Attacking the 15-year Congress rule in Assam and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who represents the State in Rajya Sabha, over “lack of development”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched the BJP’s election campaign in Kokrajhar by announcing a slew of initiatives, including tribal status to two communities.

Addressing a rally at Bodofanagar in Kokrajhar, Mr. Modi said the BJP will ensure all-round development of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) areas, which have been “betrayed” by Congress.

“Why does Assam have so many problems when the same government is there for 15 years and the State has sent a Prime Minister for ten years....They could not do anything in 15 years and now they want me to solve all their problems within 15 months? Don’t you think it’s unfair to me,” Mr. Modi said.

“They are asking questions about my government. But what have you done in last 15 years in Assam and 10 years in the Centre when a person representing Assam was the Prime Minister,” he said, referring to Dr. Singh.

“They are just trying to confuse the people. You compare their 15-year rule and my 15-month-old government. You will see the vast difference,” he said.

Tribal status for Karbis, Bodos

Mr. Modi announced that the people of Karbi community living in the plains of Assam and Bodos living in hill areas would be granted tribal status and the process has already started.

“Development is the only solution to all problems of the area and I have opened both my heart and hand to ensure that the dreams and aspiration of the people of the area, which the State government has failed to fulfil, are realised,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister said he had instructed that youths from the northeast should be recruited in the Delhi Police and the process has already begun.

Announcing other initiatives, the Prime Minister said a central technical institute located in Kokrajhar would be given the status of a deemed university, the Sealdah-Guwahati Kanchenjunga Express will be extended up to the Barak Valley while the Rupsi Airport in Dhubri will be taken over by the Indian Air Force.

Good ! Hope this calms down many belonging to both the communities who have formed groups & are agitating either against the Govt. of Asom or against those not belonging to their tribe.

I think he means everything about N.E.- the good work happening, your culture, the development, people initiatives which are successful, agitations, ridiculous statements from netas etc.

This thread is a good idea if you ask me for the other Indians to know more about our North-East Indian brethren! I have always wished to learn more about NE-India. I definitely will be "Watching" this thread.

Thanks for opening this thread @Brahmaputra Mail

Government working for all round development of Northeast: PM Modi | india | Hindustan Times
“A conference of State Agriculture Ministers is being held in Gangtok. Am particularly delighted that the conference is being held in Sikkim,” Modi, who will also visit an exhibition of organic products and interact with organic farmers in Gangtok, said.

“I envision the Northeast to be a hub in this,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the Conference of Agriculture Ministers will focus on sustainable development, organic farming and ecotourism, “areas we are giving priority to”.

North East can become organic food capital of India: Modi | Business Standard News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the Northeast region has the potential to become supplier of organic fruits and vegetables. “There is such a huge demand for organic products nowadays. Northeast is the only region in the country which can grow organic products and can cater to this huge market. It will help the region grow economically,” said Modi here today.

Praising Sikkim which has turned completely organic, Modi said other states of the region, including Assam, should strive like Sikkim and become completely organic. “People nowadays are rejecting chemicals. Health has become a priority for everyone. Let Northeast take the lead in catering to this huge market,” said Modi.

Yesterday, Modi inaugurated Sikkim Organic Festival 2016 and said: “Today the whole world has recognised this effort of the farmers of Sikkim. He said the winds of this organic effort would now spread across the country.”

Taking a dig at Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government of Assam; Modi said it has of late become “fashionable” on the part of the state government to attack the Centre despite failing in giving account of its expenses. “Assam government has to give account of funds it has spent. Those were people’s money that you had spent and so you have to give account of all the expenses,” said Modi.

The Assam government had been complaining about tightening of flow of central funds since the Modi government came to power. The Centre in recent months had cut funds for many centrally-sponsored schemes in the state as many Assam government departments could not submit utilisation certificates for central funds for those schemes.

There were charges and allegations that the Assam government could not provide utilisation certificates for Rs. 11,000 crore central funds. The Assam government claimed that in spite of submission of utilisation certificates for Rs 5,236.98 crore worth of schemes in 2013-14 in respect to centrally-funded schemes like Indira Awas Yojna (IAY), MNREGA, midday meal, Sarba Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), flood management, only Rs 2,591.62 crore had been received so far against the total central fund allocation of Rs 7,161.57 crore against these programmes.

Earlier today, he addressed a rally jointly organised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in Kokrajhar in Assam’s Bodoland. This came close on the heels of BJP virtually inking a pre-poll alliance with BPF for ensuing Assam Assembly polls. However, against expectations, Modi did not announce any monetary package for Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), presently ruled by BPF. Expectations were earlier high that Modi would announce a Rs. 1,000 crore package for BTC.

BPF was a alliance partner in Tarun Gogoi led Congress government in Assam since 2003 but severed its ties in 2014. It has 12 members in Assam Assembly.

Well a classic question to ask any new govt or parties asking for vote

Barring guwahati which other place in Assam has stable power supply with almost minimal power cuts?

What's the idea for managing perennial flood situation?

What about the new rise in religious intolerances fuelled by appeasement policies of previous Congress government

What about a proper connectivity for NE region via Guwahati

The 4 way lane progress pan Assam and connectivity to outside states in NE

What about the deforestation happening widespread

What's the job opportunity for a normal youth?

What's the security for elder people in Assam?

What's the traffic police role when even normal car drivers beat them, slap them or give them rs 50 and case is settled?

What about the crony courts run by Surrendered militants..

Unfortunately no political party would answer all that and keep going round round..

I heard hemanta sarma was promised a 1000 cr package for Assam to be announced when Modi visits Assam. Thats what local news channel carried and now all r quiet again. So what's being done for reviving Assam?
