Pakistani, Afghan, Iranian. bharati, bengal dresses are lungi, Pajama, etc.

India is a very diverse Country. Different types of dresses are worn in different parts of India. Salwar kameez is worn mostly by North Indian women and North Indian men wear Pajama Kurta. Dhoti kurtas are also worn by Elders, mostly 50+, in Haryana. But trend is changing and even elders are switching to Pajama Kurta.

It is predominantly the dress for the Muslim people of subcontinent + Afghanistan. Hindu men wear lungi and their women wear saree but now they are getting civilised too. Though Muslim introduced the concept of blouse for saree as before the advent of Islam, it was only the cloth that was wrapped around the body ( the idols of their goddesses have no blouse on them whatsoever)

Shlawar kameez is dress of those who wear it and it actually comes in different shape and style . I would call it a south asian dress

But yes its national dress of Pakistan and most Pakistani wear it . I guess Shalwar/Kameez is common only in north India i.e Punjab/haryana . Most Indian guys wear patloon and middle age guys wear traditional lungi /dhoti :D

But today Indians are fast moving on to Shalwar Kameez. 50 years ago it was restricted to the Sikhs in Punjab - although even they used a tight pyjama instead of loose shalwar. Today Shalwar Kameez has spread everywhere in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The Sari is fast disapearing. I have no idea what brought this. Even more surprising when Indian's seem to be hostile to anything Pakistani.

And just to note Sikhs wore Kurta/Pajama and the Muslim Banglas used to wear Saris - look up even the images of 1971 war you can see that. Indira Gandhi as late as 1980s wore Saree all the time.

Yes, now they are moving towards shalwar Kameez and also western cloths like jeans, skirts and shirts/tops and that is because saree is uncomfortable for working women. Lungi is deemed uncivilised and too primitive so their men wear more indianised version of western cloths casually and for occasions they wear Kurta pajama (tight shalwar) (not the night dress / pyjama).

It can't be both. Unless both are the same exactly.
Shalwar kameez have different styles and i personally would not limit food, dress, music to certain region as you have different variety and styles in Shlawar kameez and certain ethnic groups reside in boht India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and they share language, food, dress with slight variation etc ..Punjabi shalwar kameez is also bit different to what Afghan or baloch wear..also pashtun/afghan women have different traditional dress

If we have to categorise it and pin point to a geography, then today definitely it is Pakistan where it is used/worn by most of the people and also we have improvised and added style over time. If you compare today's Kamez shalwar for men and women to that of pre-1947, you will find quite a lot of differences. And thus today it is Pakistani dress so I will vote for Pakistani dress

Patiala suits are most famous form of Salwar Kameez in North India. Women just love it. Every girl out here have at least 3 Jodi of patiala Suit. There are many Punjabi songs having patiala suits mentioned as beauty enhancing agent. (Well I don't know if the last line is grammatical correct or not).

Qamees (قمیص) is basically an Arabic word for the shirt/long shirt worn by both men and women though they have different style.
