgetting generations would help a lot save for Lock-mart's marketing.
In a nutshell, that is the point of the USNavy too which is why this thread was started?

While China develop J-20 becos its stealth feature is far superior than F-35.
Useless comment! J-20 is the answer to F-22. If it was the equivalent to F-35, by virtue of the Lighting II being 3/4th the size of it, stealth cup would almost automatically go to USA which I surmise is not what you meant? ;)
Ferraris and RAM trucks, although both good, don't compare properly either BTW.

A lot of Americans will hate my post but F-35 is more a face saving exercise then anything of practical value. It has been a colossal waste of time and money.
Nah, the F-35 is a mistake due to the MIC not adapting to economic realities on the basis of the generosity of the US govt.
If the Pentagon had foreseen this, they'd have asked for something like the Rafale. France chose that route because it had limited financial resources already and foresaw the role that the price of tech would play in the future. Honestly, the Raffy is the most effective option today, based on the same concept of one plane doing all. The F-35 should catch up and possibly be in front but later. Why did the JSF miss so many marks hitherto?
As said & as per the saying, because the habit did not die easily of asking for everything with sprinkles.

What saves the USAF is the incredible Raptor. Picture the situation without it for fun?
The US Navy has the SH in latest Blocks which allows it to endure the delays, that's all.
And being poor ( by comparison ) saved France from making the same mistake, that's all!

F-22 was production was stopped way to early in my opinion. At least another 100 or so should have been made.
OH! Yes! Yes! Yes!
Then again, the F-22's line was cut for the exact same reason that plagues the JSF :
Ask for perfection regardless of cost or feasibility. The Raptor got the performances part right …
the tab was the problem.

The jury is still out on whether the Lighting II will even get the perfs part right?

None of this was a technical or scientific bug, just a vision one, IMHoO.
Good day gang, Tay.

P.S. Israel has a stealth producing system NOT at all based on the aircraft itself. This also relates to what Spectra is about. This would add to the 5th Gen debate but better be kept for a dedicated thread.

You are wrong.
LOL That's bit short, young man … as famously said Cyrano!
But I see your point, Gambit, as I made the same mistake. What I meant was :
The way the program is going is an error due to the MIC not adapting to economic realities on the basis of the generosity of the US govt.

The idea behind the F-35 is the same as that for Rafale ( apart for the AirDom Raptor Hi to Lo plus ).
The addition of stealth made it harder. The lofty ambitions of making it the best in all aspects
and from the onset made it impractical which was the biggest problem.
It is now coming through with increments which is fine and should have been the format to begin with.

I still think it will get there contrarily to some doomsayers with an agenda.
I just sincerely believe that the maker promised too much like the politicians do with the mindset
that money would fix everything, that attitude being the cause of time and money overruns.
As of now the GAO and USN seem to agree?

I hope this clarifies things and good day, Tay.

It looks similar to original MCA, India's fighter jet project conceived in 1990s to build on the LCA.

It look similar to original MCA, India's fighter jet project conceived in 1990s to build on the LCA.

I think you missed the topside air intakes and a couple more details, my young friend …
like the sunken exhausts, etc. Besides, by LCA timeline so far, the AMCA may come after it?

But it's OK, we get your enthusiasm.
Good day to you, Tay.

Hey I said it looked similar to the original iteration of what is now called the AMCA, with the angled cockpit, lack of stabilizers and all, not an exact replica.

I didn't imply that they copied original MCA design, just that it looked similar.Perhaps both designs were results of similar requirements.

This is how MCA, or AMCA as its called now, looks today- very similar to Japanese,Turkish and Korean 5th gen designs. It is possible that this is the most refined 5th gen design, learning from F 22, F 35, Pak Fa, J20 et al.

And AMCA better come on time, they can't give excuse of lack of and experience and infrastructure like they did with LCA.

I hope for your sake that you are right but don't bet your house on it just in case.
The engine called for by the DRDO in and of itself is out of what exists at present,
By Kaveri metrics, I wouldn't be surprised if it proved hard to deliver in time.

No disrespect mate, just being realistic.
Talk to you tomorrow, Tay.

probably due to the budget```i dont think F-35 is that 'useless' as this article suggests

And AMCA better come on time, they can't give excuse of lack of and experience and infrastructure like they did with LCA.
no, India doesnt have neither experience nor technological know-how to build a fighter```AMCA will be another drama just like LCA

One thing I can not understand why the unmanned aircraft is subsonic. I would have thought speed would be an important factor in the UCAV.
controlling a supersonic aircraft might be harder. i am guessing

@Gufi & @wiseone2
Sure X-47B is subsonic but so was the B-2 and F-117.
A better reason might be that sonic booms are not really stealthy? o_O

Just sayin' Tay.
