India not opposed to Pakistan's membership of Nuclear Suppliers Group: Swaraj

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj while addressing a press conference on Sunday said India will not protest Pakistan's entry to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

"We are not opposed to any country’s entrance into NSG based on merit, including Pakistan," Swaraj said, according to Indian media.

Swaraj also clarified that China is not opposed to India's membership of the NSG, amid reports of Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar's 'unannounced' visit to China last week to woo Beijing's support for entry to the NSG.

According to The Hindustan Times, Swaraj said China is only discussing the criteria procedure.

"I am hopeful we will be able to convince China as well [over India’s NSG membership bid], I am in contact with 23 nations; one or two raised concern but I think there is consensus," Swaraj said. "We are trying to ensure that India becomes a member of NSG by the end of this year."

India has decided, with the help of state governments and cabinet ministers, to reach out to almost all countries in the world by the end of 2016, Swaraj said.

Indian is not in position to oppose, because India did nuclear test way before Pakistan did it.

By toeing the line of China and Pakistan that the NSG membership should be on Criteria base instead of "Special Exemption" (which USA is contemplating to get over India on his side against China), India Successfully blocking US clever moves of Divide and conquer.

If Criteria base membership rules agreed upon in NSG, the only one which loose heavily forever will one and only the US of A.

You can fantasize about that. Some rules will be decided including trying known proliferaters and states that have harbored them running a nuclear bomb supermarket. These states and individuals will have to tried in a international court of law. If they are found to be innocent then a full consensus should allow them into the NSG.

Good Luck :enjoy:

What a great diplomatic move by india.

Means other members are now more bound to support India and pakistan in any way objected by most countries

I do not expect India to join NSG this time, but those opposing India will be hard time as well with respect to relationship/business with india.

Turkey opposing India means, now they create another strain relationship beyond Russia,Germany,Bangladesh,China...and counting.Certainly turkey is getting more and more isolating in world stage

Well all members of NSG knows reality , its only media consumption statement nothing more.

India's support to China for MTCR,support to pakistan bid for NSG can make China on board for india's membership.

Now Pakistan situation becomes difficult, pakistan can't reciprocate to favour India's bid, but in mean time not a member of MTCR to do favour for China.

What problems, didn't china vetod/slapped you twice in UN very recently

Very simple mathemtics... Yea India dont oppose NSG/Pak reason is very simple... India seriously not care whether Pakistan become a member or not... actually India looking for UNSC permanent seat which is not going to happen until India become part of all other related groups like IAEA, NSG, MCTR etc etc etc... so US and India is one on this page.. India want to become a Permanent member of UN and US fully support India... there is a new tactics... keep and cpam plau the game thats what Americans told Indians.. play the game smartly.. don't overjoy on everything.. keep less noise on everything we will make u to the permanent seat now India start passing such statements.. the biggest hurdle in all this for india is China...

Thank you, that make India,US and Japan more closer.India enhanced sensitive technology, business relationship.Indian economy is growing faster, militarily also growing more stronger, diplomatically getting more and more stronger with out even UN permanent membership in security council.

Yet another clownish one liner from a particular admin. The inferiority complex is real.:woot:

It's quite a clever move from the Indian establishment. Pakistan needs to play its cards well and push its case.

It was a safe bet. Pakistan is not exactly the most popular country when it comes to all things nuclear and your politicians who FYI suck at their jobs are not doing you any favours when they confuse an arty shell for a nuke.

What Pakistan can do , though unlikely, is make China stick to its guns and that is pretty much it. Getting the consensus of 40+ nations is beyond the scope of Pakistan's FO.
