Third regiment of T-72 tanks to be moved to Ladakh soon

On March 17, 2010 the PLA for the first time in its history deployed MBTs in the Tibet Military District, or TMD, these being ZTZ-96G MBTs, accompanied by Type 86G ICVs, which are with the 12th Armoured Division of the 21st Group Army (GA) under the Lanzhou MR. Overall, it is estimated that the PLA can mobilise (within three weeks), deploy and sustain up to three Division-sized formations for conducting a single-theatre campaign in Aksai Chin.

In my opinion the Indian MBT in region donot have back up armoured forces like PLA has which makes IA commander having to choose how to deploy them. Plus PLA has accompanying artillery and AAA mechanised forces.

My concern was about these IA T-72 reaching Leh or taking part in offensives against PA but looks like PLA has enough forces to keep these MBT in ladakh.

Thanks for your insightful post and the ORBAT.

I think this is part of an overall process to ramp up the presence in ladakh area with armour....more as a deterrence with availability to counter offensives by the opponent's forces.....rather than be purely an "offensive" thrust regiment.

Over the next 5 - 10 years we may see more backup and support in the area as India improves its logistics, border infra, mountain supply depots etc... Right now its just bravado for public consumption in saying this is an offensive grouping when I believe its main purpose is defense/deterrence + buying time for operations in other fronts should one be commited here by the opponent.

oh man, only T72? I guess Chinese army isn't equipped well enough to gain decent respect from Indian army.

the news said "looks to". they are now upgraded?

The ones that have been sent to this front have been I believe....there was an earlier upgrade as well.

These are not base T-72 tanks.....they pack a punch and should not be treated lightly.....especially given they have just as much capability to fire the latest munitions with newer generation fire control systems (even in the previous upgrade).

maybe you are right. regular T72's engine is too weak for highland deployment. but still, T72? why not T90?

Our chances of conflict with China are next to 0.

T-90s are best deployed where the conflict chance is a lot higher ;)...I will let you think where that might be :P

You can make ten regions out of it if you want. From PA perspective, all this region is taken as IO-Kashmir, not selected parts.which means Indian armour was in kashmir in 1965

You as all Pakistanis do are mixing up & assuming Kashmir as it exists now with the name of the state that acceded to India.

For the last time , tanks were employed by IA in 1948 in area like Zoji La in 1948. These were M5 Stuart Light Tanks of 7th Light Cavalry.

As regards the region of Jammu, a look at the terrain would indicate thats good tank country ( seasonal issues remain though).

Once again , what was the soldier & his ill informed CO laughing at when PA too employed Armour in the same region & in greater numbers ?

Was talking more about the ambient pressure. For example my friend notices a distinct difference when he is in a high altitude area with his performance pick up truck (he competes in various circuits around north american including places like colorado). With thinner air in even more high altitude areas, and the difference in densities (and thus cooling capacities of air compared to water)....I think water cooling vs air cooling would make a difference for diesel fuel hogs like tanks in very high altitude areas.....regardless of air temperature.

Though cooler air in winter would definitely help the cause for air cooled version, there would still be an advantage in water cooled at peak sustained maneuvering I believe.

Yes , rarefied air impinges on the efficiency of CI & SI Engines. However turbo chargers help to offset the shortfall .

“The Indian side is interested in placing an order for the modernization of T-72 in Ukraine, currently the parties are negotiating on the organization of cooperation. The estimated demand of the Indian customer in the modernized T-72, according to some estimates, is estimated at more than 1 thousand units,” – stated in the message.

According to the source, the main Indian requirements – conduct re-engine armored vehicles with engine replacement for a Ukrainian 6TD-2 power 1200 HP, and also equip tanks with air conditioning and Autonomous power plant.

Of course T90 will move in once it needed these are technically for first line of defense and offensive line

ALL armor divisions of india, and all its offensive divisions are deployed against Pakistan...

indian military psyche is is obsessed with hindus' history of getting conquered and defeated by Islamic invasions from Western regions (today's Pakistan) again and again and again..

Hence, all of india's military is heavily positioned against Western frontier to stop massive Islamic armies to sweept through hindu heartlands and destroy them once more.

Smart strategy. Good job.
