Today that land of Kashmir, under the heels of the enemy, has become weak, helpless and poor
Once known among the wise as Little Iran.

A cry of burning lament issues forth from the heavens,
when the man of truth is overawed by the power and pomp of king and landlord.

The old farmer’s cottage, on the mountainside, where pain and grief ever rule—
tells its sad story of Fate’s hard lot.

So skilful of hands, so rich in mind, these people, alas, or pure breed,
O God, your justice, so long delayed, must come at last as a retribution

Iqbal

How many Maharajas weren't cruel, vain, philandering and self-centred? Just a handful from among 600 odd.
Iqbal's family came from Kashmir.

So he obviously had more link with that region as compared to some far off place in Bengal.

Didn't he die in 1938? What is he lamenting about here?

About hindu dogra occupation of Muslim areas of Kashmir and the miserable lives of kashmiri muslims under that tyrant dogra hindu regime of 1846-1947 period.

He was rightly saying that Kashmir was once known as "Iran e Sagheer" (smaller Iran) throughout the muslim world due to excellence in persian carpet making, Saffron cultivation, Shawl (Cashmere/Pashmina) making and producing rich persian literature in muslim times of kashmir, and a general resemblance between the landscape and climate of mountain valleys of Kashmir and Iran.

A country whose people accuse each other of being agents of various "species"..... deserve to have their land occupied..... A kick in our as* is what we require and it's what we're getting...... weak.....!

Ah, nothing regarding Iqbal's poem. Was a more generic statement on the state of affairs during the Raj.

All India Kashmir Committee was set up by prominent Muslim leaders of India on July 25, 1931.

Mirza Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood Ahmad formed this committee and invited Muhammad Iqbal, an eminent Kashmiri and a number of other leaders.

Although orthodox press and historians attribute the formation of the Committee to Dr. Muhammad Iqbal.

Here is a bit more from the wiki about how a Dogra Maharaja Gulab Singh (not a sikh but a Hindu) instituted some of the harshest rules in the state.
