Antony to induct LCA into Air Force on Dec 20

NEW DELHI: After a delay of over two decades and several cost overruns, indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will be inducted in the IAF later this month in Bangalore.

The under development aircraft achieved another significant milestone today with the launching of an infrared seeking air-to-air missile that hit the target with precision and destroyed the target, a DRDO statement said.

The Initial Operational Clearance-II of the aircraft will be done on December 20 at its home-base in Bangalore after which it will be inducted into the IAF by Defence Minister AK Antony, Defence officials said here.

The aircraft will be the LCA Mark 1 and 40 of them will be inducted by the IAF and the DRDO and HAL will continue to make improvements in it and that more powerful and capable version would be inducted later in the force, they said.

The IAF, if everything moves ahead as per the present plans, will have a total of seven squadrons of such aircraft which comes to about 140 aircraft.

The aircraft project was sanctioned in 1983 at a cost of Rs 560 crore, the project will be completed exactly 30 years after it was launched at an approximate overall cost of around Rs 25,000 crore.

Even after its induction into the IAF, the aircraft will undergo several tests in the force and will have to attain the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) for getting ready for full operational deployment.

Meanwhile, the missile firing test demonstrated the required parameters and was conducted off the coast of Goa in Arabian Sea, DRDO said.

DRDO chief Avinash Chander congratulated the missile testing team, saying that with "this launch of missile from Tejas and successfully hitting the target in the first shot, we have demonstrated the total weapon system capability of LCA Tejas."

The LCA has been undergoing weapon release flight tests, for its operational clearance and eliminated an aerial target towed by the pilotless target aircraft Lakshya using its infrared seeker air-to-air missile.

Fake ceremony ,this aircraft will not be fully operational till 2015.
Well It was to be inducted just after IOC-2. And if Antony is saying that it'll be inducted by dec20 means it's definite to pass IOC-2 by then.

Seems it has passed/definite to pass IOC-2 before Induction date. Anyway they are just inducting it sir and It won't be battle ready till FOC(next year end). But again they can keep doing other tests while its inducted to get FOC.

What was the last deadline for Tejas to achieve IOC-2 in such case ? To me , it still appears that some of the criterion have been relaxed to pave way for its early induction , because of the pressure on HAL due to its constant delays and failure to meet the deadlines . Sure , there's no stopping it from induction but trust me , it will be ceremonial and a formality fulfilled with the operational status not coming until long , though the same tests were/are being performed even when its not inducted into AF .

That is not the point. The point is it will enter production.

This is exactly what jealous people say. Induction on dec 20 is synonymous to IOC-2 and the aircraft will be cleared for production post this ceremony.

Actually deadline was 25th December. Though no one can ruleout some relaxation in order to get IOC-2 but definitely not major ones because to get IOC-2, It had to get green signal from both Airforce Chief and Defence ministry along with HAL itself and I don't think that our Airchief would have favour IOC-2 without certain level of satisfaction.

No need to postmortem it.LCA is inducted means it get IOC-2

I didn't like the part I quoted in Green. It means they are not fully done. Atleast they must use better English. If it were me, I'd say, "We are working on the induction of more powerful version, any additional changes need by the IAF will also be taken up by DRDO/HAL"

The Blue part scares the not so perfect engineer in me. My code never works the first time. ;)

But a great great news for the loooooooong delayed program and for India!

Everyone knows its not fully done. You know even the JF17 is not fully not done although it was inducted 6 years ago. I will repeat again, the significance of this ceremony is that Tejas is cleared for production now and now HAL will start manufacturing SP1 (Actually they have already started.)

HAL will Induct all 40 aircrafts in around 2-3 years. Production rate will be 16-20 aircrafts/year initially for mk1 while it will go up with Tejas mk2.

I would like to see them firing medium/ling range AA missiles now.

A great boost of confidence for the industry. We have to build upon this basics to move to the next level.

Way to go....
But What will be the production rate? don't we require it in large numbers for rapid replacement ?
