The upgraded D variant of China’s J-11 fighter jet, a copy of the Russian Sukhoi Su-27, has made its maiden flight, Chinese media reported. The jet reportedly has new radar and an air refueling system.

The J-11D model, which was tested in the air for the first time on Wednesday, incorporates technologies developed for the J-16 fighter jet.

It is reported to have better active phased array radar, use more composite materials in its wings and tail, and be capable of firing more advanced air-to-air missiles like PL-10 and PL-15.

Photos of the J-11D prototype tested at a Shenyang Aircraft Corporation airfield also showed an in-flight refueling probe installed on the port side similar to the arrangement used on J-15.

China was the first foreign country to buy Russian Su-27s in the early 1990s. Over a decade it purchased a manufacturing license for the jets and managed to copy the design to produce it from domestic parts.

Sorry guys, I need to apologize ! :(

NOOOO ... it is only a Photoshop-Fake based on the J-16-prototype '1612' !!!!

However I would not complain if the real J-11D would look like that. :woot:

This is the J-11D, looks like a AESA radar in the nose

As same as J-10B's nose, install domestic AESA radar in it.

The problem is simply that THIS very image is a PS-job - a better one than the one posted yesterday - but still a PS-job and not the real image. As such as long as we havn't seen the left side of the aircraft I won't take the IFR-probe for granted.

According to insider talk the jet features:
- AESA radar from 607th Institute, which has 1760 T/R modules and is the same one installed on the J-16
- More composite materials
- Upgraded 140 kN WS-10G engines
- Same EW, communications, and FBW systems aboard the J-16

In essence, it should approach the performance of the Su-35, kinematically, while possibly exceeding it in terms of electronics.
J-11 performing like SU-35 its hard to digest

A more detailed look at its second-generation AESA radar reveals the following:
- It was developed by the 607th Institute
....

Hmmm any information, where this is from ??? Huitong for example says the radar is developed by the 14th Institute and tested on a modified J-11B radar-testbed in 2014.

Besides that where is this rumour from that the J-11D uses a WS-10G ??? To admit this place here is the only one where this is taken for granted, all others at least discuss that or are sceptical. To admit the WS-10G is soi far only a rumour only mentioned in connection with the J-20's maiden flight but this has been falsified since some time.

J-11D is better than the Su-35.

The J-11D is better in terms of radar and avionics (AESA vs PESA).

The Su-35 is better in terms of engines (117S).

However, the Su-35 can't use Chinese weapons.

The Su-35 also can't datalink with the KJ-500.

Therefore, the Su-35 is no longer needed. Slight engine superiority is not worth the other disadvantages.

The J-11D is the ultimate stopgap until the J-20 enters service.

If war starts today, we can mass produce the J-11D.

Can Rafale field agaist J11D?

The Flanker nose is significantly larger than the Rafale nose.

Can Any Chinese Member could make a Specs comparison between Rafale and J11D:china:

Is this airplane intended for wide operational inducement or small batch for evaluating and testing some systems and technologies ?

If the J-11D indeed uses common radar systems with the J-16, then it uses an array from the 607th Institute, not 14th.

As for the WS-10G rumor, it's simply a rumor; whether it's true or not isn't up for either you or myself to judge.

Why? The two are different systems operating within different realms of military requirements.

A more appropriate comparison to the Rafale would be of the J-10B/C.

Thanks ... but regarding the radar it seems at least to me a completely different design (externally) to the radar used on the J-16 ....

OK, but didn't find any Rafale vs J10B/C side by side comparison on Google either.
