16-year-old girl set on fire as 'punishment' by Abbottabad jirga

This incident did not take place in Abbottabad city. Its one of the surrounding villages where this happened.

This has nothing to do with Tribals or Tribal culture. Get your facts straight. Without knowing about the area and its people your comment seems like simply out of hate for Tribals.

These people are not Pashtuns. If you have any hate against Pashtuns at least try showing it in some appropriate place, don't blame them for something which they did not commit.

PTI won from there............................. "Sardar Mehtab Ahemd Khan Abbasi" lost in the last elections held there. Just see his name and try to understand why he adopted such a name, there is a reason for that and @Zibago is right biradri does play a role during elections and fights, it is now that recently youth has started questioning it because they thought Imran Khan was some leader who could bring change (by the way they should have realised by now that he is another idiot).

I thought you knew the area and its people, but seems like usual itching to blame whole of Pakistan and Islam took precedence over rational analysis? This incident is cruel, barbaric and criminal. These criminals should not be shown any mercy for their crime. But let's see if our justice system can punish them in next thirty years.

In this sad incident it appears that some village folks sat together and just decided okay lets avenge running away of girl from our family or village. It is a planned murder and hardly any jirga.

I have been part of jirgas in my area; people need to understand here it does play positive role in many instances, like in a closed community living together in a village the disputes get settled timely and justly (land disputes, family disputes, old enmity, robbery cases, divorce cases, biradri cases etc etc). Pakistan has a corrupt flawed justice and police system. Not everyone is like "Neer Bukhari" and his son who can slap policeman in public and then opposition leader would raise voice for him in parliament against his arrest warrants. So unless you have just and fair justice system (within approach of every common person) you cannot blame Jirga sittings.

in true islam a person, especially the lady, marries only by their free will and they don't need the consent of the mother, the uncle or some village "elder".

declare these criminals as munafiq and have them shot in public by a firing squad.

what south asia needs immediately is hardcore socialism... only this will civilize this region.
jamahir, i dont think socialism will help. instead, it will stifle free speech and right to dissent.
in an uneducated and primitive society as ours, corruption would easily creep in and there will be nothing to prevent that disaster from happening as any form of dissent will be discouraged by the power of gun.

I do know the area, and the people. While I agree with you that the incident is cruel and criminal, I disagree with you in that Jirgas are to be blamed for perpetuating the centuries old tribal mindset that prevails in Pakistan even today. The government's failure to provide justice only ensures that such incidences continue to happen all over with regularity, before all the world to see.

Tribal mindset prevails because state failed to reach people. You cannot blame people for their backwardness all the while when state never tried educating them and providing them with better carrier opportunities. People will stick to their values and rituals as long as they don't get to see a change.

By the way in my personal opinion century or centuries old people were lot better than current herd of humans.

The government's failure to provide justice only ensures that such incidences continue to happen all over with regularity, before all the world to see.

The world gets to see the bad side only, they see and watch what media sells and unfortunately media (at least in Pakistan) most of the time sells negative news only............... I haven't seen them showing coverage of Jirgas that decide most complex of the disputes justly and in manner that avoids bloodshed and killing. If we are to evaluate Jirgas then we need to look at good vs bad of jirgas ................ it cannot be just because few thugs decided something wrong the others are wrong too.

If the government cannot provide them justice at least it can nominate who should head the area jirgas and who should be members of that jirga. Or would it be too much to ask? because I don't think our judicial system is going to change for better anytime soon.

Your post is a perfect example of how and why and what the damage that such jirgas do in holding Pakistan in its medieval mindset.

Jirga of Pashtuns is not same as panchayat or any council, gathering in other areas of Pakistan. I dont think media or some body is hatching conspiracy in maligning the word "Jirga"......its simply one of the outcome of assimilation, we are influencing each other in Pakistan, they are picking up over vocabulary and and are loosely using it and we are picking up their vocabulary. Not just the vocabulary, we are affecting each other ways of life , customs, dress, food, mannerism etc......some are good influences, some are bad influences. @Spring Onion
