Here's an interesting topic that has potential to change and alter strategic goals of all those in the Subcontinent.

Background
Gwadar Port is located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, just outside the Strait of Hormuz, near the key shipping routes in and out of the Persian Gulf. A large part of Gwadar's construction and development, including the airport, are being partly (or completely) funded by Chinese firms who see the potential and strength in Pakistan's Gwadar port.

Strategic Influence

China has a great strategic interest in Gwadar. The following are important ones:

  • China is heavily dependent upon the oil from the Persian Gulf; at present this oil passes via a very long route through the Strait of Malacca, which is under US influence. After this oil has reached Shanghai or the Chinese East Coast, it has to be transported thousands of miles inland to the West of China. By using Gwadar port and then the Karakoram Highway (KKH), the oil follows a much safer, cheaper and shorter route to the West of China.
  • The Middle East is a very important region in the world because of its Oil Reserves and large markets. China has a natural dependence on this but does not have the means to influence it. The Government of Pakistan has already committed to providing a Naval Base to China in Gwadar. This will not only help secure Gwadar but also take the Pakistan China Friendship to new heights.
  • Chinese goods will find an easier, shorter and secure route to the Middle East, increasing profitability and increasing trade.
  • China will greatly benefit from the industrial zone by setting up industries close to the markets.

Military Application

In order to retain this strategic influence and control, Chinese analysts have suggested that after the construction completion of this project, the PLAAF and/or PLAN be stationed at Gwadar to secure China's multi-billion dollar project. This allows China to exercise control over a region which is of vital importance to it's stability.

China won't seek a permanent base. They will help Pakistan Navy build deterrence and have permanent rotation rights from the New Naval station at Gwadar. By doing this they will avoid getting directly involved in a potential rift. The main goal is to secure the base and the port which PN can do effectively. This would also not anger the land of the free more than we can afford to.

Those are definitions... But I think it would be part of the plan of the billions and billions invested in Pakistan. No one will do that without military guarantee...

china should be given rights to use the port and airport but under the control of the PK govt.

the investments we are talking here are very long term plans, whether they materialize depends on the future geo-strategic dispensation of the area.

In my opinion they should not be allowed, instead Pakistan should make their own Military bases through out the province. I think in Balochistan province there should be at least 2 big core command, consisting of PAF & Navy because Balochistan province is back bone of Pakistan.

This based on the fact that you expect others to give you hundreds of billions? You are bankrupt a long time ago without the help of a few nations. You want to base troops on your own soil? What did you achieve when they came hunting for Al Qaida in Abottobad? You did nothing and you never will be able to do anything since you are on a payroll.

USA and Europe has bases all over the world. They will do anything to stop China becoming more developed. They did anything to get oil fields in their hand. You certainly still thinks it is all about giving democracy to the people and throwing away the dictators? Sure. The world is all about resources and this is nothing else then secure oil routes.

What I have written is the right thing to do for PA, you just sit in Germany & smoke Van Nelle. I have seen people & I know you people well. When ever Pakistan tries to move forward people like you just lose it. It is true Pakistan is filled with corrupt politicians & because of them Pakistan is facing a real tough time, but there are still few good people in Pakistan & because of them Pakistan is still alive & INSHAALLAH Pakistan will come out of this mess. You just sit there tight.

As far as US & Europe goes, I can only see rise in their debts.

With all due respect, don't worry about where @Munir is sitting whether its Germany or Mars. What he has stated is the simple truth. Once a super power like China funds projects abroad with billions of dollars, it wants a guarantee that the objective of those missions are consistently satisfied. If it has to secure those interests militarily, then so be it.

Pakistani's need to put their ego aside and learn that we need help to accomplish the goals that we want in the long run. The benefits for Pakistan are many. I also imagine that the Indians wouldn't sit too easy if China did decide to formulate a base in Gwadar.

Poora mulk aik sath kiraay per de do tukry tukry mat do. Sharam to nhi aati kabhi US kabhi arabs to kabhi china ko aady de ker $kamay jaty hai poora mulk ka aikpackage ker do ...........

Giving PLAAF/PLAN the area is much different than giving Jacobabad or PNS Mehran to NATO forces. NATO uses those bases strictly as a link to the war front in Afghanistan.. it acts as a supply route for military purposes. Alternatively, in Gwadar, Chinese interests are mainly economic and social. They are completely different and mustn't be confused.
