I was discussing this topic with a Punjabi Muslim from India. He said that Britain carved Pakistan and Bangladesh away from India to remove the chances of Muslims ever being able to control India. He said the Brits knew that in the future, India will rise and become powerful and they were scared that a large proportion of the population would be Muslims.

If you think about it, he is right. If Pakistan and Bangladesh joined India, India would have ~40% Muslims. There would be a lot of Muslims in the Government and there could even be a Muslim President.

What are your views on this?

and coming back to topic....If any1 is to be blamed...it is not british..it is ourselves..
They were successful because we indians, pakistanis, bangladesh were so willing to become pawns in their game....

but now there is so much animosity..that this topic cannot be discussed...

one thing i can say about this thread...is u will get a lot posts saying..

"No thanks....we r better off" :pop:..starting with me...

Abi,

I don't think it is possible. It is not just about RELIGION, it is also about ethnic ties, cultural ties etc.... Even if all India becomes Muslim, I don't think anyone in Pakistan will want to join India and Bangladesh... I will explain this in a second...

1. I am a Punjabi girl from Northern Punjab (Potohar area) living in USA. Where I work... lots of South Indians work there... and believe me (whether Hindu or Muslim), I dont feel any connection with them... culturally, ethnically, linguistically, they are very very different from us.. Same applies to Eastern parts of India (Manipur, Bengal, Assam etc)... Those people are so different from us, that I don't feel any connection with them. That is one of the main reasons Bangladesh got separated from Pakistan, because other then religion we share very little in common with them. The only people with whom I feel certain connection is North West Indians.

2. Another problem with Pakistan is that UNLIKE India and Bangladesh, it doesn't comprises entirely of INDIC people. You can blame this on British again... Afghanistan lost a big chunk of its territory and was made part of British India and later those lands became part of Pakistan in 1947... hence the problem between Afghanistan and Pakistan on Durand line Issue...

Millions of Pashtons, Balochis, Tajiks and other Iranic people of Pakistan (comprising 30-35% of Pakistani population) don't feel any connection with India... They have more affinity with Afghans and Iranians as compared to Indians...

3. I will ask the same question to you.. Do you think that All Iranic people (Kurds, Persians, Balochis, Pashtuns, Lurs, Tajiks etc) should unite together and create GREATER IRAN (see the map below)? I don't think it is possible atleast for now... with all the difference between Iranians, Afghans and Tajiks...

Yes but President don't have much power in Indian constitution... Anyone can be President ... whether an astronaut, singer, dancer etc etc

It will be a big day for India when India will have its first Muslim PRIME MINISTER...

The majority of Pakistanis are Indic peoples. For example, there are Punjabis in both nations and the only differences between them is religion. Of course there are differences between you, but they cannot be that big.

They are still a minority, and they are in the same country as Indic people already, so surely it wouldn't make a difference? Besides, there seems to be problems between the Iranic and Indic peoples already. If worse comes to worst then would it be such a huge problem if some parts of Pakistan gain independence whilst Pakistan joins a larger country (India) and the Pakistani Government becomes integrated with the Indian Government?

This is a different situation. Unfortunately, Iran lost these lands centuries ago. The Pakistan and India situation happened 63 years ago. The unification of "Greater Iran" would mean taking land from a lot of countries including Pakistan, but the unification of Pakistan, Bangladesh and India wouldn't take any land away from other countries.

To answer the question, i would support it if it happened naturally (I.e. without war or conflict) and if no one was forced into it, but it doesn't seem likely. Although the differences between us is narrowing. The break up of the soviet union and the removal of the Taliban and Saddam have helped a lot and today we enjoy closer relations, for example, a Persian T.V channel is being built by Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan and will go on air soon.

That is true that majority of Pakistanis are Indic people.. As I said before... as a Punjabi I dont mind uniting with North Western Indians (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Kashmir etc)... But I don't feel any connection with South or East Indians... their food, their dress, their languages etc are completely alien to me.

Iranic people of Pakistan are a minority... but considering their absolute numbers and Pakistani population they are very strong minority...

There are 1 million farsiwans (many are Afghan Tajiks, but some are native to Pakistan like Wakhi Tajiks), 28 million Pashtun (that doesn't include millions of Afghan Pashtun refugees ), 6.2 million Balochis.

That is atleast 35 million people.. thats is MORE than the population of Afghanistan and Half the population of Iran....

And then include the people from Northern Areas of Pakistan like Gilgit-Baltistan agency (again they are not indic people, their languages are classified as Dardic and are related to Central Asian people). IF you ever visit all these areas... you will see how different they are from the rest of Pakistanis. There is already some tension between Indic and Iranic people of Pakistan... Iranic people like Pashtuns and Balochis thinking that other Pakistanis are oppressing them... If Pakistan ends up uniting with India.. then Pakistan is doomed for failure.. and those people will rebel and ask for separate country...

Try telling that to Afghan :D:lol: or visit Afghan forums... They think that Half of Pakistan belongs to them.. and Pakistan should return those lands back to Afghanistan... Hence the tension between Afghan and Pak...

Nothing wrong with constructive arguments..

I didnt know pakistan had native persians(tajiks) where do they live in pakistan?

Not everybody think this way, only some specific people.

I know that there are differences, but there are also differences between the current people of Pakistan. Your post below explains it in detail:

Iranic people of Pakistan are a minority... but considering their absolute numbers and Pakistani population they are very strong minority...

You see, if you manage to live in the same country with all of the differences, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to live with Indians, right?

If the Indic people unite then would there be anything wrong with the Afghan people uniting? I mean, just because there are Afghan people (By Afghan people i mean Pashtuns and Baluch, although i am not sure if Baluch can be considered Afghans as well as Iranic) in Pakistan, does not mean the Indic people shouldn't unite, does it?

Not really. Check the credentials of all the presidents of India till date and you will know.. However you are right that the actual power is concentrated in the cabinet and the PM (Like it should be in a democracy)

It will be a big day for India when India will have its first Muslim PRIME MINISTER...

The only one on the horizon is Omar Abdullah and I will be glad if he makes it..

I just don't like seeing weak and small countries. The Brits wanted to weaken other countries and so they split up Iranic, Indic and Arabic people.
