Glasgow City Council will fly the flag of Pakistan at half-mast from the City Chambers on Friday in a show of support following the Peshawar school massacre.

The attack by the Pakistani Taliban at the Army Public School on Tuesday killed 132 school children and nine staff and injured 125 others.

Two grand-nephews of Glasgow Southside Central SNP councillor Jahangir Hanif were among the dead.

The attack was to avenge Pakistan army-led operations against the Taliban.

Glasgow's Lord Provost, Councillor Sadie Docherty, said: "The events in Peshawar on Tuesday were truly shocking. The number of children involved in the shooting is particularly distressing.

Book of condolence
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy, particularly Glasgow's Pakistani community who make such a significant contribution to our city.

"We also keep in mind our council colleague, Councillor Jahangir Hanif, who suffered personal loss in Tuesday's events. Words cannot express the suffering that he and his family must be enduring and he has the support of the full council Family at this time."

Lord Provost Docherty and Council leader Gordon Matheson both attended the Pakistani Consul this week to offer their support to the Pakistani community.

Both also signed a book of condolence and Cllr Matheson addressed a vigil on Wednesday evening at the request of Pakistan's Consul General.

Lord Provost Docherty added: "The whole of Glasgow has come together to offer it sincere condolences to the people of Peshawar.

"The city has always enjoyed the warmest of relationships with the whole of Pakistan and we will continue to support them during this period.

"We hope that flying the flag at half-mast will serve as a symbol of our solidarity with the Pakistani people and government at this time."
