Bugti killed in operation: Six officers among 21 security personnel dead

QUETTA, Aug 26: Veteran Baloch nationalist leader and former Chief Minister of Balochistan, Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti was killed, along with 37 armed tribals, in a military operation in Chalgri area of Bhamboor hills of Dera Bugti district on Saturday.

Nawab Bugti, who was born in 1927, was a former chief minister of Balochistan. The chief of the Bugti tribe went underground last year, joining militants who have been waging an armed insurgency for a long time.

According to reports received here, around 21 security personnel, including some officers, were also killed in fierce clashes. Over two dozen tribesmen were injured in the area and taken into custody.

“Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti was killed in the operation along with some family members,” federal minister for information Mohammad

Ali Durrani confirmed to the media.

“Yes, I confirm the death of Nawab sahib in the operation,” Senator Agha Shahid Bugti, son-in-law of Nawab Bugti, confirmed to Dawn late Saturday night, adding that he had no information about other causalities.

However, sources said that Nawabzada Baramdagh Bugti, grandson of Nawab Bugti, was among the dead but Agha Shahid Bugti said he couldn’t confirm the report. A private TV channel said that Mir Balaach Khan Marri was also killed in the operation. However, the report could not be confirmed. Mr Durrani also said that Nawab Akbar Bugti had been killed along with two of his grandsons, adds Online.

According to the sources, security forces started the operation in Bhambhoor area three days ago using heavy weapons and helicopter gunships. On Saturday, the sources said, more troops were inducted into the operation and helicopter gunships shelled the area throughout the day.

The sources said that helicopter gunships targeted the Chalgri area of Bhambhoor mountains and dropped troops who took action in the area. Armed militants of Marri and Bugti tribes resisted the troops and heavy fighting was reported for several hours.

“Nawab Bugti and many others were killed when helicopter gunships dropped bombs at their hideout,” the sources said, adding that troops had arrested over two dozen injured militants.

Reports reaching here, said that the operation was continuing in the area till around 01.30am.

Security forces confirmed the killing of around 21 of their personnel and said that six officers — a colonel, two majors and three captains were among the dead.

After hearing about the death of Nawab Bugti, hundreds of students of the Balochistan University came out on the main Sariab Road here and started protesting against the killing of Nawab Bugti and other people.

They broke doors and windows of the university hostel and attacked passing vehicles. Police rushed to the area and fired in the air to disperse the protesting students.

According to security sources the government traced the whereabouts of the Bugti through a satellite tracking system, and launched the operation.

Leaders of major opposition parties, including Makhdoom Amin Faheem of the PPP and Hafiz Hussain Ahmed of the MMA, expressed shock and grief over the death of Nawab Bugti and reiterated their rejection of the use of force in Balochistan.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Altaf Hussain condemned the killing of Nawab Bugti and expressed condolences with the Bugti family. He said that his party had always opposed the military operation in Balochistan and called for talks to resolve the issue.

Reports of protest demonstrations were received from the dominantly Baloch are of Lyari in Karachi late last night.

A report received from Sukkur received late last night said that areas bordering the province of Balochistan in Sindh and Punjab had been placed on high alert with large deployments of security forces.

Our Correspondent adds from Multan: A spokesman of the Marri tribe, Najeed Marri, told Dawn on phone from Kohlu that 140 people from the Bugti and Marri tribes had been killed in the air and ground operations launched.

He identified the area of the operation as Karmowadh, 45km from Kahan, the headquarters of Khair Bux Marri tribe.

He said it was a major operation in which both sides suffered losses. He said that despite the death of Akbar Bugti, their struggle would continue.

It is learnt that some of the injured security personnel had been airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Multan.

I am really surprised at the intelligence with which this operation was carried out. Mush didnt go in and just do it!.

He planned it for long.

One by one the commanders of bugti were taken away, surrended their wapons

Old foes of bugti were brought back and re-setteled in the areas.

Some were broken away by promises of power-share and money etc.

After a long planning this thing happened.

Now lets wait for the reactions

the big fish are marris.

mengals and marris have been trained in russia and in the militaries of oman so pakistan fauj will face heavy problems.

they still managed to kill 25 ssg commandos by firing through a cave .

what went wrong?!

The reaction will be strong not on part of the common people buit those who sponsor these miscreants but lets hope this time the common balochs are wellaware so we can handle the situation.
At the moment the most disappointing thing is the reaction of Political parties all of them have started a campaign to cash the situation for own intrest.
Even ANP had started a drive yesterday.

And u know thats what Lahori claim true defenders of democracy.

Cheetah i feel sorry for the way you think. But its not your fault as its our leaders who have been miss leading us and they have made us to believe that Bugti was the crook and had to be eliminated
He openly said he wanted to separate Balochistan from Pakistan. It's not something we were told by Musharraf.

Thank you for the informative post br gen.

It is India that works against Pakistan and against stability, malicious india condemns the killing of a ruthless tribal leader.

Monday, August 28, 2006 (New Delhi):

In a remarkably strong statement, India has slammed Pakistan for the killing of iconic Baloch rebel Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti.

In the statement released by the foreign office, New Delhi has condemned the killing as a loss to the people of Balochistan.

Look this is the core issue. And thats where we Pakistani's lack behind Indians. They have given a statement and all of us would immediately start thinking that Bugti was working on Indian agenda. This would polarize the issue. We will be on one side against India and Balochis while Balochis would again have this feeling of neglect. It is time we make ourselves strong and dont give a heed to Indian statements. If we are strong internally we wont bother about externals blames.

We are not paying them enough? Is that what your trying to say? Why should we pay them? What have they done to get paid? What kind of rights do they want?

They have the rights! They want the money? They should earn it!

Talking about rights, Mushy is in Murree to inaugurate supply of gas, The same gas which is coming from Bugtis area.

Baghti is responsible for a failed assassination attempt on the life of our president, he's a terrorist!
Quite hilarious that killing of a terrorist is regarded as a great loss by our neighbors.
Btw, we don't need them to meddle in our domestic affairs. ;)

He said that Akbar Bugti was not a target of the operation and the government has no information about the killing of the grand sons of Akbar Bugti.

http://geo.tv/geonews/details.asp?id=128866

If Bugti was not the target and the bodies are still burried in the rubble, how can the officials confirm the Bugti has died. With in hours of this news Mr. Durrani himself said on tv that Mr. Akbar has been killed

AsSalam o Alaikum guys.
My personal reading of the situation is that the Army truely did not know who was in that cave. I suspect that there was an arsenal storage dump in the cave itself which ignited as a result of cross fire and the whole complex exploded. I suspect the injured people have been the source of the News. The Army then released a full story about how their Helis had been fired at and they responded to that. Atleast this is what I think.
I think this is going to be bad for the country. A 79 yr old man does not live long and Bugti would eventually have died. Killing him has made him a local Hero and will probably come back to haunt the Government. There are just reason for the Baluch uprising which could have been settled by negotiations, but this route of killing everybody and anybody who speaks aghainst the Government is not going to work. The Government needs to act quickly with radical investment and promise of jobs to the locals and alleviate some of their misereies. Also the void left by his demise should be filled by someone more sympathetic to the Government. This needs to be done quickly as the void occupied by someone with a grudge against the Government will give rise to more and prolonged trouble. Humility rather than chest banging will achieve much more.

Quetta has been the scence of violent sectarian violence as well, not sure whether it was his men who killed 55 shias in mosque in Quetta.
