The German weekly Bild am Sonntag said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia wanted to purchase five German Type 209 submarines for 12 billion euros ($16.5 billion). The paper said that in the long term, the kingdom was interested in buying altogether 25 of the vessels.

The newspaper said it had information that the German chancellery had in the summer already signaled a willingness to examine such requests from Saudi Arabia "favorably" as soon as a new government was in place.

The submarines would be constructed by the Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) and the Nordseewerke Emden, both shipbuilding companies located in the north of Germany, according to the report.

Again when this news ?

My problems with this information:

1.Why 209 and not the latest 214 ?
2.12 billion euros for 5 ?!? That's 2.4 billion/1 submarine.A french Barracuda class 4800t nuclear attack submarine costs 1.6 billion euros.

the persian gulf is too shallow for a submarine to operate from.

Where else is Saudi Arabia planning to project naval power ?

Increasingly I feel Saudi Arabia is buying stuff, not because it needs it, rather the seller needs to sell it.

No moron ! :D

Because there will be a transfer of technology. A great part submarines will be manufactured in Saudi Arabia.

The final choice has not been arrested between France and Germany. It depends before any other consideration ‘the rate of technological transfer’. :azn:

you idiot , i dont think its written in post

I don't think that KSA needs submarines.
Instead they should invest more in surface combatants.

Well, I don't think the pricing of the contract is accurate AT ALL but here are few things I would like to mention.

No, Firstly, the contract will include developing a full infrastructure within KSA to maintain the subs locally, which will enable them to overhaul it whenever needed.

Second, the Saudis are only interested in transfer of technology agreements in which German is obligated to pass the basic blueprints needed to be utilized by the Saudis.

Thirdly, the contract will also include all type of weapon systems needed to be equipped in the submarines.

Fourthly, the Saudis will have to pay for all basic training needed to operate the subs.

But they aren't the only rich country! Germany itself is one of the richest nations on the planet.

Let just keep the subjectivity of the conversation on the track with no trolls, please?

But not in the Red Sea.

Where else is Saudi Arabia planning to project naval power ?

Phase one is to enhance the Naval Air Wing with combat Helicopters.

Phase two is the development, and the acquisition of destroyers - such as Type 45 -

Phase three - even though it still not clear yet - Operating a modest fleet of submarines.

I disagree with you on that given it to the current climate in the region, but I still respect your opinion though.

Can't you be mature for one day

Saudi buy Nukes from Old Soviet Union States now independent countries so no body ever mess with Saudi Arabia like Pakistan

$16.5 billion for 5 Subs thats $3.3 billion per Sub, if my calculations are correct ! :o:

How much could the Transfer of Technology (ToT) be worth for a conventional submarine for its acquisition be worth $3.3 billion ! o_O
