Nergis Mavalvala MIT - Pakistani born astrophysicist one of key people who detected gravitational waves.

Nergis Mavalvala is a Pakistani-born astrophysicist , A Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is one of the key people who detected gravitational waves.

In 1916 – Albert Einstein predicts gravitational waves exist as a consequence of the theory of general relativity.
Gravitational waves give us another way to observe space. These waves could tell us a little more about how the universe formed. So detecting these waves would give us a new new insight into the cosmic events that produced them.

Finally, gravitational waves could also help physicists understand the fundamental laws of the universe. They are, in fact, a crucial part of Einstein's general theory of relativity

This Pakistani Born is Part of LIGO Team that Discovered Gravitational Waves!

By now you must be aware of the ground breaking discovery of gravitational waves made by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). The announcement, made yesterday, has been called one of the most significant scientific advances of the modern era. And a Pakistani born scientist is among the team that made this breakthrough discovery.

Dr. Nergis Mavalvala, a professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was born in Karachi and immigrated to the US as a teenager. After getting a B.A. in Physics and Astronomy from Wellesley College in 1990, she went on to receive her Ph.D. in Physics from MIT in 1997. A brief stint as a research scientist at Caltech was followed by her joining the Physics faculty at MIT in 2002.

Her work on gravitational waves was part of her research in graduate school at MIT, where she now is an associate department head of Physics. She credits her success to a host of mentors from the chemistry teacher in Pakistan who let her play with reagents in the lab after school to the head of the physics department at MIT, who supported her work when she joined the faculty in 2002.

Congrats to our Persian cousins. :yahoo:

Just to make it clear by Persian, I mean that she's an ethnic Persian being a descendant of the original inhabitants of Iran, and by cousin I mean that the Persians are cousins of the Pashtuns--which is why they traditionally have supported Pashtuns in wars.

Congrats on the lady's achievement, I hope indians don't derail the perfectly good thread about Pakistan born scientist

I think you missed this statement by her in the report above :

This statement of Nergis says it all :

She credits her success to a host of mentors from the chemistry teacher in Pakistan who let her play with reagents in the lab after school to the head of the physics department at MIT, who supported her work when she joined the faculty in 2002.

I dont think any indians were part of this ground breaking research ??

Congrats to the lady you have made all of us Proud. You Should come back and help your motherland as well. We all owe to this motherland (Pakistan) all should contribute our efforts to rank it among the best countries in the world.

Ok good ...there was an indian involved after spending soo much money on setting up a LIGO labratory down in India somewhere. But Pakistan played a role without any monetary investment.

I think Pakistan had a higher ROI :D ?

And I'll put in a word to nergis to visit some Indian university for a lecture on how to detect gravitational waves properly.

Wake me up when she "returns" to Pakistan then on account of some mentors.

Her field is very different from Xerox Khan anyway, no strategic importance for a country like Pakistan to fund and support her to the level she finds where she is.

Praise Einstein, but don't forget these guys: India’s involvement in landmark discovery of gravitational waves - Firstpost

You really dont want to open this up to comparing lol. Not when India is going to build its own LIGO facility.

But good work by this lady. Pakistanis can be quite capable in Science and Engineering as well....I have worked and studied alongside them and know firsthand.

More Pakistanis should join these fields.

I think Pakistan had a higher ROI

And what has the return actually been other than a feel good moment?

Its called a "spiritual gain" ..in vedic terms its called a step towards "Moksha" ..lol
